    Residual foreign body in the neck after trauma results in the delayed rupture of the common carotid and internal jugular vein: a case report

    INTRODUCTION: Trauma and foreign body residue occurring in different settings are common in the neck. Some small injuries go unrecognized, and vascular injuries caused by the sharp penetrating trauma of a foreign body are very dangerous. Without early diagnosis and treatment, foreign body residue remains a major cause of mortality. CASE PRESENTATION: A six-cm piece of wooden chopstick was not initially detected in the neck of a 24-year-old Chinese man presenting with a slight bleeding wound after a brawl accident. Three days later, the patient had an expanding neck hematoma and shortness of breath. Computed tomography revealed a dense shadow in the soft tissue of the left side of the patient’s neck, and surgical exploration found that a residual broken chopstick had resulted in a delayed rupture of the common carotid artery and internal jugular vein. CONCLUSION: A residual foreign body should be seriously considered after neck trauma because it can result in a lethal hemorrhage originating from a delayed rupture of blood vessels

    The experience of long-stay patients in a forensic psychiatric hospital in China: a qualitative study

    open access articleBackground Long stay in forensic psychiatric hospitals is common in patients who are defined as “not criminally responsible on account of mental disorder”. However, little is known about how these patients experience and perceive the long stay within these settings. The aim of this study is to explore the perception and needs of long-stay patients in forensic psychiatric hospitals in China. Methods In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 participants who had lived in the forensic psychiatry hospital for more than 8 years. We used thematic analysis strategies to analyse the qualitative data. Results Participants’ perceptions clustered seven themes: hopelessness, loneliness, worthlessness, low mood, sleep disturbances, lack of freedom, and lack of mental health intervention. Conclusions The views and opinions expressed by long-stay patients showed that psychological distress is prevailing in forensic psychiatric hospitals. Adequate and effective care and mental health interventions are recommended to be tailored for their special needs

    Antiviral activity and mechanism of action of arbidol against Hantaan virus infection

    Purpose: To investigate the activity and mechanism of action of arbidol against Hantaan virus (HTNV) activity by modulating inflammation via TLR-4 pathway.Methods: HUVEC cells infected with HTNV 76-118 were treated with serially diluted arbidol solutions at -2h (2 h before viral infection, pre-treatment mode), 0 h (at the same time as viral infection, simultaneous treatment mode) or 2 h (2 h after viral infection, post-treatment mode). The transcript levels of TLR4 were detected by semi-quantitative reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) at 6, 12, 18, and 24 h later. The levels of iNOS and TNF-α were examined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).Results: Pre-treatment with arbidol, rather than simultaneous treatment or  post-treatment, effectively inhibited up-regulation of cellular TLR4 expression (up to 40 ± 6.1 % inhibition) and activity of supernatant iNOS induced by HTNV  infection(up to 44.1 ± 9.4 % inhibition), as well as in a LPSstimulated inflammatory endothelial cell. Arbidol decreased the elevated TNF-α levels induced by LPSstimulation.Conclusion: These results are the first evidence that arbidol modulates viral PRRs signaling and its consequential inflammatory cytokine/chemokine response during hantavirus infection.Keywords: Hantavirus, Arbidol, Toll-like receptors, inducible nitric oxide synthase, Antiviral activity, Inflammatio

    The Effectiveness of Tepid Sponge Bath with 32oc and 37oc to Decrease Body Temperature at Toddler with Fever

    Introduction: Tepid sponge bath is a therapeutic bath by washing all around of the body with warm water to decrease body temperature. Warm water that used were 32oC (nail warm) and 37oC (warm). The aimed of this study was to compare the effectivity of tepid sponge bath with 32oC and 37oC warm water on decreasing body temperature at toddler with fever. Method: A quasy experimental pre post test design was used in this study. The population was toddler who had body temperature ≥38oC which treated in anggrek pediatric room dr. Iskak public hospital Tulungagung. There were 26 respondents recruited by using purposive sampling technique and divided into two group, each of 13 respondents received tepid sponge bath with 32oC and others received tepid sponge bath with 37oC warm water. The independent variable was tepid sponge bath and dependent variable was body temperature. Data were collected by using digital termometere and noted in respondent observation, then analyzed by using Paired t-Test and Mann Withney U-Test. Result: The result showed that there was an effectivity on decreasing body temperature by giving tepid sponge bath with 32oC and 37oC warm water with significance level p=0.000 and there was a difference decreasing body temperature among both of them with significance level p=0.016. Discussion: It can be concluded that tepid sponge bath with 37oC warm water was more effective than tepid sponge bath with 32oC warm water. Further studies should be observed the effectivity of tepid sponge bath with more specific age, fever character and more time and respondent

    Methane-supported nitrate removal from groundwater in a membrane biofilm reactor

    The discovery of denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidation (DAMO) has not only improved our understanding of global methane and nitrogen cycles, but also provided new technology options for removal of nitrate from nitrate-contaminated water. Previous studies have demonstrated DAMO organisms could remove nitrate and nitrite from wastewater under strictly anaerobically conditions. In the study, we investigate the feasibility of nitrate removal from groundwater, which contains dissolved oxygen in addition to nitrate. A membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR), inoculated with DAMO co-culture, was capable of treating synthetic groundwater containing highly contaminated nitrate (50  mg N/L) and oxygen (7-9 mg O2/L), with a maximum volumetric nitrate removal rate of 45 mg N/L-d. Accumulations of acetate and propionate were observed in some transient periods, indicating the possible involvement of acetate and propionate as intermediates in methane oxidation. The 16 S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing revealed that Candidatus Methylomirabilis, a known bacterial DAMO organism able to couple nitrite reduction with anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM), was the dominant population. No archaeal DAMO organisms that are capable of coupling nitrate to AOM were observed, however, considerable amount of denitrifiers were developed in this system. Based on known metabolisms of these microorganisms and a series of batch studies, it was assumed that methane was oxidized into volatile fatty acids (VFAs) under oxygen-limiting conditions, then the generated VFAs served as carbon sources for these heterotrophic denitrifiers to remove nitrate.     Superconducting Ti15Zr15Nb35Ta35 High-Entropy Alloy With Intermediate Electron-Phonon Coupling

    The body-centered cubic (BCC) Ti15Zr15Nb35Ta35 high-entropy alloy showed superconducting behavior at around 8 K. The electronic specific heat coefficient γ and the lattice specific heat coefficient β were determined to be γ = 9.3 ± 0.1 mJ/mol K2 and β = 0.28 ± 0.01 mJ/mol K4, respectively. It was found that the electronic specific heat Ces does follow the exponential behavior of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory. Nevertheless, the specific heat jump (ΔC/γTc) at the superconducting transition temperature which was determined to be 1.71 deviates appreciably from that for a weak electron-phonon coupling BCS superconductor. Within the framework of the strong-coupled theory, our analysis suggests that theTi15Zr15Nb35Ta35 HEA is an intermediate electron-phonon coupled BCS-type superconductor
