    Fabrication of porous Al2O3-based ceramics using combustion synthesized powders

    Porous Al2O3-based ceramics were fabricated from powders synthesized via a solution combustion process using starch and urea as fuels. Effects of the relative fuel-to-oxidant ratio (φe = 1.4, 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0, respectively) on open porosity, pore size distribution and flexural strength of the as-prepared porous Al2O3-based ceramics were investigated. Experimental results revealed that the densification ability of the as-synthesized powders increased significantly as φe increased, and open porosity, pore size distribution and flexural strength of the porous ceramics exhibited remarkable dependence on the densification ability of the powders instead of the weight fraction of the charred organic residuals in the powders. SEM micrographs disclosed that the porous ceramics from the precursors with φe = 1.8 or 2.0 exhibited significantly homogenous microstructures including pore size and pore distribution

    A Robust Cooperative Spectrum Sensing-Assisted Multiuser Resource Allocation Scheme

    Cognitive radio (CR), which is proposed as a solution for spectrum scarcity, imposes some threats to the network. One severe attack to cognitive radio network is the primary user emulation attack (PUEA), in which an attacker may transmit its signal with high power or mimic specific features of the primary user's signal to prevent secondary users from accessing the licensed spectrum. In this paper, we study a subcarrier and power allocation problem for orthogonal frequency division multiple access-(OFDMA-) based CR systems in the presence of PUEA. To maximize the system throughput while keeping the interference introduced to the primary user (PU) below given thresholds with a certain probability, a joint design of a robust cooperative spectrum sensing and a resource allocation scheme is proposed. In the proposed scheme, the inaccurate classification of PU signals and PUEA signals provided by robust cooperative spectrum sensing is utilized by resource scheduling module. To further exploit the underutilized spectrum bands, we also evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme in the hybrid overlay/underlay spectrum access mechanism. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme compared to conventional scheme regardless of the number of SUs or the kind of spectrum access mechanism being used

    META analysis on the effect of taijiquan on improving negative psychological symptoms of college students and the optimal dose

    BackgroundTaijiquan, as a physical and mental exercise, can improve the negative psychology of college students. However, it is still controversial, and the optimal exercise dose of taijiquan to interfere with negative psychology has not been evaluated.ObjectiveThis study is aimed at systematically evaluating the effect of taijiquan therapy on improving negative psychological symptoms of college students and its optimal intervention dose.MethodsSearch databases such as Web of Science, Embase, PubMed, CNKI, WFSD, etc. Collect high-quality relevant RCT studies. After screening, extracting, coding and counting the data, a META analysis is done through Review Manage 5.3 and Stata 15.0 software. PICOS established the eligibility criteria to select the studies as follows: (i) population - non-clinical of college students; (ii) intervention - taijiquan intervention; (iii) comparison - taijiquan intervention group and regular physical activity group; (iv) outcomes - depression, anxiety; and (v) study design - randomized controlled trial.ResultsA total of 12 articles and 1,000 samples were included. All of the participants are college students. Taijiquan therapy can significantly reduce the depression and anxiety symptoms of college students [SMD = −0.53, 95% CI (−0.82, −0.23)], [SMD = −0.49, 95% CI (−0.90, −0.09)], with statistical significance (P < 0.05). Subgroup analysis shows that: there is a precise focus on depression and anxiety symptoms. The intervention period is more than 12 weeks, and the best effect appears when people practice 3 times a week. The best single intervention time for depression symptoms is 60 min, and for anxiety symptoms 80–90 min. It is found that taijiquan combined with mindfulness intervention can significantly reduce negative psychological symptoms like depression and anxiety of college students than single taijiquan intervention. Funnel plot combined with sensitivity analysis, Begg, Egger test showed no publication bias.ConclusionTaijiquan intervention can effectively improve the negative psychological symptoms of college students, and it has great promotion value in colleges and universities.Systematic review registrationhttps://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO/, identifier: CRD42022314071

    Efficacy and safety of a combination of miglitol, metformin and insulin aspart in the treatment of type 2 diabetes

