Is It Attachment Style or Socio-Demography: Singlehood in a Representative Sample
Since the percentage of single adults is steadily increasing, the reasons for this
development have become a matter of growing interest. Hereby, an individual’s
attachment style may have a connection to the partnership status. In the following
analysis, attachment style, gender, age, education, and income were compared in regard
to the partnership status. Furthermore, an analysis of variance was computed to compare
the attachment style within different groups. In 2012, a sample of 1,676 representative
participants was used. The participants were aged 18 to 60 (M = 41.0, SD = 12.3);
54% of the sample were female, and 40% were single. Attachment-related attitudes
were assessed with the German version of the adult attachment scale (AAS). Single
adult males did not show a more anxious attachment style than single adult females
or females in relationships. Younger, i.e., 18 to 30 years old, paired individuals showed
greater attachment anxiety than single individuals, whereby single individuals between
the ages of 31 to 45 showed greater attachment anxiety than individuals in relationships.
In addition, single individuals more frequently had obtained their high school diploma in
contrast to individuals in relationships. Concerning attachment style, the individuals who
had not completed their high school diploma showed less faith in others independent
of singlehood or being in a relationship. Concerning age, older single individuals, i.e.,
46 to 60 years, felt less comfortable in respect to closeness and showed less faith in
others compared to paired individuals. Logistic regression showed that individuals were
not single if they did not mind depending on others, showed high attachment anxiety,
were older, and had lower education. An income below € 2000/month was linked to a
nearly 13-fold increase of likelihood of being single. In sum, the attachment style had
a differential age-dependent association to singlehood versus being in a relationship.
Education played also a role, exclusively concerning faith in others
(Autorenreferat)'This report gives an overview about certain aspects of modern reproductive medicine. The following issues are prioritised: development of medical facilities, people's knowledge on reproductive medicine, appraisal of chances and risks, psychological aspects of involuntary childlessness, stresses and strains during IVF-treatment, ethical consequences of these medical procedures. Furthermore interactions between demographic and medical developments are analysed as well as resulting psychological and sociological perspectives. Previous research results present both a lack of knowledge towards reproductive medical treatments and disproportionate expectations and hope toward treatment-outcome. Very often expensive and complex methods are practiced to fulfil the child wish, but mental and social aspects remain unconsidered. So the motto 'a child at any cost' on the part of many involuntary childless couples as well as of some fertility doctors poses a glaring contradiction to insufficient counselling in practice prior to, during and after the treatment.' Psychological and Socio-Economical Determinants of Health: The Case of Inner German Migration
A substantial body of research has shown worse health conditions for East- vs.
West-Germany in the wake of reunification. In the present study, we investigate how
these differences between the two formerly divided regions developed and what
maintains them. Specifically, we consider the associations between health status,
income satisfaction, and health-related locus of control. In a quasi-experimental and
longitudinal study design, we are particularly interested in the differences between
individuals who stayed in East-Germany and those who were born in the East but
migrated to West-Germany. To this end, we examined data from seven waves of the
Saxony Longitudinal Study (2003–2009). Specifically, we tested a cross-lagged panel
model with random effects, which evinced very good model fit. Most parameters and
processes were equivalent between individuals who stayed in East-Germany vs. moved
to West-Germany. Crucially, there was the expected pattern of positive correlations
between health, income, and locus of control. In addition, we found substantially lower
values for all three of these variables for the individuals who stayed in East-Germany
(vs. moved to West-Germany). A possible explanation is the increase in socio-economic
status that the internal migrants experienced. These findings present an important
contribution of research in order to foster a better understanding on the social dynamics
in Germany related to internal/domesticmigrants and implications in the context of health
outcomes (e.g., significantly more unemployment in East vs. West-Germany), especially
since almost 20–25% of East-German citizens migrated to West-Germany. Until now,
there are no similar studies to the Saxony longitudinal project, since the data collection
started in 1987 and almost every year an identical panel has been surveyed; which can
be particularly useful for health authorities. The study mainly focuses on social science
research and deals with the phenomenon of reunification, approaching several subjects
such as mental and physical health, quality of life and the evaluation of the political
system. Yet even though many people have experienced such a migration process, there
has been little research on the subjects we approach. With our research we deepen the
understanding of the health consequences of internal migration
People diagnosed with schizophrenia
present empathy deficits that have been related to
their poor psychosocial functioning. The objectives
were: 1) analyse the relation between empathy, social
cognition and quality of life in subjects diagnosed with
schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders; 2) evaluate
these variables according to the severity of the
features.
Methods. Forty-one patients, divided into two groups
according to the level of severity, were included. A
battery of tests was applied: Interpersonal Reactivity
Index (IRI), GEOPTE scale of social cognition for
psychosis, World Health Organization Quality of Life
Assessment: Brief Version (WHOQOL-BREF), Clinical
Global Impression scale (CGI), Scale for the Assessment
of Positive Symptoms (SAPS) and Negative
Symptoms (SANS).
Results. There was a direct relationship between personal
anxiety and fantasy sub-scales of the IRI and the
GEOPTE scale, and an inverse relationship with several
dimensions of quality of life of the WHOQOL-BREF.
The GEOPTE scale had an inverse relation with all the
dimensions of quality of life evaluated. The mildly sick
group obtained scores that were significantly lower in
fantasy (15.44 vs. 20.12; p=0.001) and significantly higher
in psychological health (58.63 vs. 45.40; p=0.017) and
environment (67.00 vs. 53.68; p=0.006).
Conclusions. A relationship is found between empathy,
social condition and perceived quality of life in
people diagnosed with schizophrenia on programs of
psycho-social rehabilitation. Similarly, the existence of
relevant differences in these variables according to the
level of severity of the clinical features is underscore
Standard values and relationship-specific validity of the Bielefeld Relationship Expectations Questionnaire (BFPE)

