    Community Gardens: Giving Hope to Southeast Asian Refugees

    Get PDF
    Since 1975, over 1.3 million Southeast Asian refugees have resettled in the United States from the Southeast Asian nations of Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam (Office of Refugee Resettlement, 2014). Many Southeast Asian refugees fled their home countries after the Vietnam War to avoid political persecution. As a result of forced migration, Southeast Asian refugees experience high levels of psychological distress attributed to premigration trauma and postmigration. Stressors may include adjusting to a new culture, finding housing, establishing employment, financial hardship, learning a new language and the feeling of identity loss of their homeland. In considering these stressors, this study sought to understand how a lack of access to affordable healthy food may be impacting Southeast Asian refugees’ social, mental, and physical health. Using basic qualitative research, nine structured participant interviews were conducted. Findings suggest one way to alleviate some stress for refugees was to increase access to culturally congruent food. Additionally, increasing economic opportunities and transportation services were identified as critical to improving access to healthy food options. The theoretical framework that guided this study was resilience theory. This framework brought to light the hardship and stress experienced by refugees. I then used it to outline ways that community gardens may build individual resilience to overcome personal hardships through social support structures. The findings highlight the importance of resettling refugees in communities close to families to build individual resilience and the need for refugee resettlement practitioners to continue to offer resettlement support beyond initial arrival to the United States and until economic self-sufficiency is achieved. Additionally, four central themes emerged from individual stories of each participant’s perceptions of how food access impacts their social, mental, and physical health. The four themes were: (1) postmigration traumas create hardships among Hmong refugees, (2) poverty and physical and mental health disabilities impact food access, (3) food cultivation is deeply rooted in the Hmong culture, and (4) gardens build social communities and give hope. The study also uncovered two unexpected findings. The first was the strong cultural belief in natural healing using herbal medicine known as “tshuaj ntsuab Hmoob” or Hmong green medicine, and, secondly, the prevalent cultivation of Hmong herbal medicine plants in the gardens. For practitioners developing housing for resettled refugees, creating green space for refugees to cultivate their traditional green medicine is vital to Hmong refugees’ identity and culture. One way to provide such access would be to incorporate green space into resettlement housing arrangements so refugees may cultivate fruits and vegetables native to their home countries. Creating green spaces for refugees may help to preserve their rich culture and empower refugee communities to practice their cultural beliefs and traditions. Lastly, I conclude the study with a proposal for development of a nonprofit community garden called Garden of Hope. My vision for the Garden of Hope is to address findings of this study through program services, which may increase access to culturally congruent food and promote individual resilience through entrepreneurship. The goal is to teach refugees how to grow and market their organic fruits and vegetables to local restaurants and or sell them at local community farmers markets. Addressing postmigration stressors for Southeast Asian refugees through the Garden of Hope may improve individual economic mobility and uplift improvised communities through entrepreneurship

    AbstractThis research is motivated by air pollution that continues to occur in Tropodo Village,Krian. Village regulations on air pollution control that have been set are not running optimally. Village regulations concerning air pollution countermeasures that have not been implemented optimally. The purpose of this study was to identify the efforts of the villagegovernment in controlling the implementation of village regulations, the objective conditions of the community, the triggers behind the dysfunction of village regulations, and analyze the social construction of tofu factory owners and the community regarding villageregulations governing air pollution prevention. This research method uses a qualitativemethod with a case study approach and is studied using the social construction theory ofPeter L. Berger. Data obtained by means of observation, interviews, documentation and audiovisual. The results showed the externalization process by planting the use of plastic 2waste as fuel from the previous tofu factory owners. The objectivation process is demonstrated by understanding the characteristics of plastic waste which tend to have a positiveimpact on the Tropodo economic sector. The internalization process is indicated by theemergence of public awareness about meeting the needs of the economic sector which is farmore important than the health sector. Through this social construction, it can be seen thatVillage Regulation No.06/2014 has not been obeyed by the community, air pollution is stillan unresolved problem, and people with ARI in nearby health facilities are dominated bythe Tropodo community.Keywords: Air Pollution, Village Regulations, Plastic Wast

