    Statistical Model for Predicting Slump and Strength of Concrete Containing Date Seeds

    Incorporating agro-based waste in concrete can reduce environmental pollution and lead to preserving the ecosystem. In order to reduce trial and error in achieving desired slump and compressive strength of concrete containing Date Seed (DS), this paper examines the slump and compressive strength of concrete using date seeds as a partial replacement for crushed granite. Preliminary tests were conducted on the aggregates to ascertain their suitability for concrete production. Concrete with DS-crushed granite ratios of 0:100, 5:95, 10:90, 15:85, and 20:80 were prepared using a mix ratio of 1:2:4 and a water-cement ratio of 0.5. Slump loss was used to estimate the workability of the fresh concrete. The freshly prepared concrete was cast in 150 x 150 x 150 mm and the compressive strength was determined after curing by full immersion in water for 7, 14, 21 and 28 days. Results showed that the slump of concrete increased with an increase in the content of date seed. The compressive strength was inversely proportional to the date seed content with a DScrushed granite ratio of 20:80 recording the lowest compressive strength (20N/mm2 ). Linear regression models for slump and compressive strength were developed and found to be sufficient in explaining the experimental data based on a Mean Square Error (MSE) of 0.37 and 0.029 and R2 of 88% and 99% obtained for slump and compressive strength respectively. The study has concluded that DS can be used as a partial replacement for crushed granite in concrete and a linear model is sufficient in predicting the slump and strength of concrete containing date seed

    Comparative Antioxidant Effects of Two Separate Ethanolic Extracts Fed Female Albino Rats on Some Tissue Markers

    Garcinia kola and Curcuma longa possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-toxic properties which makes them ideal choices in traditional alternative medicine. Kolaviron and curcumin ethanoic extracts are from Garcinia kola and Curcuma longa respectively and have shown ample beneficial health effect in animal models of diseases and also in the prevention of hepatoxicity induced by several toxins.  The aim of the study was to compare the separate effects of kolaviron and curcumin ethanoic extracts on blood parameters in female Wister albino rats. Eighty-four female albino rats were used in this study and were grouped into fertile, infertile and pregnant rats in the investigation. Anti-oxidant markers such as catalase, superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione s-transferase (GST) were assayed for in this study.The result shows that both kolaviron and curcumin, possess antioxidant properties and the results from the three groups investigated, showed that the extracts had similar influence (anti-oxidants effect) on pregnancy, as kolaviron showed a bit more “potency”. In the infertile rats, both extracts present competing anti-oxidants effects on the organs. In conclusion, kolaviron presented a more effective anti-oxidants property across the three subject groups studied compared to curcumin.     The possibility of using fluid whey in comminuted meat products: capacity and viscosity of the model emulsions prepared using whey and muscle proteins

    The emulsion capacity (EC) of whey and sarcoplasmic proteins were low when they were used alone, but the EC and viscosity (EV) of total meat proteins (TMP) were higher than those values of other proteins investigated, including a combination of whey plus TMP. However, the solubility of the TMP proteins was lower than that of the other proteins investigated, probably due to the differences in the physico-chemical properties of whey and muscle proteins and the buffer used. In general, EC of whey proteins showed a significant alteration when used in combination with muscle proteins, while its solubility was not changed. The present results suggest that it is possible to use fluid whey in emulsion-type meat products and these studies should continue using actual meat emulsion systems. © 1995 Springer-Verlag

The number of samples taken was as many as 30 mothers, using simple random sampling. Analysis of data was carried out using ordinal wilcoxon sign rank test.     Studi Sebaran Parameter Fisika Kimia Di Perairan Porong Kabupaten Sidoarjo