Abstract

Background

The Bielefeld Partnership Expectations Questionnaire (BFPE) is a tool to assess attachment in the romantic relationships of adults. The attachment styles are operationalized as configuration patterns of scale scores. While convergent validity has already been investigated, discriminant validity is still lacking confirmation.

Methods

The present sample (n = 1509) is representative for the German population aged 18 to 50. The mean age was 34.6 years. Most of the participants lived in a relationship (77.3 %). Discriminant validity was analyzed using a marital quality questionnaire (PFB), a social support questionnaire (F-Soz-U K-14), and a life satisfaction questionnaire (FLZ).

Results

All the BFPE scales have a satisfying internal consistency between r = .79 and .86. Those individuals who showed a secure pattern, i.e. increased "Readiness for Self-Disclosure" and "Conscious Need for Care" as well as reduced "Fear of Rejection" experienced their partner as socially supportive, reported higher marital quality in all of its facets, and were more satisfied within the life-domains "family/children" and "relationship/sexuality". Standard values for each scale are presented.

Conclusions

The BFPE has repeatedly been verified as a short, reliable, and valid instrument applicable to research practice with healthy individuals as well as within clinical contexts.</p
Validating the German Version of the Quality of Relationship Inventory: Confirming the Three-Factor Structure and Report of Psychometric Properties
Research on psychosocial influences such as relationship characteristics has received increased attention in the clinical as well as social-psychological field. Several studies demonstrated that the quality of relationships, in particular with respect to the perceived support within intimate relationships, profoundly affects individuals' mental and physical health. There is, however, a limited choice of valid and internationally known assessments of relationship quality in Germany. We report the validation of the German version of the Quality of Relationships Inventory (QRI). First, we evaluated its factor structure in a representative German sample of 1.494 participants by means of confirmatory factor analysis. Our findings support the previously proposed three-factor structure. Second, importance and satisfaction with different relationship domains (family/children and relationship/sexuality) were linked with the QRI scales, demonstrating high construct validity. Finally, we report sex and age differences regarding the perceived relationship support, conflict and depth in our German sample. In conclusion, the QRI is a reliable and valid measurement to assess social support in romantic relationships in the German population
