Supercooling of Homogeneous Liquid Phase of Liquid Metals and Alloys -Poor Supercooling around the Eutectic Composition of Liquid Ni-Nb System
To study the supercooling of many liquid metals with high melting temperatures, the investigation was performed for the cooling curves of electrostatic levitation (ESL) experiments, which had been originally obtained for the measurements of many physical properties. The largest supercooling over the literature values was found for liquid Ru (428 K), Ta (721 K), W (601 K), and Ir (438 K), where temperatures in the parentheses mean the supercooling of respective liquid metals. This indicates the validity of ESL for the supercooling experiments of liquid metals and alloys because of being rather free from the heterogeneous nucleation. This ESL was applied to the study of supercooling of homogeneous liquid phase in the composition range from 29 at% Nb to 71 at% Nb of eutectic Ni-Nb system, whose eutectic point is present at 40.5 at% Nb and 1448 K. The experimental result shows a poor supercooling tendency of homogeneous liquid phase around the eutectic composition in spite of large supercooling far apart from this eutectic composition. This characteristic feature was discussed based on the classical nucleation theory coupled with the knowledge recently found, the existence of concentration fluctuations in the homogeneous liquid phase near the eutectic point
Serum amyloid alpha 1-2 are not required for liver inflammation in the 4T1 murine breast cancer model

Despite the well-known coincidence of acute phase response and inflammation, the direct roles of SAA proteins in inflammation in the cancer context remains incompletely characterized, particularly in vivo. Here, we investigate the in vivo significance of SAA proteins in liver inflammation in the 4T1 murine breast cancer model. 4T1 cancers elevate the expression of SAA1 and SAA2, the two major murine acute phase proteins in the liver. The elevation of Saa1-2 correlates with the up-regulation of immune cell-related genes including neutrophil markers. To examine this correlation in detail, we generate mice that lack Saa1-2 and investigate immune-cell phenotypes. RNA-seq experiments reveal that deletion of Saa1-2 does not strongly affect 4T1-induced activation of immune cell-related genes in the liver. Flow cytometry experiments demonstrate the dispensable roles of SAA1-2 in cancer-dependent neutrophil infiltration to the liver. Consistently, 4T1-induced gene expression changes in bone marrow do not require Saa1-2. This study clarifies the negligible contribution of SAA1-2 proteins in liver inflammation in the 4T1 breast cancer model
Absolute X-ray energy measurement using a high-accuracy angle encoder
This paper presents an absolute X-ray photon energy measurement method that uses a Bond diffractometer. The proposed system enables the prompt and rapid in situ measurement of photon energies over a wide energy range. The diffractometer uses a reference silicon single-crystal plate and a highly accurate angle encoder called SelfA. The performance of the system is evaluated by repeatedly measuring the energy of the first excited state of the potassium-40 nuclide. The excitation energy is determined as 29829.39 (6) eV, and this is one order of magnitude more accurate than the previous measurement. The estimated uncertainty of the photon energy measurement was 0.7 p.p.m. as a standard deviation and the maximum observed deviation was 2 p.p.m
Broadened quantum critical ground state in a disordered superconducting thin film
Abstract A superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) in two dimensions is a prototypical quantum phase transition (QPT) with a clear quantum critical point (QCP) at zero temperature (T = 0). The SIT is induced by a field B and observed in disordered thin films. In some of weakly disordered or crystalline thin films, however, an anomalous metallic (AM) ground state emerges over a wide B range between the superconducting and insulating phases. It remains a fundamental open question how the QPT picture of the SIT is modified when the AM state appears. Here we present measurements of the Nernst effect N, which has great sensitivity to the fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter. From a thorough contour map of N in the B-T plane, we found a thermal-to-quantum crossover line of the superconducting fluctuations, a so-called ghost-temperature line associated with the QPT, as well as a ghost-field line associated with a thermal transition. The QCP is identified as a T = 0 intercept of the ghost-temperature line inside the AM state, which verifies that the AM state is a broadened critical state of the SIT
Chemical Diagnosis of Calcium Pyrophosphate Deposition Disease of the Temporomandibular Joint: A Case Report
Calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) deposition disease is a benign disorder characterized by acute gouty arthritis-like attacks and first reported by McCarty. CPPD deposition disease rarely occurs in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), and although confirmation of positive birefringence by polarized light microscopy is important for diagnosis, it is not reliable because other crystals also show birefringence. We reported a case of CPPD deposition disease of the TMJ that was diagnosed by chemical analysis. A 47-year-old man with a chief complaint of persistent pain in the right TMJ and trismus was referred to our department in 2020. Radiographic examination revealed destruction of the head of the mandibular condyle and cranial base with a neoplastic lesion involving calcification tissue. We suspected CPPD deposition disease and performed enucleation of the white, chalky masses. Histopathologically, we confirmed crystal deposition with weak birefringence. SEM/EDS revealed that the light emitting parts of Ca and P corresponded with the bright part of the SEM image. Through X-ray diffraction, almost all peaks were confirmed to be CPPD-derived. Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy revealed a Ca/P ratio of nearly 1. These chemical analyses further support the histological diagnosis of CPPD deposition disease
Noncontact thermophysical property measurement of liquid cerium by electrostatic levitation
The knowledge of thermophysical properties of active metals is critical to understand their metallurgical processes and further industrial applications. However, due to high reactivity and melt contamination from a crucible and gaseous environment, accurate values of the properties are hard to obtain using conventional methods such as the sessile-drop method. In the present Study, a vacuum electrostatic levitator was used to circumvent these difficulties and enabled the noncontact determination of thermophysical properties of liquid cerium even in an undercooled state. Associations between alkaline phosphatase and hypertension in relation to circulating CD34-positive cell levels pertaining to elderly Japanese men
Serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) could be an indicator of osteoblastic activity, which initiates hematopoietic stem cell (CD34-positive cell) production in bone marrow. Since chronic inflammation, which is a known risk factor for hypertension and endothelium dysfunction, stimulates bone marrow activity, ALP could be positively associated with hypertension. To clarify those associations, we conducted a cross-sectional study of 479 elderly Japanese men aged 60-69. Circulating CD34-positive cell levels could influence associations between serum ALP and hypertension because CD34-positive cell production is also a factor known to contribute to endothelial repair. Therefore, participants were stratified by the median value of circulating CD34-positive cell levels (1.00 cells/μL). A low level of circulating CD34-positive cells was identified in 240 members of the study population. A significantly positive association of ALP with hypertension was detected among participants with low circulating CD34-positive cell levels (multivariable-OR (odds ratio) for hypertension resulting from a 1 standard deviation (SD) increment in serum ALP (58.3 IU/L) = 1.44 (1.06, 1.95)) but not among those with high CD34-positive cell levels (multivariable-OR=0.91 (0.67, 1.23)). We also observed a significant effect of the interaction of circulating CD34-positive cell levels on the association between serum ALP and hypertension (multivariable p=0.011). Serum ALP was found to be positively associated with hypertension among elderly participants with low but not with high circulating CD34-positive cell levels. Since CD34-positive cells are a factor known to contribute to endothelial repair, capability for endothelial repair can be expected to have an effect on the association between serum ALP and hypertension
