Derivative spectrophotometric method for simultaneous determination of ezetimibe and simvastatin in combined tablets

    Get PDF
The introduced study portrays the development and validation of an effortless, speedy and selective first order derivative zero-crossing spectrophotometric method to estimate ezetimibe and simvastatin simultaneously in combined drug products over and above in the presence of ezetimibe alkaline degradation products. Ezetimibe and its alkaline degradates spectra showed zero-crossing point at 249 nm, so the amplitude at 249 nm could be used for calculating the concentration of simvastatin. While simvastatin and ezetimibe alkaline degradates spectra showed a zero-reading value at 261 nm, so ezetimibe could be determined by measuring the amplitude at 261 nm. Regression plots revealed good linear relationships in the concentration range 1-16 µg/mL with accuracy checked by conducting recovery studies; average recovery was 99.61 ± 1.183 and 100.47 ± 1.310 for ezetimibe and simvastatin, respectively. The suggested first derivative spectrophotometric method was successfully applied for the determination of the cited drugs in "Inegy 10/10, 10/20 and 10/40 tablets". Satisfactory results were obtained for the recovery of both drugs and were in good agreement with the labeled amounts.  Method validation was estimated according to USP guidelines

Forced degradation of gliquidone and development of validated stability-indicating HPLC and TLC methods

    Get PDF
Forced degradation studies of gliquidone were conducted under different stress conditions. Three degradates were observed upon using HPLC and TLC and elucidated by LC-MS and IR. HPLC method was performed on C18 column using methanol-water (85:15 v/v) pH 3.5 as a mobile phase with isocratic mode at 1 mL.min-1 and detection at 225 nm. HPLC analysis was applied in range of 0.5-20 µg.mL-1 (r =1) with limit of detection (LOD) 0.177 µg.mL-1. TLC method was based on the separation of gliquidone from degradation products on silica gel TLC F254 plates using chloroform-cyclohexaneglacial acetic acid (6:3:1v/v) as a developing system with relative retardation 1.15±0.01. Densitometric measurements were achieved in range of 2 -20 µg /band at 254 nm (r = 0.9999) with LOD of 0.26 µg /band. Least squares regression analysis was applied to provide mathematical estimates of the degree of linearity. The analysis revealed a linear calibration for HPLC where a binomial relationship for TLC. Stability testing and methods validation have been evaluated according to International Conference on Harmonization guidelines. Moreover, the proposed methods were applied for the analysis of tablets and the results obtained were statistically compared with those of pharmacopeial method revealing no significant difference about accuracy and precision

Impact of Nutritional Educational Program on the Nutritional Habits and Status among Older Adults at Qena City, Egypt

Background: The age-related changes of the gastrointestinal tract, availability of the food and the functional ability affect the nutritional intake among elderly people. Most of the diseases originate from malnutrition especially among the vulnerable group as older adults. Therefore, the aim of this study is to improve older adults' nutritional habits. The study followed a quesi experimental research design and was carried out in the Elderly Club at Qena City. Sample; One hundred and six older adults who fulfilled the inclusion criteria participated in this study and assigned randomly into fifty-three intervention group and fifty-three control group. Two tools were used to collect the data; Tool I Structured Interview Form and tool II Mini-Nutritional Assessment Scale. The results of this study revealed that there are no statistically significant differences of frequency of usual food consumed per week between pre-test and Posttest among the intervention or control group (P > 0.05). There are significance differences between pre-test and Posttest of food preparation method and the substances used in cooking among only the intervention group. It was concluded from the current study that the intervention improved the nutritional habits. Based on the study results, it will be useful implement the nutritional educational program at all older organizations which provide services to older adults such as elderly homes, elderly clubs, and hospitals in Egypt

Dengue fever in Morocco: result of surveillance during the year 2017 and first imported cases

Dengue is a significant mosquito-borne infection in humans, and its worldwide prevalence is rapidly increasing. The vector aedes albopictus has been revealed recently in the town of Rabat. Morocco established a program of active surveillance of dengue fever comprising many hospitals and laboratories across the kingdom. The purpose of this work is to describe the result of the surveillance of the dengue virus (DENV) infection during the year of 2017 among Moroccans and tourists who presented in our hospital with clinical signs of infection and to report the first confirmed positive cases of Dengue. From 20 December 2016 to 20 December 2017, 21 patients were hospitalized for suspicion of DENV infection. Half of them were returning from Côte d’Ivoire which is a popular tourist and business country for Moroccans and where an outbreak of DENV was confirmed on July 2017. Fever, headache, arthralgia-myalgia and malaise in addition to the notion of return from an endemic country justify in clinicians the demand for analysis of detection of dengue virus by RT-PCR.Dengue infection was confirmed in two patient both coming from Côte d’Ivoire, a Moroccan and an Ivorian who were staying in Abidjan during the period of the outbreak of 2017
