The calculation of neutron capture gamma-ray yields for space shielding applications

    Get PDF
The application of nuclear models to the calculation of neutron capture and inelastic scattering gamma yields is discussed. The gamma ray cascade model describes the cascade process in terms of parameters which either: (1) embody statistical assumptions regarding electric and magnetic multipole transition strengths, level densities, and spin and parity distributions or (2) are fixed by experiment such as measured energies, spin and parity values, and transition probabilities for low lying states

The Iron Catalyzed Reaction between Nitrosyl Disulfonate and Hydroxylamine Monosulfonate Ions

    Get PDF
Potassium nitrosyl disulfonate, K2NO(SO3)2, is noteworthy because the solid salt is orange in color and diamagnetic while its neutral aqueous solutions are purple in color and paramagnetic. These neutral solutions hydrolyze slowly to form N2O and hydroxylamine sulfonates; on the addition of acid the rate of hydrolysis is markedly increased. The mechanism of the hydrolytic reaction is unexpectedly complex as was found by Murib and Ritter [1] and, independently, by us. In order to obtain a more comprehensive picture of the mechanism of the hydrolytic reaction we have explored additional reactions which may play a part in the hydrolysis

Nondestructive assessment of penetration of electron-beam welds

Empirical method correlates penetration of an electron-beam weld with external measurements of the weld. Empirical polygon accurately confirms full-penetration welds while a second, larger polygon provides for penetration of welds near the tip

    Repetition

Artist Statement My work is about memory, and my awareness of the repetition of large and small events in my life. In my paintings, drawings, and mixed media I create rhythmic patterns with images and colors to imply a sense of recurrence. I often repeat imagery such as paper dolls or geometric and organic shapes in my work. I choose and repeat shapes and colors that remind me of events in my childhood and in my life as an adult. I see these multiple images as symbolic self-portraits which prompt memories of recurring events, such as waking up each morning or remaking a mistake or running into an old friend. By incorporating personally familiar and repeated imagery, I want to trigger a déjà vu experience. I want the presentation of my memories to evoke the same in the viewer

The Pauper--Short-Changed at the Jury Box

Fear of governmental domination prompted the founders of the United States to restrict governmental interference with individual liberties. Indeed, the Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution to prohibit tampering with preferred freedoms. One such prohibition is that no citizen can be deprived of his life, liberty or property solely upon governmental accusations. Such deprivation can follow only after determination of guilt by a jury of the individual\u27s peers. However, West Virginia statutorily denies paupers this fundamental right to a trial by their peers. This denial constitutes an invidious discrimination violative of the equal protection clause of the Constitution

An interdisciplinary study of the estuarine and coastal oceanography of Block Island Sound and adjacent New York coastal waters

    Get PDF
The author has identified the following significant results. Photo-optical additive color quantitative measurements were made of ERTS-1 reprocessed positives of New York Bight and Block Island Sound. Regression of these data on almost simultaneous ship sample data of water's physical, chemical, biological, and optical properties showed that ERTS bands 5 and 6 can be used to predict the absolute value of the total number of particles and bands 4 and 5 to predict the relative extinction coefficient in New York Bight. Water masses and mixing patterns in Block Island Sound heretofore considered transient were found to be persistent phenomena requiring revision of existing mathematical and hydraulic models

Effects of Sexualized Images in Media on Attitudes Toward Public Breastfeeding

    Get PDF
Although breastfeeding is known to promote both physical and emotional health in both infant and mother, many women are hesitant to breastfeed in public due to perceived attitudes toward public breastfeeding. This research explores the relationship between frequent exposure to sexuality in mass media and people\u27s positions regarding breastfeeding. It was hypothesized that sexualized portrayals of the female body perpetuated in mass media would negatively impact individuals’ attitudes toward breastfeeding. No significant correlation was found between media exposure and negative attitude toward public breastfeeding. However, a few interesting results were observed. Individuals who responded positively to sexual media were more likely to associate female breasts with sex, which in turn influenced perceptions of public breastfeeding. Differences between male and female respondents were also reported. Findings are supported by and contribute to numerous other studies examining individual and societal perceptions regarding breastfeeding. Discussion suggests opportunities such as building awareness of and familiarity with breastfeeding, in order to decrease negative perceptions, and to promote confidence among women in their maternal choices, ultimately increasing rates of breastfeeding. The implications, as well as limitations, of the study were also discussed
