    Effects of Aromatherapy on Stress, Sleep, Nausea and Vomiting during Patient Controlled Analgesia Treatment of Patients with Hysterectomy

    PURPOSE: The purpose of study was to examine effects of aromatherapy on stress, sleep, nausea and vomiting of women after laparoscopic hysterectomy. METHODS: The participants were 60 women who had laparoscopic hysterectomy: experiment group for aromatherapy (n=30) and control group for routine care (n=30). The experimental group received inhalation aromatherapy for 5 minutes, twice; the first was done right after the operation, the second was at 9 pm before sleep on the same day--while the control group had no inhalation. Data were collected from July to September, 2012 at G hospital. RESULTS: The degree of psychological stress was not significantly different between two groups (t=-1.96, p= .054). Yet, there were significant differences between two groups for degree of physiological stress (t=-3.20, p= .002), the level of cortisol (t=-2.01, p= .049), the score of sleep status (t=2.47, p= .016), the score of sleep satisfaction (t=2.43, p= .018), and the score for nausea and vomiting (t=-2.58, p= .012). CONCLUSION: Inhalation aromatherapy using the mixed oil of lavender, mandarin, and marjoram was effective in decreasing the level of physiological stress, cortisol, and the score for nausea and vomiting, and also allowed the participants to have a better sleep. Therefore, inhalation aromatherapy could be effective in improving the quality of life of these women during recovery

    BACKGROUND: Atlantoaxial instability (AAI) is primarily a congenital neurological disorder affecting young toy-breed dogs. So far, most studies have focused on bones and ligaments related to AAI, and there are no studies on the suboccipital muscles (SOMs) that occupy a large area from the occipital bone to C2 in dogs. This study evaluated the cross-sectional area (CSA) and fat infiltration of the SOMs using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), specifically, T1-weighted images, in normal dogs (≤ 5 kg) and AAI dogs. The relationship between the severity of the neurological symptoms of AAI (group A and group B) and the values from MRI was also assessed. RESULTS: AAI dogs had significantly smaller CSA (P = 0.029) and greater fat infiltration (P = 0.044) of the SOMs compared to normal dogs. AAI dogs with mild neurological symptoms for a long period (group A) had greater fat infiltration than AAI dogs with severe neurological symptoms (group B) (P = 0.035). CONCLUSIONS: The muscle changes are most likely due to spinal cord compression resulting from instability; however, the possibility that chronic changes of the muscle may play an additional role in maintaining stability in this region cannot be excluded.     Expanding the diversity of mycobacteriophages: insights into genome architecture and evolution.

    Mycobacteriophages are viruses that infect mycobacterial hosts such as Mycobacterium smegmatis and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. All mycobacteriophages characterized to date are dsDNA tailed phages, and have either siphoviral or myoviral morphotypes. However, their genetic diversity is considerable, and although sixty-two genomes have been sequenced and comparatively analyzed, these likely represent only a small portion of the diversity of the mycobacteriophage population at large. Here we report the isolation, sequencing and comparative genomic analysis of 18 new mycobacteriophages isolated from geographically distinct locations within the United States. Although no clear correlation between location and genome type can be discerned, these genomes expand our knowledge of mycobacteriophage diversity and enhance our understanding of the roles of mobile elements in viral evolution. Expansion of the number of mycobacteriophages grouped within Cluster A provides insights into the basis of immune specificity in these temperate phages, and we also describe a novel example of apparent immunity theft. The isolation and genomic analysis of bacteriophages by freshman college students provides an example of an authentic research experience for novice scientists

    Physical Processes in Sea Fog Formation and Characteristics of Turbulent Air-Sea Fluxes at Socheongcho Ocean Research Station in the Yellow Sea

