Bosonic Memory Channels
We discuss a Bosonic channel model with memory effects. It relies on a
multi-mode squeezed (entangled) environment's state. The case of lossy Bosonic
channels is analyzed in detail. We show that in the absence of input energy
constraints the memory channels are equivalent to their memoryless
counterparts. In the case of input energy constraint we provide lower and upper

Researching ‘bogus’ asylum seekers, ‘illegal’ migrants and ‘crimmigrants’
Both immigration and criminal laws are, at their core, systems of inclusion and exclusion. They are designed to determine whether and how to include individuals as members of society or exclude them from it, thereby, creating insiders and outsiders (Stumpf 2006). Both are designed to create distinct categories of people — innocent versus guilty, admitted versus excluded or, as majority would say, ‘legal’ versus ‘illegal’ (Stumpf 2006). Viewed in that light, perhaps it is not surprising that these two areas of law have become inextrica- bly connected in the official discourses. When politicians and policy makers (and also law enforcement authorities and tabloid press) seek to raise the barriers for non-citizens to attain membership in society, it is unremarkable that they turn their attention to an area of the law that similarly func- tions to exclude the ‘other’ — transforming immigrants into ‘crimmigrants’.1 As a criminological researcher one then has to rise up to the challenges of disentangling these so-called officially constructed (pseudo) realities, and breaking free from a continued dominance of authoritative discourses, and developing an alternative understanding of ‘crimmigration’ by connecting the processes of criminal is ation and ‘other ing’ with poverty, xe no-racism and other forms of social exclusion (see Institute of Race Relations 1987; Richmond 1994; Fekete 2001; Bowling and Phillips 2002; Sivanandan 2002; Weber and Bowling 2004)
Cosmological Perturbations of Quantum-Mechanical Origin and Anisotropy of the Microwave Background
Cosmological perturbations generated quantum-mechanically (as a particular
case, during inflation) possess statistical properties of squeezed quantum
states. The power spectra of the perturbations are modulated and the angular
distribution of the produced temperature fluctuations of the CMBR is quite
specific. An exact formula is derived for the angular correlation function of
the temperature fluctuations caused by squeezed gravitational waves. The
predicted angular pattern can, in principle, be revealed by the COBE-type

Phase-covariant cloning of coherent states
We consider the problem of phase-covariant cloning for coherent states. We
show that an experimental scheme based on ideal phase measurement and
feedforward outperforms the semiclassical procedure of ideal phase measurement
and preparation in terms of fidelity. A realistic scheme where the ideal phase
measurement is replaced with double-homodyne detection is shown to be unable to
overcome the semiclassical cloning strategy. On the other hand, such a
realistic scheme is better than semiclassical cloning based on double-homodyne

Husimi's function and quantum interference in phase space
We discuss a phase space description of the photon number distribution of non
classical states which is based on Husimi's function and does not
rely in the WKB approximation. We illustrate this approach using the examples
of displaced number states and two photon coherent states and show it to
provide an efficient method for computing and interpreting the photon number
distribution . This result is interesting in particular for the two photon
coherent states which, for high squeezing, have the probabilities of even and

Clustering of childhood leukaemia in Hong Kong: association with the childhood peak and common acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and with population mixing.
Incidence data of childhood leukaemia (CL) in Hong Kong (1984-90) have been analysed for evidence of variation between small areas. All cases (n=261) were classified by morphological cell type, with the majority (n=205) being acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), and haematological review has permitted immunophenotypic classification for 73% of these. The data have been examined for evidence of spatial clustering within small census areas (TPUs) and for association with population mixing, with attention focused on those subgroups (especially the childhood peak of ALL--taken here to be diagnoses in children from 24 months up to the seventh birthday--and common ALL) which, it has been hypothesized, may be caused by unusual patterns of exposure and response to common infections. For the whole of Hong Kong, there was evidence of spatial clustering of ALL at ages 0-4 years (P = 0.09) and in the childhood peak (P<0.05). When these analyses were restricted to TPUs where extreme population mixing may have occurred, overall incidence was elevated and significant evidence of clustering was found for ALL (P<0.007) at these ages and for the common ALL in the childhood peak (P = 0.032). Replication of the analyses for subsets of leukaemia that were not dominated by the childhood peak of ALL found no evidence of clustering. This is the first investigation of an association between population mixing and childhood leukaemia in Asia and the first to include clustering and to consider particular subsets. The results are supportive of the 'infectious' aetiology hypothesis for subsets of childhood leukaemia, specifically common ALL in the childhood peak
Covariant quantum measurements which maximize the likelihood
We derive the class of covariant measurements which are optimal according to
the maximum likelihood criterion. The optimization problem is fully resolved in
the case of pure input states, under the physically meaningful hypotheses of
unimodularity of the covariance group and measurability of the stability
subgroup. The general result is applied to the case of covariant state
estimation for finite dimension, and to the Weyl-Heisenberg displacement
estimation in infinite dimension. We also consider estimation with multiple
copies, and compare collective measurements on identical copies with the scheme
of independent measurements on each copy. A "continuous-variables" analogue of
the measurement of direction of the angular momentum with two anti-parallel

Position-momentum local realism violation of the Hardy type
We show that it is, in principle, possible to perform local realism violating
experiments of the Hardy type in which only position and momentum measurements
are made on two particles emanating from a common source. In the optical
domain, homodyne detection of the in-phase and out-of-phase amplitude
components of an electromagnetic field is analogous to position and momentum
measurement. Hence, local realism violations of the Hardy type are possible in
