    Look, Listen and Learn - A Multimodal LSTM for Speaker Identification

    Speaker identification refers to the task of localizing the face of a person who has the same identity as the ongoing voice in a video. This task not only requires collective perception over both visual and auditory signals, the robustness to handle severe quality degradations and unconstrained content variations are also indispensable. In this paper, we describe a novel multimodal Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) architecture which seamlessly unifies both visual and auditory modalities from the beginning of each sequence input. The key idea is to extend the conventional LSTM by not only sharing weights across time steps, but also sharing weights across modalities. We show that modeling the temporal dependency across face and voice can significantly improve the robustness to content quality degradations and variations. We also found that our multimodal LSTM is robustness to distractors, namely the non-speaking identities. We applied our multimodal LSTM to The Big Bang Theory dataset and showed that our system outperforms the state-of-the-art systems in speaker identification with lower false alarm rate and higher recognition accuracy.Comment: The 30th AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AAAI-16

    An investigation of eating disorder behaviour as a means of avoidant coping with romantic stress for women high in self-evaluative salience

    Multiple factors contribute to the onset of eating disorders (EDs). Romantic stress is thought to be salient due to the importance of appearance in romantic attraction. Avoidance of stress has been specifically correlated to EDs. Avoidant coping is thought to potentiate effects of romantic stress, but only for individuals who base their self-worth on their appearance. This is the first study to investigate the association between avoidant coping style, romantic stress, basing self-worth on one\u27s appearance, and the impact of these factors on the outcome variables of ED symptom severity, ED attitudes, and body dissatisfaction. Three hundred female undergraduates completed an online questionnaire. As predicted, avoidant coping was positively correlated with ED attitudes, and increased self-evaluative salience and elevated romantic stress led to the highest levels of ED attitudes. Contrary to predictions, this non-clinical sample did not engage in disordered eating behaviour as a means of avoidant coping

    Accurate Single Stage Detector Using Recurrent Rolling Convolution

    Most of the recent successful methods in accurate object detection and localization used some variants of R-CNN style two stage Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) where plausible regions were proposed in the first stage then followed by a second stage for decision refinement. Despite the simplicity of training and the efficiency in deployment, the single stage detection methods have not been as competitive when evaluated in benchmarks consider mAP for high IoU thresholds. In this paper, we proposed a novel single stage end-to-end trainable object detection network to overcome this limitation. We achieved this by introducing Recurrent Rolling Convolution (RRC) architecture over multi-scale feature maps to construct object classifiers and bounding box regressors which are "deep in context". We evaluated our method in the challenging KITTI dataset which measures methods under IoU threshold of 0.7. We showed that with RRC, a single reduced VGG-16 based model already significantly outperformed all the previously published results. At the time this paper was written our models ranked the first in KITTI car detection (the hard level), the first in cyclist detection and the second in pedestrian detection. These results were not reached by the previous single stage methods. The code is publicly available.Comment: CVPR 201

    Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Breast Selfexamination among Nursing Students in Hong Kong: A Cross-sectional Study

    Breast cancer is a global public health concern. Currently, the crude incidence rate of breast cancer in Hong Kong is increasing. Although breast self-examination (BSE) is an effective screening method which able to reduce mortality rates, only a few women perform it monthly. As nurses play a significant role in promoting BSE, this study aims to study the knowledge, attitude, and practice of BSE for nursing students. A crosssectional design was employed, and 372 nursing students participated in this study. Results reveal that even BSE are compulsory in nursing curriculum, poor knowledge (“don’t know” 46.9%, incorrect 9.4%.), poor attitude (mean = 24.29, SD = 3.49) and limited practice (mean = 7.69, SD = 4.66) were found. Regression analysis support that knowledge and attitude predict practice of BSE. It is important to promote and build up the awareness of BSE to nursing students by enhancing their knowledge and attitude

    TRAPPC9 Mediates the Interaction between p150Glued and COPII Vesicles at the Target Membrane

    Background: The transport of endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-derived COPII vesicles toward the ER-Golgi intermediate compartment (ERGIC) requires cytoplasmic dynein and is dependent on microtubules. p150Glued, a subunit of dynactin, has been implicated in the transport of COPII vesicles via its interaction with COPII coat components Sec23 and Sec24. However, whether and how COPII vesicle tether, TRAPP (Transport protein particle), plays a role in the interaction between COPII vesicles and microtubules is currently unknown. Principle Findings: We address the functional relationship between COPII tether TRAPP and dynactin. Overexpressed TRAPP subunits interfered with microtubule architecture by competing p150Glued away from the MTOC. TRAPP subunit TRAPPC9 bound directly to p150Glued via the same carboxyl terminal domain of p150Glued that binds Sec23 and Sec24. TRAPPC9 also inhibited the interaction between p150Glued and Sec23/Sec24 both in vitro and in vivo, suggesting that TRAPPC9 serves to uncouple p150Glued from the COPII coat, and to relay the vesicle-dynactin interaction at the target membrane. Conclusions: These findings provide a new perspective on the function of TRAPP as an adaptor between the ERGIC membrane and dynactin. By preserving the connection between dynactin and the tethered and/or fused vesicles, TRAPP allows nascent ERGIC to continue the movement along the microtubules as they mature into the cis-Golgi

Although there has been a considerable amount of research on the association between screen viewing and sleep, most studies have focused on specific types of screen viewing devices such as televisions and computers. The present study investigated the duration w ith which currently prevalent screen viewing devices (including televisions, personal computers, mobile phones, and portable video devices) are viewed in relation to sleep duration, sleep quality, and daytime sleepiness among Hong Kong adolescents (N = 762). Television and computer viewing remain prevalent, but were not correlated with sleep variables. Mobile phone viewing was correlated with all sleep variables, while portable video device viewing was shown to be correlated only with daytime sleepiness. The results demonstrated a trend of increase in the prevalence and types of screen viewing and their effects on the sleep patterns of adolescents.Link_to_subscribed_fulltex