    Copyright © 2022 Yun and Ha.The Yellow Sea is the most fog-prone region of the East Asian marginal seas. Since sea fog is caused due to complex interactions between atmospheric and oceanic environments, direct observations can help understand the physical processes involved in fogging over the oceans. Completed in 2014, the Socheongcho Ocean Research Station (S-ORS) plays a critical role in monitoring air-sea interactions over the Yellow Sea. This study aimed to evaluate the conditions favorable for fog generation and the physical processes underlying it using a suite of observations and turbulent heat flux data from S-ORS. First, we used the visibility data from S-ORS to quantify the frequency of sea fog over the Yellow Sea. From April to June 2016, sea-fog occurred 61 times, with a maximum duration of 135 h (approximately 5.6 days). Next, to understand the origin and characteristics of air mass associated with fog events, we classified the primary airflow paths in the region using a Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory model. Among the four clusters identified from the cluster analysis, the third and fourth had distinct physical properties characteristic of cold and warm fog, respectively. The third cluster was characterized by relatively weak or negative heat advection and weak vertical mixing, while the fourth one featured strong positive heat transport and moisture convergence over the Yellow Sea. Finally, based on cluster analysis, we choose the representative cases related to these two clusters observed at S-ORS and compared the characteristics of turbulent air-sea fluxes associated with fog formations.11Nsciescopu

    Trends and Spatio-Temporal Variability of Summer Mean and Extreme Precipitation across South Korea for 1973–2022

    Climate change has altered the frequency, intensity, and timing of mean and extreme precipitation. Extreme precipitation has caused tremendous socio-economic losses, and severe impacts on human life, livelihood, and ecosystems. In recent years, heavy rainfall events occurred during the boreal summer (June-to-August) frequently and sporadically over South Korea. Given that its severity, a call for an urgent investigation of summer extreme rainfall is needed. Although many previous studies have addressed daily extreme precipitation, hourly extreme rainfall still needs to be thoroughly investigated. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the trends, spatio-temporal variability, and long-term variations in mean and extreme precipitation over South Korea during the boreal summertime using daily and hourly observational data through various analysis methods. During the past 50 years (1973–2022), there has been a notable escalation in maximum hourly precipitation, although the boreal summer mean precipitation has increased only marginally. Regionally, an increase in mean and extreme rainfall occurred in the northern part of the central region and the southern coast of the Korean peninsula. Moreover, the increase in intensity and frequency of extreme precipitation as well as in dry day have contributed more to the total summer precipitation in recent years.     Evaluation of the ureteral jet in dogs by using color Doppler ultrasonography

    Ureteral jets are the result of a forceful ejection of urine from the vesicoureteral junction into the urinary bladder. By using color Doppler ultrasonography (US), we aimed to identify distinct ureteral jets in dogs, provide insight into ureteral obstruction, and facilitate study of urodynamics and vesicoureteric sphincter function via pulsed Doppler US. Color Doppler US was applied to detect urinary flow from the right ureteral orifices in eight healthy beagles. Under anesthesia, 0.9% saline (2.5 mL/kg/h) and furosemide (0.5 mg/kg) were administered intravenously to assist in detection of distinct ureteral jets and examine their frequency, velocity, duration, and waveform. In all dogs, ureteral jets were visualized under diuresis and anesthesia within 2 to 5 min (mean 3.57 ± 0.90 min) of the furosemide injection. Mean frequency, peak velocity, and duration of right ureteral jets in seven dogs in whom six ureteral jet waveform patterns were identified were 9.86 ± 3.09 jets/min, 34.07 ± 10.02 cm/sec, and 2.82 ± 1.08 sec, respectively. During the 10 min period starting 10 min after the initial jet appeared, only three waveforms were identified.     Transdermal Delivery of Hyaluronic Acid - Human Growth Hormone Conjugate

    Hyaluronic acid (HA) is one of the major components of extracellular matrix (ECM). Keratinocyte and fibroblast are known to have HA receptors in the skin. Fibroblast also has human growth hormone (hGH) receptors. In this work, HA hGH conjugate was developed as a receptor mediated transdermal delivery system of protein drugs. HA hGH conjugate was synthesized by specific coupling reaction between aldehyde modified HA and the N-terminal amine group of hGH. We could confirm the proliferative effect of HA on keratinocyte and fibroblast, and the biological activity of HA hGH conjugate in fibroblast with an elevated expression level of phosphorylated Janus kinase 2 (p-JAK2). Interestingly, fluorescence microscopy clearly visualized the dramatically enhanced penetration of HA hGH conjugate through the dorsal skin of mice after topical treatment with FITC labeled HA hGH conjugate. According to pharmacokinetic analysis, HA hGH conjugate appeared to be delivered through the skin into the blood stream possibly by the receptor mediated transdermal delivery. This work confirms the feasibility of using the HA hGH conjugate as a model system for the receptor mediated transdermal delivery of protein drugs and their further exploitation for various cosmetic and tissue engineering applications.
