    Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome in a Child with Steroid Sensitive Nephrotic Syndrome

    Introduction: Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) was described in adults more than children. It was reported in cases of nephrotic syndrome which were mainly on immunosuppressant medicationsor had severe hypertension.Case report: We report the case of a 9-years old girl who presented with nephrotic syndrome and moderate hypertension. Nine days after the initiation of steroid therapy she developed disturbed level of consciousnessand generalized tonic clonic seizures. Her blood pressure was 145/90 mm Hg and she had normal serum creatinine and electrolytes levels. She was treated with furosemide and convulsions were controlled. After regainingconsciousness, the patient complained of loss of vision. Fundal  examination was normal. Magnetic resonant  imaging, axial FLAIR images and diffusion weighted imaging showed hyper-intensity signal in the parieto-occipital areas. Magnetic resonant arteriography and spectroscopy excluded ischemic insults and neoplastic process. She regained full consciousness and normal vision and was discharged from the ICU four days later. PRES was diagnosed based on the typical pattern of brainimaging and the reversibility of symptoms. .Conclusion: Nephrotic syndrome in children should be considered a risk factor for developing PRES even without the use of immunosuppressant agents or high doses of steroids

    Observation of the spin Peltier effect

    We report the observation of the spin Peltier effect (SPE) in the ferrimagnetic insulator Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG), i.e. a heat current generated by a spin current flowing through a Platinum (Pt)|YIG interface. The effect can be explained by the spin torque that transforms the spin current in the Pt into a magnon current in the YIG. Via magnon-phonon interactions the magnetic fluctuations modulate the phonon temperature that is detected by a thermopile close to the interface. By finite-element modelling we verify the reciprocity between the spin Peltier and spin Seebeck effect. The observed strong coupling between thermal magnons and phonons in YIG is attractive for nanoscale cooling techniques.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 4 pages supplementary information, 4 supplementary figure

    Improving the Representation and Conversion of Mathematical Formulae by Considering their Textual Context

    Mathematical formulae represent complex semantic information in a concise form. Especially in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, mathematical formulae are crucial to communicate information, e.g., in scientific papers, and to perform computations using computer algebra systems. Enabling computers to access the information encoded in mathematical formulae requires machine-readable formats that can represent both the presentation and content, i.e., the semantics, of formulae. Exchanging such information between systems additionally requires conversion methods for mathematical representation formats. We analyze how the semantic enrichment of formulae improves the format conversion process and show that considering the textual context of formulae reduces the error rate of such conversions. Our main contributions are: (1) providing an openly available benchmark dataset for the mathematical format conversion task consisting of a newly created test collection, an extensive, manually curated gold standard and task-specific evaluation metrics; (2) performing a quantitative evaluation of state-of-the-art tools for mathematical format conversions; (3) presenting a new approach that considers the textual context of formulae to reduce the error rate for mathematical format conversions. Our benchmark dataset facilitates future research on mathematical format conversions as well as research on many problems in mathematical information retrieval. Because we annotated and linked all components of formulae, e.g., identifiers, operators and other entities, to Wikidata entries, the gold standard can, for instance, be used to train methods for formula concept discovery and recognition. Such methods can then be applied to improve mathematical information retrieval systems, e.g., for semantic formula search, recommendation of mathematical content, or detection of mathematical plagiarism.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

    Control of spin current by a magnetic YIG substrate in NiFe/Al nonlocal spin valves

    We study the effect of a magnetic insulator [yttrium iron garnet (YIG)] substrate on the spin-transport properties of Ni80Fe20/Al nonlocal spin valve (NLSV) devices. The NLSV signal on the YIG substrate is about two to three times lower than that on a nonmagnetic SiO2 substrate, indicating that a significant fraction of the spin current is absorbed at the Al/YIG interface. By measuring the NLSV signal for varying injector-to-detector distances and using a three-dimensional spin-transport model that takes spin-current absorption at the Al/YIG interface into account, we obtain an effective spin-mixing conductance G(up arrow down arrow) similar or equal to 5-8 x 10(13) Omega(-1) m(-2). We also observe a small, but clear, modulation of the NLSV signal when rotating the YIG magnetization direction with respect to the fixed spin polarization of the spin accumulation in the Al. Spin relaxation due to thermal magnons or roughness of the YIG surface may be responsible for the observed small modulation of the NLSV signal.</p

    Prediction of adverse neonatal outcome at admission for early-onset preeclampsia with severe features

    Preeclampsia remains the leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. Consequently, research has focused on validating tools to predict maternal outcomes regarding clinical and biochemical features from the maternal compartment. However, preeclampsia also leads to neonatal complications due to placental insufficiency and prematurity, being the early-onset type associated with the poorest outcome. Hence, it is imperative to study whether these existing tools can predict adverse neonatal outcome.To assess the predictive value for adverse neonatal outcome of Doppler ultrasound, angiogenic factors and multi-parametric risk-score models in women with early-onset severe preeclampsia.This is a prospective cohort study of consecutive singleton pregnancies complicated by early-onset (developed before 34 week's gestation) severe preeclampsia.63 women with early-onset severe preeclampsia, 18 (28.6%) presented an adverse neonatal outcome. Placental growth factor (PlGF) showed the best discrimination between neonatal outcomes among angiogenic factors. PREP-L score is a multi-parametric risk-score for the prediction of complications in early-onset preeclampsia which includes maternal characteristics and clinical and analytical data obtained at admission. Good predictive values for the prediction of neonatal complications were found with the combination of PREP-L score with advanced Doppler (AUC ROC 0.9 95% CI 0.82-0.98]) and with PlGF levels (AUC ROC 0.91 [95% CI 0.84-0.98]).The combination of maternal risk scoring (PREP-L score) with angiogenic factors or fetal Doppler ultrasound at the time of diagnosis of early-onset preeclampsia with severe features performs well in predicting adverse neonatal outcome.Copyright © 2023 International Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy.     Some entanglement features of three-atoms Tavis-Cummings model: Cooperative case

    In this paper we consider a system of identical three two-level atoms interacting at resonance with a single-mode of the quantized field in a lossless cavity. The initial cavity field is prepared in the coherent state while the atoms are taken initially to be either in the uppermost excited state "eee>|eee>" or The GHZ\textmd{GHZ}-state or the W\textmd{W}-state. For this system we investigate different kinds of atomic inversion and entanglement, which arise between the different parts of the system due to the interaction. Also the relationship, between entanglement and some other nonclassical effects in the statistical properties, such as collapses and revivals in the atomic inversion where superharmonic effects appear, is discussed. The QQ-functions for different cases are discussed. Most remarkably it is found that the GHZ\textmd{GHZ}-state is more robust against energy losses, showing almost coherent trapping and Schr\"odinger-cat states can not be produced from such state. Also the entanglement of GHZ\textmd{GHZ}-state is more robust than the W\textmd{W}-state. Another interesting feature found is that the state which has no pairwise entanglement initially will have a much improvement of such pairwise entanglement through the evolution. Sudden death and sudden revival of atoms-pairwise entanglement are produced with the W\textmd{W}-state.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure
