Development of Transmission Line Employing Graphene-Silver Nanowire/PET Structure for Application in Flexible and Wearable Devices in X-Band Wireless Communication Systems
In this study, we fabricated a coplanar waveguide using a novel graphene-silver nanowire composite structure (GNCS) on a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate and then investigated its radio frequency (RF) characteristics. According to the measured results, the coplanar waveguide employing GNCS exhibited a substantially lower loss of transmission line than conventional waveguides. Furthermore, compared to the conventional graphene-based coplanar waveguide, the proposed structure allowed for lower skin depth and higher conductivity, resulting from the high electric conductivity of the silver nanowire. In addition, repetitive bending tests, which were performed to investigate the electric stability of the graphene-silver nanowire, showed that the coplanar waveguide employing GNCS offered substantially better electrical stability than the conventional graphene-based coplanar waveguide. These results indicate that the graphene-silver nanowire structure is a promising candidate for application in flexible wireless communication systems. Notably, this is also the first study to investigate the RF performance and electrical stability of a graphene-silver nanowire/PET structure
Effective data reduction algorithm for topological data analysis
One of the most interesting tools that have recently entered the data science
toolbox is topological data analysis (TDA). With the explosion of available
data sizes and dimensions, identifying and extracting the underlying structure
of a given dataset is a fundamental challenge in data science, and TDA provides
a methodology for analyzing the shape of a dataset using tools and prospects
from algebraic topology. However, the computational complexity makes it quickly
infeasible to process large datasets, especially those with high dimensions.
Here, we introduce a preprocessing strategy called the Characteristic Lattice
Algorithm (CLA), which allows users to reduce the size of a given dataset as
desired while maintaining geometric and topological features in order to make
the computation of TDA feasible or to shorten its computation time. In
addition, we derive a stability theorem and an upper bound of the barcode
errors for CLA based on the bottleneck distance.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, 2 table
Effect of grain boundaries on ion migration in stabilized δ-Bi2O3 thin- film electrolyte
Solid electrolytes with high oxygen-ion conductivity are of significant interest for many applications. Over the past several decades, numerous studies have been conducted on the effect of grain boundaries on the process of increasing the ionic conductivity of solid electrolytes. Given that nanocrystalline thin- or thick-films have been investigated in relation to lowering the operating temperature of solid electrolytes to less than 650 °C, more rigorous and quantitative assessments are necessary to determine how the ion transport characteristics are affected by the numerous interfaces formed in nano-grains devices.

PD-1 deficiency protects experimental colitis via alteration of gut microbiota
Programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) is a coinhibitory molecule and plays a pivotal role in immune regulation. Here, we demonstrate a role for PD-1 in pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Wild-type (WT) mice had severe wasting disease during experimentally induced colitis, while mice deficient for PD-1 (PD-1(-/-)) did not develop colon inflammation. Interestingly, PD-1(-/-) mice cohoused with WT mice became susceptible to colitis, suggesting that resistance of PD-1(-/-) mice to colitis is dependent on their gut microbiota. 16S rRNA gene-pyrosequencing analysis showed that PD-1(-/-) mice had altered composition of gut microbiota with significant reduction in Rikenellaceae family. These altered colon bacteria of PD-1(-/-) mice induced less amount of inflammatory mediators from colon epithelial cells, including interleukin (IL)-6, and inflammatory chemokines. Taken together, our study indicates that PD-1 expression is involved in the resistance to experimental colitis through altered bacterial communities of colon.112Ysciescopuskc
Barrier protection via Toll-like receptor 2 signaling in porcine intestinal epithelial cells damaged by deoxynivalnol
Additional file 2. IPEC-J2 cells pretreated with TLR2 ligand maintained the expression of MCP-1, GM-CSF and TLR2 against DON exposure. IPEC-J2 cells pretreated with or without TLR2 ligand for 24 h were exposed to DON. (A) The bar graph showed the mRNA levels of porcine mcp-1, gm-csf measured using real time-PCR at 1 and 6 h after DON exposure (n = 3). (B) The mRNA levels of porcine tlr2 were measured using real-time quantitative PCR analysis at 6 h. NT represents no treatment. Expression of each mRNA was presented relative to the expression of housekeeping gene, gapdh (n = 3). *P < 0.05; **P < 0.01; ***P < 0.001, determined by one-way ANOVA with Tukey’s posttest
Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1 Presenting as Male Infertility
Myotonic dystrophy 1 (DM1) is a multi-system disorder characterized by endocrine defects that include testicular and tubular atrophy, oligospermia and azoospermia, and increased follicle-stimulating hormone levels. We describe a rare case of DM1 presenting as infertility in a 29-year-old man
Manumycin from a new Streptomyces strain shows antagonistic effect against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)/vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) strains from Korean Hospitals
An antimicrobial compound, highly effective against multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria, purified from a Streptomyces strain was identified as manumycin. The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of manumycin against 8 different strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) were ranged 2 to 32 μg/ml. Similarly, MICs of manumycin against 4 vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) strains were ranged 8 to 32 μg/ml while it remained ineffective against 4 other VRE strains. Compared to vancomycin, manumycin provided slightly weaker activity against MRSA strains but stronger activity against 4 VRE strains. This is the first report of antagonistic effect of manumycin against MDR pathogens. Keywords: Manumycin, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE)African Journal of Biotechnology Vol. 12(17), pp. 2249-225
Novel LMNA Gene Mutation in a Patient With Atypical Werner's Syndrome
Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS) and Werner's syndrome are representative types of progeroid syndrome. LMNA (Lamin A/C) gene mutation with atypical Werner's syndrome have recently been reported. Atypical Werner's syndrome with the severe metabolic complications, the extent of the lipodystrophy is associated with A133L mutation in the LMNA gene and these patients present with phenotypically heterogeneous disorders. We experienced a 15-yr-old Korean female with progeroid features, generalized lipodystrophy, hypertriglyceridemia, fatty liver, steatohepatitis, and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Skin fibroblasts from the patient showed marked abnormal nuclear morphology, compared with that from normal persons. Gene analysis revealed that this patient had T506del of exon 2 in the LMNA gene. We report here the first case of atypical Werner's syndrome with frameshift mutation that was caused by T506del