    Perairan Muara Sungai Porong Kabupaten Sidoarjo merupakan daerah yang di sekitarnya masih banyak terdapat pemukiman, pertambakan atau perikanan budidaya. Pembuangan limbah dan lumpur ke Sungai Porong semakin memperparah beban Sungai Porong dari polutan yang berakibat air menjadi keruh, sedimentasi lumpur dan kualitas air di wilayah tersebut menurun tajam. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui sebaran konsentrasi parameter kualitas air yang meliputi suhu, kekeruhan, salinitas, pH dan DO di Perairan Porong, Kab. Sidoarjo. Metode penelitian yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif, yang diterapkan pada 12 titik stasiun. Pengambilan sampel dilaksanakan pada tanggal 18 Desember 2013. Data yang dikumpulkan sebagai variabel ukur adalah suhu, kekeruhan, salinitas, pH, DO dan kecepatan serta arah arus. Variabel pendukung meliputi data arah dan kecepatan arus dan peta bathimetri wilayah Perairan Porong. Data yang diperoleh selanjutnya dianalisis menggunakan program arc GIS 10, sehingga menghasilkan output berupa distribusi spasial. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa untuk parameter suhu mempunyai nilai sebaran berkisar 22-22,9 ⁰C. Parameter konsentrasi kekeruhan memiliki nilai sebaran berkisar 3,6-20,5 NTU, salinitas memiliki nilai sebaran berkisar 20-20,9 ppm, pH memiliki nilai sebaran berkisar 7-7,91 dan DO memiliki nilai sebaran 5-6,1 mg/l. Sebaran parameter fisika kimia perairan adalah menuju ke laut dengan arah ke Timur, dengan nilai konsentrasi yang berbeda antara satu parameter dengan parameter lainnya. Sebaran antar stasiun untuk konsentrasi DO semakin menjauhi muara memiliki nilai yang relatif tinggi, sedangkan sebaran antar stasiun untuk konsentrasi kekeruhan semakin menjauhi muara memiliki nilai konsentrasi yang menurun.     Effect of Al and Mg Doping on Optical Properties of ZnO Thin Films Prepared by Spin Coating

    This paper investigated the influence of aluminum and magnesium doping on the optical and electrical properties of zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films for solar cell application. zinc acetate dehydrates was used as starting material. Aluminum chloride and tin chloride were added to each solution to serve as dopants. X-ray diffractions were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) which revealed crystalline and hexagonal wurtzite structure. All the films showed more than 80% transparency in the visible region. The optical band gap of undoped znO thin film was found to be 3.12ev while that of Al-doped and Mg-doped znO film was estimated to be 3.16eV and 3.26eV respectively. The resistivity of the films measured were 2.51×10–4Ω cm for Al-doped, 2.53×10–4Ω cm for mg-doped and 2.61×10-4Ω cm for undoped znO respectively. The quality of the films deposited in this work is a promising window layer component of a solar cell. The variation in the band gap observed in this work could be explained by Burstein–Moss effect which was fully explained in the discussion section of this work

    Jaringan Saraf Radial Basis Probabilistic untuk Identifikasi Morfologi Benih Padi Rawa Kalimantan Selatan

    Machine vision berbasis jaringan saraf tiruan dan pemrosesan gambar digital merupakan metode alternatif yang dapat dilakukan untuk mengidentifikasi dan mengevaluasi keragaman varietas padi. Berbeda dengan metode pengamatan langsung yang memiliki tingkat subjektivitas tinggi dan metode kimiawi (PCR) yang bersifat destruktif dan mahal, machine vision berbasis jaringan saraf tiruan menawarkan sistem identifikasi dan evaluasi secara cepat, praktis, murah, akurat, serta bersifat non-destruktif. Paper ini membahas machine vision berbasis jaringan saraf tiruan sebagai teknologi alternatif untuk identifikasi varietas padi rawa Kalimantan Selatan berdasarkan ciri morfologinya, yaitu area, perimeter, major axis, minor axis, circularity, aspect ratio, roundness, dan feret untuk setiap sampel benih padi. Dalam paper ini, sistem identifikasi varietas benih padi menggunakan jaringan saraf radial basis probabilistic dengan optimalisasi bobot hidden center menggunakan algoritme orthogonal least square. Dari proses learning dihasilkan performa pelatihan sebesar 88.32% dan performa pengujian sebesar 88.21% dengan tingkat keberhasilan pada proses pelatihan dari masing-masing varietas bayar papuyu, bayar putih, benih kuning, benih putih, ketan, siam gadis, siam unus, dan karan dukuh masing-masing sebesar 100.00%, 92.59%, 88.89%, 92.59%, 92.59%, 81.48%, 100.00%, dan 100.00%. Untuk proses pengujian, tingkat keberhasilan masing-masing varietas ialah 100.00%, 87.50%, 88.89%, 100.00%, 88.89%, 88.89%, 100.00%, dan 100.00%

    A MODEL FOR DETERMINING THE SAFETY LEVEL OF OCCUPATIONAL WORK USING ACCIDENTS AND INJURIES MEASUREMENT PARAMETERS: A REVIEW

    Frequency Rate (FRR), Fatality Rate (FAR) and Severity Rate (SR) are common parameters used in communicating the research output of occupational accidental injuries. These parameters have been used to provide a model for classifying an occupational work activity into five level/degrees of safety ranging between Very Safe and Highly Unsafe. With a work activity defined as x: x ≀ 0.01, x ≀ 0.003 or x ≀ 0.03 indicates Very Safe Level while x > 0.04, x > 0.015 or x>0.11 indicates Highly Unsafe Level according to FRR, SR and FAR respectively. A case study is provided from an existing work to experiment the application of the model
