Logical Operation Based Literature Association with Genes and its application, PosMed.

PosMed prioritizes candidate genes for positional cloning by employing our original database search engine GRASE, which uses an inferential process similar to an artificial neural network comprising documental neurons (or 'documentrons') that represent each document contained in databases such as MEDLINE and OMIM (Yoshida, _et al_. 2009, Makita, _et al_. 2009). PosMed immediately ranks the candidate genes by connecting phenotypic keywords to the genes through connections representing gene–gene interactions other biological relationships, such as metabolite–gene, mutant mouse–gene, drug–gene, disease–gene, and protein–protein interactions, ortholog data, and gene–literature connections.

To make proper relationships between genes and literature, we manually curate queries, which are defined by logical operation rules, against MEDLINE. For example, to detect a set of MEDLINE documents for the AT1G03880 gene in _A. thaliana_, we applied the following logical query: (‘AT1G03880’ OR ‘CRU2’ OR ‘CRB’ OR ‘CRUCIFERIN 2' OR ‘CRUCIFERIN B’) AND (‘Arabidopsis’) NOT (‘chloroplast RNA binding’). Curators refined these queries in mouse, rice and _A. thaliana_. For human and rat genes, we use mouse curation results via ortholog genes in PosMed.

The purpose of this paper is to offer alternative ways in the instruction of the Nature of Science (NOS), while making connections with areas of knowledge outside the natural sciences. It focuses on the teaching of NOS in the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course of the International Baccalaureate Organization, which is a curriculum that connects NOS with other areas of knowledges. To fulfil the purpose of this research, I analyzed two TOK course textbooks from two points of view. The first of these points refers to the question of what are the tenets of NOS that relate to other areas of knowledge. The second one explores the role of NOS in those cases in which natural sciences connect with other areas of knowledge. After pondering these two questions, I extracted an example from educational materials, and analyzed in detail the role of NOS..

The objective of this study was to investigate infection control from corpses in medical facilities. A literature review was conducted on the infection control from corpses in postmortem care, and a survey on the issue was conducted among nurses. The results showed that infection control corpses associated with postmortem care in clinical settings were implemented according to the concept of universal precautions, such as wearing gloves. Some nurses were concerned about leakage of fluid from corpses after postmortem care. The results suggested the need for instructing family members to wash their hands after handling deceased family members, and providing morticians with information on infections affecting particular corpses. Problems such as fluid leakage from corpses after discharge from hospital have been reported, and it is therefore important for postmortem care practitioners to understand the features of corpses and provide support

Removal of nitrogen by Antarctic yeast cells at low temperature

Nitrate removal in a medium (at 5°C ) and the effect of culture temperature on the fatty acid composition were investigated using Candida sp. which was isolated from the upper layer of Lake Vanda in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica. The strain was cultured at 5°C aerobically, on a synthetic medium containing potassium nitrate (NO_3-N, 100 mgl^) as a nitrogen source, and examined the effects of pH and chlorine on growth and NO_3-N removal in the medium. Within the pH of 3 to 7 the yeast cells exhibited a similar removal of nitrate level. The strain grew well and also removed nitrate at chlorine concentrations of 5 and 10 mgl^ but did not grow at chlorine concentration of 20 mgl^. Decreasing the growth temperature induced an increase in the content of linolenic acid (18:3) in the yeast cells

The purpose of this study is to clarify the quality of life (QOL) of in-unit hemodialysis patients. The subjects were 341 in-unit hemodialysis patients who agreed to participate in this study from four hospitals in Nagoya, Osaka, Okayama, and Hirosima. The Ferrans and Powers Quality of Life Index (QLI) Hemodialysis version (an authorised translation into Japanese) was used for measuring perceived quality of life. By factor analysis, 'socio-economic functioning', 'support from family and others', 'well-being of mind', 'physical health' and 'medical treatment and education' were extracted as five factors of the QOL. The QOL score on the 'support from family and others' was the highest of all, whereas 'physical health' and 'socio-economic functioning' were lower than other three factors. These results showed importance of physical and social dimensions in caring hemodialysis patients in clinical practice
