Automobile ride quality experiments correlated to iso-weighted criteria
As part of an overall study to evaluate the usefulness of ride quality criteria for the design of improved ground transportation systems an experiment was conducted involving subjective and objective measurement of ride vibrations found in an automobile riding over roadways of various roughness. Correlation of the results led to some very significant relationships between passenger rating and ride accelerations. The latter were collapsed using a frequency-weighted root mean square measure of the random vibration. The results suggest the form of a design criterion giving the relationship between ride vibration and acceptable automobile ride quality. Further the ride criterion is expressed in terms that relate to rides with which most people are familiar. The design of the experiment, the ride vibration data acquisition, the concept of frequency weighting and the correlations found between subjective and objective measurements are presented
Iron line profiles including emission from within the innermost stable orbit of a black hole accretion disc
Reynolds & Begelman (1997) have recently proposed a model in which the broad
and extremely redshifted iron line seen during a deep minimum of the light
curve of the Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG-6-30-15 originates from matter spiralling
into a Schwarzschild black hole, contrary to previous claims that the black
hole may be spinning rapidly (Iwasawa et al 1996; Dabrowski et al 1997). Here
we calculate in detail the X-ray spectrum produced by their model using the
full reflected continuum emission, including absorption features. This
calculation takes into account the doppler and relativistic effects. For the
range of parameters we consider, we find that the spectrum should show a large
photoelectric absorption edge of iron, which is not seen in the data. The
absorption edge is a consequence of the line emitting matter within the
innermost stable orbit being highly ionized, and is largely independent of the
parameters chosen for their model. If we restrict our attention to the 3-10 keV
band we may effectively remove this absorption edge by fitting a steeper power
law, but this results in a significant underprediction of the 0.4-0.5 keV flux.
We conclude that the data on MCG-6-30-15 are more consistent with the Kerr than

A control system formulation of the mechanism that controls the secretions of serum group hormone in humans during sleep
Plasma growth hormone concentrations during sleep were determined experimentally. An elevated level of plasma growth hormone was observed during the initial phase of sleep and remained elevated for approximately 3 hr before returning to the steady-state level. Moreover, subsequent to a prolonged interruption of sleep, of the order of 2-3 hr, an elevated level of plasma growth hormone was again observed during the initial phase of resumed sleep. An implementation of a reference symbol approach to generic modulation in fading channels
As mobile satellite communications systems evolve over the next decade, they will have to adapt to a changing tradeoff between bandwidth and power. This paper presents a flexible approach to digital modulation and coding that will accommodate both wideband and narrowband schemes. This architecture could be the basis for a family of modems, each satisfying a specific power and bandwidth constraint, yet all having a large number of common signal processing blocks. The implementation of this generic approach, with general purpose digital processors for transmission of 4.8 kilobits per sec. digitally encoded speech, is described
Subarcsecond Imaging of the NGC 6334 I(N) Protocluster: Two Dozen Compact Sources and a Massive Disk Candidate
Using the SMA and VLA, we have imaged the massive protocluster NGC6334I(N) at
high angular resolution (0.5"~650AU) from 6cm to 0.87mm, detecting 18 new
compact continuum sources. Three of the new sources are coincident with
previously-identified water masers. Together with the previously-known sources,
these data bring the number of likely protocluster members to 25 for a
protostellar density of ~700 pc^-3. Our preliminary measurement of the
Q-parameter of the minimum spanning tree is 0.82 -- close to the value for a
uniform volume distribution. All of the (nine) sources with detections at
multiple frequencies have SEDs consistent with dust emission, and two (SMA1b
and SMA4) also have long wavelength emission consistent with a central
hypercompact HII region. Thermal spectral line emission, including CH3CN, is
detected in six sources: LTE model fitting of CH3CN(J=12-11) yields
temperatures of 72-373K, confirming the presence of multiple hot cores. The
fitted LSR velocities range from -3.3 to -7.0 km/s, with an unbiased mean
square deviation of 2.05 km/s, implying a dynamical mass of 410+-260 Msun for
the protocluster. From analysis of a wide range of hot core molecules, the
kinematics of SMA1b are consistent with a rotating, infalling Keplerian disk of
diameter 800AU and enclosed mass of 10-30 Msun that is perpendicular (within 1
degree) to the large-scale bipolar outflow axis. A companion to SMA1b at a
projected separation of 0.45" (590AU; SMA1d), which shows no evidence of
spectral line emission, is also confirmed. Finally, we detect one 218.440GHz