    Existence and uniqueness of limit cycles in a class of second order ODE's with inseparable mixed terms

    Full text link
    We prove a uniqueness result for limit cycles of the second order ODE x¨+x˙ϕ(x,x˙)+g(x)=0\ddot x + \dot x \phi(x,\dot x) + g(x) = 0. Under mild additional conditions, we show that such a limit cycle attracts every non-constant solution. As a special case, we prove limit cycle's uniqueness for an ODE studied in \cite{ETA} as a model of pedestrians' walk. This paper is an extension to equations with a non-linear g(x)g(x) of the results presented in \cite{S}

    On Compound Poisson Processes Arising in Change-Point Type Statistical Models as Limiting Likelihood Ratios

    Get PDF
    Different change-point type models encountered in statistical inference for stochastic processes give rise to different limiting likelihood ratio processes. In a previous paper of one of the authors it was established that one of these likelihood ratios, which is an exponential functional of a two-sided Poisson process driven by some parameter, can be approximated (for sufficiently small values of the parameter) by another one, which is an exponential functional of a two-sided Brownian motion. In this paper we consider yet another likelihood ratio, which is the exponent of a two-sided compound Poisson process driven by some parameter. We establish, that similarly to the Poisson type one, the compound Poisson type likelihood ratio can be approximated by the Brownian type one for sufficiently small values of the parameter. We equally discuss the asymptotics for large values of the parameter and illustrate the results by numerical simulations

    Magnetically tunable visible reflectivity utilizing the electron accumulation in indium-tin-oxide waveguide layer with subwavelength grating

    Get PDF
    Magnetic field detection was experimentally demonstrated utilizing the optical spectral change of Al-subwavelength grating (SWG) on indium-tin-oxide (ITO) layer. The Al-SWG was fabricated on the ITO layer by electron-beam lithography technique. The fabricated sample shows the peak in the reflection spectrum resulting from the excitation of guided-mode in ITO layer. Electron accumulation layer in ITO was induced by applying magnetic field and flowing current, and the accumulation layer decreased the reflection peak intensity. As the magnetic field of 172 mT was applied, the intensity decreasing reached to 3 % of that without magnetic field. The intensity returned to the original value before measurement when the magnetic field and the current disappeared. These results indicate that our structure can detect tens of mT magnetic field without degaussing

    Using Adaptive Structuraction Theory to Study the Implementation of CIM Systems: A case study of TFT-LCD Companies

    CIM (Computer Integrated Manufacturing) is like a strategic weapon that helps industries increase their capacity for competing. Case study by interviewing enterprise is the main technique applied in this research. Base on AST (Adaptive Structuraction Theory) introduced by multiple case analyses, in the process of implementing CIM the interaction between CIM and organization of two TFT-LCD industries whose business operation characteristics are different will be discussed. The research result can be treated as a reference for enterprises to perform their CIM system more effectively and promote their core competency. In the paper, some discoveries are found as follows: the enterprises that have higher degree of automation always pay more attention to the operation standard of manufacturing and system, and consider the correspondence between them for need of process automation. On the other hand, the enterprises that have lower degree of automation always pay more attention to the rationalization of production lines, the convenience of adjusting operation process after the system is implemented, division of labor among the related organizations and their responsibility as well. The reason why causes the difference is the former thinks both the system functions and information linking techniques are two most important key points in the CIM project, so the employee rate of the staff related with IT must be increased in the project organization

    The bifurcation phenomena in the resistive state of the narrow superconducting channels

    Full text link
    We have investigated the properties of the resistive state of the narrow superconducting channel of the length L/\xi=10.88 on the basis of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau model. We have demonstrated that the bifurcation points of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations cause a number of singularities of the current-voltage characteristic of the channel. We have analytically estimated the averaged voltage and the period of the oscillating solution for the relatively small currents. We have also found the range of currents where the system possesses the chaotic behavior
