    Empirical Modeling of Ducting Effects on a Mobile Microwave Link Over a Sea Surface

    In this paper, signal enhancement due to the ducts over a sea surface is experimentally investigated and modeled. The investigation is carried out through the study of air-to-ground mobile microwave links over a tropical ocean with low airborne altitudes (0.37 - 1.83 km) at C band (5.7 GHz). The distance-dependence of the ducting induced enhancement (with reference to the free-space propagation) is linearly modeled, and the physical variations of the ducts are found to be Gaussian distributed. Empirical ducting coefficients and parameters for the Gaussian function are estimated and provided for the prediction of the distance-dependent signal enhancement due to the ducts in similar scenarios

    Correlating Satellite Cloud Cover with Sky Cameras

    The role of clouds is manifold in understanding the various events in the atmosphere, and also in studying the radiative balance of the earth. The conventional manner of such cloud analysis is performed mainly via satellite images. However, because of its low temporal- and spatial- resolutions, ground-based sky cameras are now getting popular. In this paper, we study the relation between the cloud cover obtained from MODIS images, with the coverage obtained from ground-based sky cameras. This will help us to better understand cloud formation in the atmosphere - both from satellite images and ground-based observations.Comment: Published in Proc.     A FRACTURE-INDUCED ADHESIVE WEAR CRITERION AND ITS APPLICATION TO THE SIMULATION OF WEAR PROCESS OF THE POINT CONTACTS UNDER MIXED LUBRICATION CONDITION

    Adhesive wear is one of the four major wear mechanisms and very common in almost all macro-, micro- or nanotribosystems. In an adhesive wear process, tiny material fragments are pulled off from one sliding surface and adhered onto the counterpart. Later these fragments form loose particles or transfer between the contact surfaces. Because of the topographical and physicochemical property non-uniformity of engineering surfaces, adhesive wear happens heterogeneously on the loaded sliding surfaces, and it is also discontinuous during sliding or rolling motion owing to the damage accumulation and fracture occurred inside the subsurface layers. Taking account of these characteristics, a novel fracture-induced adhesive wear criterion has been proposed in this study in order to predict local wear of material in sliding. Moreover, the proposed wear criterion is applied to predicting wear particle formation and morphology evolution of mixed lubricated rough surfaces during reciprocating sliding, and the simulation results are compared with the ball-on-disk experimental measurements

    Zc(3900)Z_c(3900) as a DDˉD\bar{D}^* molecule from the pole counting rule

    A comprehensive study on the nature of the Zc(3900)Z_c(3900) resonant structure is carried out in this work. By constructing the pertinent effective Lagrangians and considering the important final-state-interaction effects, we first give a unified description to all the relevant experimental data available, including the J/ψπJ/\psi\pi and ππ\pi\pi invariant mass distributions from the e+eJ/ψππe^+e^-\to J/\psi\pi\pi process, the hcπh_c\pi distribution from e+ehcππe^+e^-\to h_c\pi\pi and also the DDˉD\bar D^{*} spectrum in the e+eDDˉπe^+e^-\to D\bar D^{*}\pi process. After fitting the unknown parameters to the previous data, we search the pole in the complex energy plane and find only one pole in the nearby energy region in different Riemann sheets. Therefore we conclude that Zc(3900)Z_c(3900) is of DDˉD\bar D^* molecular nature, according to the pole counting rule method~[Nucl.~Phys.~A543, 632 (1992); Phys.~Rev.~D 35,~1633 (1987)]. We emphasize that the conclusion based upon the pole counting method is not trivial, since both the DDˉD\bar D^{*} contact interactions and the explicit ZcZ_c exchanges are introduced in our analyses and they lead to the same conclusion.Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures.
