    The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the addition of poultry litter on growth, biomass yield, flavonoid and phenol content, and antioxidant activity in leaves of pink pepper. The experiment was carried out at the Federal University of Grande Dourados, in Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul state, from October 2009 to May 2010. Pink pepper was grown in single or double row in soil with incorporated poultry litter at doses of 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 t ha-1. Treatments were arranged as 2 x 5 factorial in a randomized block design with four replications. There was a significant interaction between the doses of poultry litter and evaluation times for plant height and chlorophyll content. A linear increase in leaf area, fresh and dry weight of leaves and diameter of main stems with increasing doses of poultry litter was observed. Plants grown in single row showed higher fresh weight of stem with increasing doses of poultry litter. Poultry litter at 15 and 20 t ha-1 promoted an increase in flavonoid and phenolic contents in the leaves. No significant effect on the antioxidant activity was observed by the chemical method using DPPH. Therefore, it is recommended the cultivation of pink pepper plants with double row and 20 t ha-1 of poultry litter to higher growth, biomass yield, and flavonoid and phenol content. © 2016, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria.     O trabalho teve como objetivos avaliar a morfometria dos frutos e sementes de carobinha (Jacaranda decurrens subsp. symmetrifoliolata) e o efeito de temperaturas na germinação de sementes armazenadas em ambiente sem controle de temperatura e umidade relativa. O estudo foi realizado no Laboratório de Sementes da UFGD, Dourados, MS. Em amostra de 120 frutos e de 550 sementes foi determinado: o comprimento, a largura, a espessura, o número de sementes por fruto, e a massa dos frutos. A germinação foi estudada após três períodos de armazenamento das sementes (120, 480 e 720 dias) a temperatura ambiente e sob quatro temperaturas de germinação: três constantes (18, 25 e 30ºC) com luz contínua e sob condição de tempera alternada, 20-30ºC, com fotoperíodo de 12 horas. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente ao acaso, em arranjo fatorial 3 x 4, com quatro repetições. As variações nas medidas de frutos e sementes representam indício da alta variabilidade genética populacional. As sementes armazenadas por 120 dias e submetidas à germinação na temperatura de 25ºC resultaram em 69,4% de germinação e índice de velocidade de germinação - IVG, de 0,983. Sob temperaturas de germinação de 30ºC, constante, e de 20-30ºC, alternada, obtiveram-se 63,9% e 63,8% de germinação e 0,486 e 0,413 de IVG, respectivamente. Sob temperatura de 18ºC a germinação foi lenta e menor, 27,7% e IVG de 0,119. As sementes armazenadas por 480 e 720 dias não germinaram. Com base no comportamento fisiológico das sementes é possível classificar Jacaranda decurrens subsp. symmetrifoliolata como espécie intermediária (entre ortodoxa e recaucitrante).<br>This study aimed to evaluate the morphometry of fruits and seeds of Jacaranda decurrens subsp. symmetrifoliolata ("carobinha") and the effect of temperature on the germination of seeds that were stored in environment without controlled temperature and relative humidity. The study was carried out at Seed Laboratory of Federal University of Grande Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. For a sample of 120 fruits and 550 seeds, the following variables were determined: length, width and thickness, besides the number of seeds per fruit and fruit biomass. Germination was studied after three seed storage periods (120, 480 and 720 days) at environment temperature and four germination temperatures: three constant temperatures (18, 25 and 30ºC) with continuous light, and one alternating temperature, 20-30ºC, with 12-hour photoperiod. Experimental design was completely randomized, in 3 x 4 factorial schemes, with four replicates. The variations in the measures of fruits and seeds evidence a high genetic variability in the population. The seeds stored for 120 days and subjected to germination test at 25ºC resulted in 69.4% germination and germination velocity index - GVI of 0.983. At 30ºC, constant temperature, and 20-30ºC, alternating temperature, germination was 63.9% and 63.8% while GVI was 0.486 and 0.413, respectively. At 18ºC, germination was slow and lower, 27.7%, and GVI was 0.119. Seeds stored for 480 and 720 days did not germinate. Based on the physiological behavior of seeds, it is possible to classify Jacaranda decurrens subsp. symmetrifoliolata as an intermediate species (between orthodox and recalcitrant)