Correlation of creep rate with microstructural changes during high temperature creep
Creep tests were conducted on Haynes 188 cobalt-base alloy and alpha titanium. The tests on Haynes 188 were conducted at 1600 F and 1800 F for stresses from 3 to 20 ksi, and the as-received, mill-annealed results were compared to specimens given 5%, 10%, and 15% room temperature prestrains and then annealed one hour at 1800 F. The tests on alpha titanium were performed at 7,250 and 10,000 psi at 500 C. One creep test was done at 527 C and 10,000 psi to provide information on kinetics. Results for annealed titanium were compared to specimens given 10% and 20% room temperature prestrains followed by 100 hours recovery at 550 C. Electron microscopy was used to relate dislocation and precipitate structure to the creep behavior of the two materials. The results on Haynes 188 alloy reveal that the time to reach 0.5% creep strain at 1600 F increases with increasing prestrain for exposure times less than 1,000 hours, the increase at 15% prestrain being more than a factor of ten
The Polarized Spectrum of Apm 08279+5255
We report the discovery of significant linear polarization (p > 1%) in the
hyperluminous z=3.87 BALQSO APM~08279+5255. The polarization spectrum is
complex, with properties similar to those of other, lower redshift but more
highly polarized BALQSOs. The resonance emission lines are unpolarized while
the absorption troughs show polarization similar to or higher than the
continuum. In particular, an apparent increase of polarization in the trough
covering 1000-1030 angstroms (rest) supports the interpretation of this feature
as a broad absorption component associated with OVI/Ly_beta local to the QSO,
as opposed to an intervening damped Ly_alpha absorption system.
The elevated polarization in some of the absorption features implies that we
view the scattered (polarized) spectrum through a sightline with less absorbing
material than the direct spectrum. Therefore, the complex structure of the
polarization spectrum in this brilliant lensed BALQSO suggests that it will be
an important laboratory for studying the structure of QSOs at high redshift.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure. Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical

High fidelity sorting of remarkably similar components via metal-mediated assembly.
Subtle differences in ligand coordination angle and rigidity lead to high fidelity sorting between individual components displaying identical coordination motifs upon metal-mediated self-assembly. Narcissistic self-sorting can be achieved between highly similar ligands that vary minimally in rigidity and internal coordination angle upon combination with Fe(ii) ions and 2-formylpyridine. Selective, sequential cage formation can be precisely controlled in a single flask from a mix of three different core ligands (and 33 total components) differing only in the hybridization of one group that is uninvolved in the metal coordination process
A model for the screen printing of Newtonian fluids
A preliminary investigation into aspects of the off-contact screen-printing process is presented. A mathematical model for the printing of a thin film of Newtonian fluid is proposed, in which the screen is modelled as a permeable membrane, and the entire region above and below the screen is flooded. By drawing upon widely used industrial circuit printing practices, the distinguished limit of greatest interest to this industry is identified. Numerical and asymptotic solutions of this distinguished limit are presented that reproduce many of the features observed in industrial screen-printing
Natural control of the mosquito population via Odonata and Toxorhynchites
The main impact of mosquito pests is the transmission of many dangerous diseases and death. Hence, the reduction of their population by the use of a natural control method is a primary objective of this research. This mosquito reduction method utilises different species of predators (Odonata) and (Toxorhynchites) to substantially improve the environment. The frequency of capturing the pest mosquitoes by the predators is determined using a Pascal distribution, whilst insect mortality is modelled using a Weibull distribution. The results from the model show that by using insect predators, a significant reduction of the mosquito population is possible in less than eighty days
