A Caratheodory theorem for the bidisk via Hilbert space methods
If \ph is an analytic function bounded by 1 on the bidisk \D^2 and
\tau\in\tb is a point at which \ph has an angular gradient
\nabla\ph(\tau) then \nabla\ph(\la) \to \nabla\ph(\tau) as \la\to\tau
nontangentially in \D^2. This is an analog for the bidisk of a classical
theorem of Carath\'eodory for the disk.
For \ph as above, if \tau\in\tb is such that the of
(1-|\ph(\la)|)/(1-\|\la\|) as \la\to\tau is finite then the directional

Operator monotone functions and L\"owner functions of several variables
We prove generalizations of L\"owner's results on matrix monotone functions
to several variables. We give a characterization of when a function of
variables is locally monotone on -tuples of commuting self-adjoint
-by- matrices. We prove a generalization to several variables of
Nevanlinna's theorem describing analytic functions that map the upper
half-plane to itself and satisfy a growth condition. We use this to
characterize all rational functions of two variables that are operator
monotone

Comparing Infrared Star-Formation Rate Indicators with Optically-Derived Quantities
We examine the UV reprocessing efficiencies of warm dust and polycyclic
aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) through an analysis of the mid- and far-infrared
surface luminosity densities of 85 nearby H-selected star-forming
galaxies detected by the volume-limited KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey
(KISS). Because H selection is not biased toward continuum-bright
objects, the KISS sample spans a wide range in stellar masses
(-), as well as H luminosity
(-), mid-infrared 8.0m luminosity
(-), and [Bw-R] color (-.1-2.2). We find that
mid-infrared polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission in the Spitzer IRAC
8.0m band correlates with star formation, and that the efficiency with
which galaxies reprocess UV energy into PAH emission depends on metallicity. We
also find that the relationship between far-infrared luminosity in the Spitzer
MIPS 24m band pass and H-measured star-formation rate varies from
galaxy to galaxy within our sample; we do not observe a metallicity dependence
in this relationship. We use optical colors and established mass-to-light
relationships to determine stellar masses for the KISS galaxies; we compare
these masses to those of nearby galaxies as a confirmation that the
volume-limited nature of KISS avoids strong biases. We also examine the
relationship between IRAC 3.6m luminosity and galaxy stellar mass, and
find a color-dependent correlation between the two.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figure

Electron beam induced damage in PECVD Si3N4 and SiO2 films on InP
Phosphorus rich plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) of silicon nitride and silicon dioxide films on n-type indium phosphide (InP) substrates were exposed to electron beam irradiation in the 5 to 40 keV range for the purpose of characterizing the damage induced in the dielectic. The electron beam exposure was on the range of 10(exp -7) to 10(exp -3) C/sq cm. The damage to the devices was characterized by capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements of the metal insulator semiconductor (MIS) capacitors. These results were compared to results obtained for radiation damage of thermal silicon dioxide on silicon (Si) MOS capacitors with similar exposures. The radiation induced damage in the PECVD silicon nitride films on InP was successfully annealed out in an hydrogen/nitrogen (H2/N2) ambient at 400 C for 15 min. The PECVD silicon dioxide films on InP had the least radiation damage, while the thermal silicon dioxide films on Si had the most radiation damage
Population Studies. XIII. A New Analysis of the Bidelman-MacConnell "Weak-Metal" Stars - Confirmation of Metal-Poor Stars in the Thick Disk of the Galaxy
A new set of very high signal-to-noise (S/N > 100/1), medium-resolution
(R~3000) optical spectra have been obtained for 302 of the candidate
"weak-metal" stars selected by Bidelman & MacConnell. We use these data to
calibrate the recently developed generalization of the SEGUE Stellar Parameter
Pipeline, and obtain estimates of the atmospheric parameters (Teff, log g , and
[Fe/H]) for these non-SDSS/SEGUE data; we also obtain estimates of [C/Fe]. The
new abundance measurements are shown to be consistent with available
high-resolution spectroscopic determinations, and represent a substantial
improvement over the accuracies obtained from the previous photometric
estimates reported in Paper I of this series. The apparent offset in the
photometric abundances of the giants in this sample noted by several authors is
confirmed by our new spectroscopy; no such effect is found for the dwarfs. The
presence of a metal-weak thick-disk (MWTD) population is clearly supported by
these new abundance data. Some 25% of the stars with metallicities -1.8 <
[Fe/H] <= -0.8 exhibit orbital eccentricities e < 0.4, yet are clearly
separated from members of the inner-halo population with similar metallicities
by their location in a Lindblad energy vs. angular momentum diagram. A
comparison is made with recent results for a similar-size sample of RAVE stars
from Ruchti et al. We conclude, based on both of these samples, that the MWTD
is real, and must be accounted for in discussions of the formation and

MR230: Weight Tables for Tree and Shrub Species in Maine
Some biomass data on the components of tree and shrub species were collected nearly every summer from 1963 through 1978 for the express purpose of relating fresh and dry weight to the commonly measured physical dimensions of height and diameter at breast height. The first opportunity to conduct a biomass inventory occurred in 1974 in conjunction with a volume inventory of the Public Lots in Maine. In order to include all woody vegetation at least 1.0\u27 (30 cm) in height it was decided to measure all trees 1.0 (2.5 cm) and larger on a variable point sample and to measure the smaller trees and shrubs on a small fixed plot. In 1978 all of the biomass data in the files were compiled by components within species and three new sets of equations were prepared for each species relating fresh and dry weight by component, aboveground portion and the complete tree to diameter at breast height, and to height for the small saplings.
