    Production lot sizing with rework and fixed quantity deliveries

    This paper is concerned with determination of the optimal lot size for an economic production quantity (EPQ) model with the reworking of random defective items and fixed quantity multiple deliveries. Classic EPQ model assumes continuous issuing policy for satisfying product demand and perfect quality production for all items produced. However, in real life vendor-buyer integrated production-inventory system, multi-delivery policy is used practically in lieu of the continuous issuing policy and generation of defective items during production run is inevitable. In this study, all nonconforming items produced are considered to be repairable and are reworked in each cycle when regular production ends. The finished items can only be delivered to customers if the whole lot is quality assured at the end of the rework. Fixed quantity multiple installments of the finished batch are delivered to customers at a fixed interval of time. The long-run average integrated cost function per unit time is derived. A closed-form optimal batch size solution to the problem is obtained. A numerical example demonstrates its practical usage

    Satisfying multiproduct demand with a FPR-based inventory system featuring expedited rate and scraps

    Facing stiff competition in worldwide markets, capability of meeting timely demands of multiproduct and satisfying customer’s desired product quality are essential to present-day manufacturers. Motivated by achieving the aforementioned goals, this research intends to find most economic common cycle length for a multiproduct finite production rate (FPR)-based inventory system, wherein, imperfect production process with expedited fabrication rate and random scrap is assumed. Extra setup and unit costs are associated with the adjusted rate, and imperfect products are screened and scrapped. A mathematical model is cautiously constructed to examine and resolve the problem. A numerical illustration is employed to exhibit the applicability of the proposed method. Except finding the most economic common cycle time for the problem, core contribution of this study also is associated with the individual and combined impact(s) of important factors to the problem, and hence, enabling management of manufacturing firms to make efficient/cost-effective decision and gain competitive advantages

    Multiple metallic-shell nanocylinders for surface-enhanced spectroscopes

    The optical properties of multiple dielectric-core-gold-shell nanocylinder pairs are investigated by two-dimensional finite difference time domain method. The core-shell cylinders are assumed to be of the same dimension and composition. For normal incidence, the diffraction spectra of multiple cylinder pairs contain the lightning-rod plasmon mode, and the electric field intensity is concentrated in the gap between the nanocylinder pairs in the infrared region. The resonance wavelength and local field enhancement of this plasmon mode can be tuned by varying the pair-distance between the pairs, the gap-distance between the pairs, and the optical constants of the dielectric-core and the surrounding medium. The results show that the multiple core-shell nanocylinder pair contains the plasmon mode same as that of the solid metallic cylinder pairs at the long wavelength part of the spectrum. The large electric field intensity in the infrared region at long wavelength makes multiple core-shell cylinders as ideal candidates for surface-enhanced spectroscopes

    A single-producer multi-retailer integrated inventory model with a rework process

    This study considers a single-producer multi-retailer integrated inventory model with the reworking of random defective items produced. The objective is to find the optimal production lot size and optimal number of shipments that minimizes total expected costs for such a specific supply chains system. It is assumed that a product is manufactured by a producer. All items are screened for quality purpose and random nonconforming items will be picked up and reworked at the end of regular production in each cycle. After the entire lot is quality assured, multiple shipments will be delivered synchronously to m different retailers in each production cycle. Each retailer has its own annual product demand, unit stock holding cost, and fixed and variable delivery costs. Mathematical modeling and analysis is used to deal with the proposed model and to derive the expected system cost. Hessian matrix equations are employed to prove the convexity of the cost function. As a result, a closed-form optimal replenishment-delivery policy for such a specific single-producer multi-retailer integrated inventory model is obtained. A numerical example is provided to show the practical usage of the proposed model

    A positive feedback loop of IL-17B-IL-17RB activates ERK/β-catenin to promote lung cancer metastasis

    Inflammation contributes to the development and progression of cancer. Interleukin-17 (IL-17) is an inflammatory cytokine that functions in inflammation and cancer, as well as several other cellular processes. In this study, we investigated the roles and the prognostic value of IL-17 and the IL-17 receptor (IL-17R) in lung cancer. Gene expression microarray analysis followed by Kaplan-Meier survival curve showed that IL-17B was associated with poor patient survival, and IL-17B receptor (IL-17RB) was up-regulated in lung cancer tissue compared with normal tissue. Expression of IL-17RB was associated with lymph node metastasis and distant metastasis, as well as poor patient survival. IL-17RB overexpression significantly increased cancer cell invasion/migration and metastasis in vitro and in vivo. IL-17RB induced ERK phosphorylation, resulting in GSK3β inactivation and leading to β-catenin up-regulation. IL-17RB also participated in IL-17B synthesis via the ERK pathway. IL-17RB activation is required for IL-17B-mediated ERK phosphorylation. Taken together, IL-17B-IL-17RB signaling and ERK participate in a positive feedback loop that enhances invasion/migration ability in lung cancer cell lines. IL-17RB may therefore serve as an independent prognostic factor and a therapeutic target for lung cancer

    The joint influence of quality assurance and postponement on a hybrid multi-item manufacturing-delivery decision-making

    The present research explores the collective influence of quality assurance and postponement on a hybrid multiproduct replenishing-delivery decision-making. Assume the required multiproduct has a standard (common) component, and our replenishing-delivery model has incorporated a two-phase postponement strategy. The first phase makes all standard components and hires an external supplier to partially provide the required parts to cut short the needed uptime. In contrast, the second phase fabricates the finished multiproduct in sequence. To ensure the desired merchandise quality, we apply a quality-assurance action to the in-house processes to screen and remove scrap items and rework the repairable defects in both stages. Upon completing each merchandise, these products are transported to the customer in n fixed-quantity shipment in fixed-time intervals. We employ math modeling and formulating approaches to gain the overall supply-chain operating expenses comprising subcontracting, fabricating, stock holding, transportation, and customer holding costs. By minimizing system operating expenses, this research determines the optimal replenishing-delivery policy. Lastly, we give a numerical example to demonstrate our study’s applicability and usefulness/capability for facilitating managerial decision-making

    Gender differences in ankylosing spondylitis-associated cumulative healthcare utilization: a population-based cohort study

    BACKGROUND: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is one of the most common rheumatic diseases with gender differences in prevalence and clinical presentation. This study aimed to examine whether such gender differences are correlated with cumulative healthcare utilization in Taiwan. METHODS: The National Health Insurance Research Database supplied claim records of one million individuals from 1996 to 2007. Selected cases included patients aged >16 years. Certified rheumatologists diagnosed the patients in three or more visits and gave prescriptions for AS. Multivariate adjusted logistic regression analyses were used to calculate the influence of gender on cumulative healthcare utilization associated with AS. RESULTS: The study included 228 women and 636 men. After adjustment for potential confounding factors, men had more cumulative outpatient visits associated with AS (odds ratio, 1.59; 95% confidence interval, 1.13 -2.23; p = 0.008). Men also exhibited a trend for higher frequency of AS-related hospitalization (p = 0.054). CONCLUSION: Men are more likely to have high cumulative AS-associated healthcare utilization than women. Further investigation of the causal factors is warranted