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the production and chemical composition of the essential oil of Brazilian pepper fruits grown in single and double rows using different doses of semi decomposed poultry litter in two evaluation times. The experiment was carried out at the Federal University of Grande Dourados, in the city of Dourados, state o- Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, from October 2009 to November 2010. Brazilian pepper plants were grown in single and double rows in soil with incorporated poultry litter at the doses of 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 t ha-1. Treatments were arranged as a 2 x 5 factorial experiment in a randomized block design with four replications. Fruits were harvested 180 and 390 days after transplant (DAT). There was a significant interaction for fresh weight of fruits and weight of 50 fruits, being the values higher at 180 DAT in the double rows with increasing poultry litter doses. Fruits harvested 390 DAT showed higher diameter compared with those harvested 180 DAT. The number of fruits per bunch was significantly influenced by the doses of poultry litter, presenting a linear increase with increasing doses. The essential oil of the Brazilian pepper fruits obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by Gas chromatography - mass spectrometry exhibited predominance of monoterpenes, highlighting &#945;-pinene (20.14%) as the major constituent. The chemical composition of the essential oil was not influenced by the number of plant rows in the plot or by the doses of poultry litter in any evaluation time. Therefore, the cultivation of Brazilian pepper plants is recommended in double rows, with 13.59 t ha-1 of incorporated poultry litter in the soi, and with harvest of 180 DAT for higher fruit production

    Produção de moranga e pepino em solo com incorporação de cama aviária e casca de pinus Production of squash and cucumber in soil amended with poultry manure and pine bark

    A cama aviária e a casca de pinus (Pinus taeda) são subprodutos de empresas avícolas e florestais que podem ser utilizados na melhoria da fertilidade e das propriedades físicas e químicas do solo. As morangas 'Tetsukabuto' (Cucurbita maxima x C. moschata) e 'Exposição' (Cucurbita maxima) e o pepino 'Caipira' (Cucumis sativus) estão entre as cucurbitáceas mais cultivadas em Santa Catarina. Avaliou-se os efeitos de doses (0 a 50 g.kg-1 de solo) de cama aviária (2,82% N; 2,53% P; 1,2% K; 2,5% Ca; 0,5% Mg) e da casca de pinus (0,30% N; 0,10% P; 0,12% K; 0,21% Ca; 0,03% Mg), incorporadas ao solo, no desenvolvimento de plantas e na produção de moranga e pepino. Os experimentos foram delineados em blocos ao acaso, desenvolvidos em casa de vegetação e no campo, e, dependendo do experimento, possuíam tratamentos variando de quatro a cinco, e, repetições de quatro a oito. Em casa de vegetação, doses de cama aviária de até 30 g kg-1 de solo (correspondendo a ~3 kg m-2) aumentaram as plantas emergentes (~15% a 50%) e a massa da matéria fresca (~90% a 200%) de plantas de moranga 'Exposição' e de pepino 'Caipira'. O pH e os conteúdos de Ca, K, Mg, Mn, N, P e Zn do solo aumentaram com o incremento das doses de cama aviária. O incremento nas doses de casca de pinus diminuiu (~27%) os níveis de nitrogênio mineral do solo. Nos experimentos de campo, a incorporação de cama aviária e casca de pinus aumentou a emergência (~15%) de plântulas de pepino. A produção de frutos de moranga 'Tetsukabuto' e de pepino 'Caipira' aumentou (~120%) nos tratamentos com cama aviária, na dose de 30 g kg-1 (correspondendo a ~ 3 kg m-2).<br>Poultry manure and pine bark (Pinus taeda) are by-products readily available in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil. These by-products can be used as soil amendments to improve soil fertility and soil physical and chemical properties. Inter-specific hybrid squash cv. 'Tetsukabuto' (Cucurbita maxima x C. moschata), squash cv. 'Exposição' (Cucurbita maxima), and cucumber cv 'Caipira' (Cucumis sativus) are three of the most cultivated cucurbits in Santa Catarina. The effect of rates (0 to 50 g.kg-1 of soil) of poultry manure (2.82% N; 2.53% P; 1.2% K; 2.5% Ca; 0.5% Mg) and pine bark (0.30% N; 0.10% P; 0.12% K; 0.21% Ca; 0.03% Mg) incorporated into the soil, was evaluated on plant growth and yield of squash and cucumber. The greenhouse and field tests were conducted in a completely randomized block design with four or five treatments and four to eight replications. In greenhouse, poultry manure at doses of 30 g kg-1 of soil (corresponding to ~3 kg.m-2) increased the number (~15-50%) and the fresh mass (~90-200%) of emerging plants of squash cv. 'Exposição' and cucumber cv. 'Caipira'. Soil pH and soil concentration of Ca, K, Mg, Mn, N, P, and Zn increased with increasing poultry manure doses. The increase of pine bark dose applied to the soil reduced (~27%) the levels of mineral nitrogen. In field trials, poultry manure and pine bark increased the emergence (~15%) of cucumber seedlings. The fruit yield of squash cv. 'Tetsukabuto' and cucumber cv. 'Caipira' increased (~120%) with the incorporation of poultry manure to the soil at the doses of 30 g kg-1 (corresponding to ~3 kg m-2)
