    This publication describes techniques directed to improved compression algorithms that reduce the size of look-up tables used to store pixel burn-in compensation parameters that are used by Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) display burn-in compensation algorithms. The improved compression algorithms include an x-y mapping compression algorithm and a line fitting parameters compression algorithm. The improved compression algorithms simplify logic, save memory space, conserve power, and/or reduce latency relative to many common compression techniques

    Exploring American Indian Students’ Problem-Solving Propensity in the Context of Culturally Relevant STEM Topics

    This study presents an out-of-school problem-solving lesson we designed for American Indian students using a culturally relevant STEM topic. The lesson was titled “Shelter Design for Severe Weather Conditions.” This shelter design lesson was developed based on an engineering design allowing us to integrate STEM topics within a traditional indigenous house-building context. This problem context was used to encourage students to apply their prior knowledge, experience, and community/cultural practice to solve problems. We implemented the lesson at a summer program on an American Indian reservation. Using the lesson, this study explores how American Indian students use cultural knowledge and experience to solve a STEM problem. We collected student data through pre- and post-STEM content knowledge tests, drawings and explanations of shelter models on the students’ group worksheets, and classroom observations. We used interpretive and inductive methods to analyze the data. This study demonstrates that our culturally relevant, STEM problem-solving lesson helped the American Indian students solve a complex, real-world problem. This study examines how students’ prior experiences and cultural knowledge affect their problem-solving strategies. Our findings have implications for further research on designing problem-solving lessons with culturally relevant STEM topics for students from historically marginalized populations

    Green Apparel Advertising: Does It Need to Move toward a Product-led Approach?

    Using Banerjee et al.\u27s (1995) green advertising criteria as a framework, this study examines how Green Apparel Advertising Potency (GAAP) can be achieved. Possibilities emerge from extensive content analysis of leading marketing journals (1996 to 2016) and empirical analyses of four main attributes from various ad types: environment, product, lifestyle, and humanism. Environment attribute includes environmental benefit and nature harmony. Product attribute includes apparel quality, apparel uniqueness, and well-being benefit. Lifestyle attribute includes lifestyle compatibility, meaningfulness, and self-discovery. Finally, humanism attribute includes ethicality, humanitarian benefit, compassionate love, and connection to others. We propose a consumer response framework for Green Apparel Advertising Potency (GAAP) to outline essential elements of effective green ads. Using eight different types of green apparel ads, these elements are analyzed to develop a decision tree predictive model that determines optimum combinations of attributes. The findings indicate that the functional product attribute of apparel quality is the primary factor that can elevate Green Apparel Advertising Potency (GAAP)

    Study of the Top-quark Pair Production in Association with a Bottom-quark Pair from Fast Simulations at the LHC

    A large number of top quarks will be produced at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for Run II period. This will allow us to measure the rare processes from the top sector in great details. We present the study of the top-quark pair production in association with a bottom-quark pair (ttbb) from fast simulations for the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment. The differential distributions of ttbb are compared with the top-quark pair production with two additional jets (ttjj) and with the production in association with the Higgs (ttH), where the Higgs decays to a bottom-quark pair. The significances of ttbb process in the dileptonic and semileptonic decay mode are calculated with the data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 10 fb-1, which is foreseen to be collected in the early Run II period. This study will be an important input in searching for new physics beyond the standard model as well as in searching for ttH process where the Yukawa coupling with the top quark can be directly measured.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figure

    MULTI-K: accurate classification of microarray subtypes using ensemble k-means clustering

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Uncovering subtypes of disease from microarray samples has important clinical implications such as survival time and sensitivity of individual patients to specific therapies. Unsupervised clustering methods have been used to classify this type of data. However, most existing methods focus on clusters with compact shapes and do not reflect the geometric complexity of the high dimensional microarray clusters, which limits their performance.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We present a cluster-number-based ensemble clustering algorithm, called <it>MULTI-K</it>, for microarray sample classification, which demonstrates remarkable accuracy. The method amalgamates multiple <it>k</it>-means runs by varying the number of clusters and identifies clusters that manifest the most robust co-memberships of elements. In addition to the original algorithm, we newly devised the <it>entropy-plot </it>to control the separation of singletons or small clusters. MULTI-K, unlike the simple <it>k</it>-means or other widely used methods, was able to capture clusters with complex and high-dimensional structures accurately. MULTI-K outperformed other methods including a recently developed ensemble clustering algorithm in tests with five simulated and eight real gene-expression data sets.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The geometric complexity of clusters should be taken into account for accurate classification of microarray data, and ensemble clustering applied to the number of clusters tackles the problem very well. The C++ code and the data sets tested are available from the authors.</p

    Origin of the increased velocities of domain wall motions in soft magnetic thin-film nanostripes beyond the velocity-breakdown regime

    It is known that oscillatory domain-wall (DW) motions in soft magnetic thin-film nanostripes above the Walker critical field lead to a remarkable reduction in the average DW velocities. In a much-higher-field region beyond the velocity-breakdown regime, however, the DW velocities have been found to increase in response to a further increase of the applied field. We report on the physical origin and detailed mechanism of this unexpected behavior. We associate the mechanism with the serial dynamic processes of the nucleation of vortex-antivortex (V-AV) pairs inside the stripe or at its edges, the non-linear gyrotropic motions of Vs and AVs, and their annihilation process. The present results imply that a two-dimensional soliton model is required for adequate interpretation of DW motions in the linear- and oscillatory-DW-motion regimes as well as in the beyond-velocity-breakdown regime.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figure