    Purpose: To study the clinical effect of combining insulin aspart with different drugs in the treatment oftype 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).Methods: Two hundred and thirty-seven T2DM patients admitted to the Endocrinology Department of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University from March to September 2018 were selected as subjects in this study. Miglitol and metformin were used in combination with insulin aspart in the treatment of T2DM. In addition, data on the effectiveness and safety of different treatment options,such as patient’s weight, waist circumference, blood glucose indicators, indices of heart, liver and kidney functions, and incidence of complications were recorded and compared between the two groups.Results: The use of a combination of miglitol and insulin aspart produced an excellent hypoglycaemic effect, and it significantly reduced the incidence of sensory neuropathy in the eyes and distal limbs (p < 0.05). The use of combination of metformin and insulin aspart effectively protected the heart and kidney, and prevented hypoglycaemia (p < 0.05).Conclusion: These results suggest that treatment with a combination of miglitol and insulin aspart is suitable for patients with T2DM whose blood sugar levels are out of control, while combined treatment with metformin and insulin aspart is more suited for patients who desire to reduce blood sugar and blood lipids through weight loss, and patients with cardiac and renal insufficiency

    Integrative single-cell RNA sequencing and metabolomics decipher the imbalanced lipid-metabolism in maladaptive immune responses during sepsis

    BackgroundTo identify differentially expressed lipid metabolism-related genes (DE-LMRGs) responsible for immune dysfunction in sepsis.MethodsThe lipid metabolism-related hub genes were screened using machine learning algorithms, and the immune cell infiltration of these hub genes were assessed by CIBERSORT and Single-sample GSEA. Next, the immune function of these hub genes at the single-cell level were validated by comparing multiregional immune landscapes between septic patients (SP) and healthy control (HC). Then, the support vector machine-recursive feature elimination (SVM-RFE) algorithm was conducted to compare the significantly altered metabolites critical to hub genes between SP and HC. Furthermore, the role of the key hub gene was verified in sepsis rats and LPS-induced cardiomyocytes, respectively.ResultsA total of 508 DE-LMRGs were identified between SP and HC, and 5 hub genes relevant to lipid metabolism (MAPK14, EPHX2, BMX, FCER1A, and PAFAH2) were screened. Then, we found an immunosuppressive microenvironment in sepsis. The role of hub genes in immune cells was further confirmed by the single-cell RNA landscape. Moreover, significantly altered metabolites were mainly enriched in lipid metabolism-related signaling pathways and were associated with MAPK14. Finally, inhibiting MAPK14 decreased the levels of inflammatory cytokines and improved the survival and myocardial injury of sepsis.ConclusionThe lipid metabolism-related hub genes may have great potential in prognosis prediction and precise treatment for sepsis patients

    Inhibiting the NLRP3 Inflammasome With MCC950 Ameliorates Isoflurane-Induced Pyroptosis and Cognitive Impairment in Aged Mice

    Nod-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation has been implicated in the pathogenesis of general anesthesia (GA)-induced neuroinflammation and cognitive impairment in aged rodents. However, the cellular basis for cognitive impairment is still not fully understood, and effective pharmacologic agents targeting the NLRP3 inflammasome during GA are lacking. This study explores the protective effects of the NLRP3 inflammasome inhibitor MCC950 on pyroptosis and cognitive impairment in aged mice exposed to isoflurane. Seventy-two 15-month-old male C57BL/6 mice were randomized to receive 2 h of 1.5% isoflurane plus 30% oxygen (O2) or 30% O2 alone, respectively. MCC950 (10 mg/kg) or vehicle was intraperitoneally administered 30 min before gas inhalation. Brain tissues were harvested for histochemical analysis and biochemical assays. Learning and memory abilities were evaluated by behavioral tests. We found that isoflurane GA caused upregulations of hippocampal NLRP3, cleaved caspase-1, interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and IL-18 and the activation of pyroptosis, which is NLRP3 inflammasome-dependent; this consequently gave rise to neuronal damage and cognitive impairment in aged mice. Interestingly, pretreatment with NLRP3 inflammasome inhibitor MCC950 not only provided a neuroprotective effect against the inflammasome activation but also ameliorated pyroptosis and cognitive impairment in aged mice exposed to isoflurane. Our data demonstrate that pyroptosis is involved in NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated isoflurane-induced cognitive impairment in aged mice and suggest that inhibiting the NLRP3 inflammasome with MCC950 may have clinically therapeutic benefits for elderly patients undertaking GA

    MCP-1 levels in astrocyte-derived exosomes are changed in preclinical stage of Alzheimer's disease

    BackgroundAlzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia in older adults. There is accumulating evidence that inflammatory processes play a critical role in AD pathogenesis. In this study, we investigated whether inflammatory factors in plasma and astrocyte-derived exosomes (ADEs) from plasma are differentially expressed in the early stages of AD and their potential role in pathological processes in the AD continuum.MethodWe included 39 normal controls (NCs), 43 participants with subjective cognitive decline (SCD), and 43 participants with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI)/AD. IL-6, IL-8, and MCP-1 in plasma and ADEs from plasma were evaluated using a commercial multiplex Luminex-based kit.ResultsPairwise comparisons between the groups showed no significant differences in plasma levels of IL-6, IL-8, or MCP-1. However, ADEs in the SCD group showed an increase in MCP-1 levels compared to the NC group. To differentiate the preclinical group, discriminant analysis was performed using sex, age, years of education, and genotype. This revealed a difference between the SCD and NC groups (area under the curve: 0.664). A Spearman correlation analysis of MCP-1 in plasma and ADEs showed no or weak correlation in the SCD (R = 0.150, p = 0.350) and aMCI/AD (R = 0.310, p = 0.041) groups, while a positive correlation in the NC group (R = 0.360, p = 0.026).ConclusionPlasma IL-6, IL-8, and MCP-1 levels were not significantly different. However, the concentration of MCP-1 in ADEs is slightly altered during the preclinical phase of AD, which could be a potential role of the central neuron system (CNS) immune response in the AD continuum.Clinical trial registrationwww.ClinicalTrials.gov, identifier: NCT03370744

    Endothelial Cell and Platelet Bioenergetics: Effect of Glucose and Nutrient Composition

    It has been suggested that cells that are independent of insulin for glucose uptake, when exposed to high glucose or other nutrient concentrations, manifest enhanced mitochondrial substrate oxidation with consequent enhanced potential and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS); a paradigm that could predispose to vascular complications of diabetes. Here we exposed bovine aortic endothelial (BAE) cells and human platelets to variable glucose and fatty acid concentrations. We then examined oxygen consumption and acidification rates using recently available technology in the form of an extracellular oxygen and proton flux analyzer. Acute or overnight exposure of confluent BAE cells to glucose concentrations from 5.5 to 25 mM did not enhance or change the rate of oxygen consumption (OCR) under basal conditions, during ATP synthesis, or under uncoupled conditions. Glucose also did not alter OCR in sub-confluent cells, in cells exposed to low serum, or in cells treated with added pyruvate. Likewise, overnight exposure to fatty acids of varying saturation had no such effects. Overnight exposure of BAE cells to low glucose concentration decreased maximal uncoupled respiration, but not basal or ATP related oxygen consumption. Labeled glucose oxidation to CO2 increased, but only marginally after high glucose exposure while oleate oxidation to CO2 decreased. Overnight exposure to linolenic acid, but not oleic or linoleic acid increased extracellular acidification consistent with enhanced glycolytic metabolism. We were unable to detect an increase in production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from BAE cells exposed to high medium glucose. Like BAE cells, exposure of human platelets to glucose did not increase oxygen consumption. As opposed to BAE cells, platelet mitochondria demonstrate less respiratory reserve capacity (beyond that needed for basal metabolism). Our data do not support the concept that exposure to high glucose or fatty acids accelerates mitochondrial oxidative metabolism in endothelial cells or platelets

    Feature extraction method for human ear image and its application in miner identificatio

    In view of problem of big error of existing features extraction method for ear image adopting geometrical shape extraction and algebra extraction, a novel feature extraction method for human ear image was proposed to apply to miner identification. The method uses three-scale canny operator to extract image edges of the helix, and adopts convex hull algorithm to extract key points of ear edge image, uses outer contour search algorithms to extract outer contour of ear image; constructs the ear image feature vector with the length ratio of point to the pole distance of outer ear contour and human ear in epipolar plane, which solves the problem of big error of ear geometry feature. The identification accuracy is 96% with the method to extract human ear image feature for miner identification
