    Japanese companies’ investment strategies in Poland (review and prospects)

    Yoshito Okada rozpoczyna od przedstawienia aktualnego stanu gospodarek Japonii i Polski i ich pozycji konkurencyjnej na światowych rynkach. Zwraca między innymi uwagę na wyraźne osłabienie konkurencyjności i innowacyjności japońskiej branży elektroniki użytkowej. Z kolei, w opisie gospodarki polskiej na czoło wysuwają się spostrzeżenia, że znajduje się ona obecnie w fazie przejściowej − od gospodarki o średnim poziomie dochodów do gospodarki kraju wysoko rozwiniętego. Aby to przejście faktycznie nastąpiło, dalszy rozwój nie może obejmować jedynie przemysłu przetwórczego, ale przede wszystkim opierać się na implementacji nowoczesnych technologii. Jest to wyzwanie szczególnie istotne w warunkach zmniejszającej się liczby ludności (spadek liczby urodzeń, emigracja zarobkowa) i „starzenia się” społeczeństwa. Jeśli Polska nie sprosta tym oczekiwaniom, może wpaść w pułapkę pozostania w grupie państw o średnich dochodach, jak stało się to w przypadku niektórych krajów Azji Południowo-Wschodniej. W drugiej części artykułu autor analizuje ewolucję japońskiej strategii inwestowania w naszym kraju. Wspomina, że jeszcze przed przystąpieniem Polski do UE wiele japońskich firm zdecydowało się wybudować tu swoje fabryki (inwestycje typu „green field”), a powstała w ten sposób baza produkcyjna miała stać się przyczółkiem eksportowym do krajów Europy Zachodniej lub Rosji/WNP. Taka polityka znalazła uzasadnienie w niskich kosztach siły roboczej i ogromnych zachętach inwestycyjnych ze strony polskiego państwa. Jakkolwiek rozwój w oparciu o znaczące środki publiczne i niskie koszty pracy jest właściwy dla krajów rozwijających się, stopniowo przestał być adekwatny wraz ze wzrostem jakości życia i towarzyszącym mu wzrostem gospodarczym. Bezpośrednia zmiana strategii inwestycji japońskich w Polsce wiązała się z trzema zjawiskami: (1) wejściem Polski do UE; (2) upadkiem Banku Lehman Brothers i pęknięciem spekulacyjnej bańki wzrostu; (3) upowszechnieniem telewizorów z płaskim ekranem i pojawieniem się koreańskich konkurentów. W czasie globalnego kryzysu ekonomicznego w 2009 r. Polska okazała się jedynym europejskim krajem, który odnotował dodatni wzrost gospodarczy. Ten ostatni fakt dopełnił zmiany w postrzeganiu naszego kraju z tranzytowego na docelowy, jeśli chodzi o japońskie strategie inwestycyjne. Zdaniem Y. Okady, w obecnej sytuacji korzyści ekonomiczne mogą odnieść obie strony, a podwyższenie poziomu technologicznego polskiej gospodarki może z powodzeniem dokonać się z udziałem strony japońskiej. Jest to wniosek z rozważań zawartych w artykule. Oryginalność podejścia polega na wskazaniu, iż współpraca między naszymi krajami to nie tylko duże japońskie BIZ (bezpośrednie inwestycje zagraniczne) w Specjalnych Strefach Ekonomicznych, lecz przede wszystkim kontakty biznesowe i przepływ innowacyjnych technologii między małymi i średnimi przedsiębiorstwami z obu stron.     Mechanical Characteristics of Cast Ti Fiber-Reinforced Mg Composite

    Tensile strength and elongation of cast magnesium reinforced with titanium fiber were measured by tensile test. The pull-out test of a titanium rod partially embedded in a magnesium matrix was performed to evaluate interfacial bonding strength between magnesium and titanium. It was found that when the fiber volume fraction was changed from 1% to 14%, the tensile strength was improved with increase of volume fraction, while the improvement of elongation tended to be restrained beyond the volume fraction of 10%. The interfacial strength was revealed to be strong, and this was substantiated by the scanning electron microscopy showing an excellent wettability between the titanium fiber and the magnesium matrix

    Consistent map building in petrochemical complexes for firefighter robots using SLAM based on GPS and LIDAR

    The objective of this study was to achieve simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) of firefighter robots for petrochemical complexes. Consistency of the SLAM map is important because human operators compare the map with aerial images and identify target positions on the map. The global positioning system (GPS) enables increased consistency. Therefore, this paper describes two Rao-Blackwellized particle filters (RBPFs) based on GPS and light detection and ranging (LIDAR) as SLAM solutions. Fast-SLAM 1.0 and Fast-SLAM 2.0 were used in grid maps for RBPFs in this study. We herein propose the use of Fast-SLAM to combine GPS and LIDAR. The difference between the original Fast-SLAM and the proposed method is the use of the log-likelihood function of GPS; the proposed combination method is implemented using a probabilistic mathematics formulation. The proposed methods were evaluated using sensor data measured in a real petrochemical complex in Japan ranging in size from 550–380 m. RTK-GPS data was used for the GPS measurement and had an availability of 56%. Our results showed that Fast-SLAM 2.0 based on GPS and LIDAR in a dense grid map produced the best results. There was significant improvement in alignment to aerial data, and the mean square root error was 0.65 m. To evaluate the mapping consistency, accurate 3D point cloud data measured by Faro Focus 3D (± 3 mm) was used as the ground truth. Building sizes were compared; the minimum mean errors were 0.17 and 0.08 m for the oil refinery and management building area and the area of a sparse building layout with large oil tanks, respectively. Consequently, a consistent map, which was also consistent with an aerial map (from Google Maps), was built by Fast-SLAM 1.0 and 2.0 based on GPS and LIDAR. Our method reproduced map consistency results for ten runs with a variance of ± 0.3 m. Our method reproduced map consistency results with a global accuracy of 0.52 m in a low RTK-Fix-GPS environment, which was a factory with a building layout similar to petrochemical complexes with 20.9% of RTK-Fix-GPS data availability

    Kamishoyosan and Shakuyakukanzoto promote recovery from paclitaxel-induced neurite retraction in PC12 cells

    Background: In chemotherapy, the full round of treatment must be completed as scheduled to achieve the strongest therapeutic effect. However, peripheral neuropathy, a severe side effect of the chemotherapeutic agent paclitaxel, can force the premature discontinuation of treatment. As some kampo practitioners have suggested that it may be possible to counteract such side effects, we analyzed the effects of Kamishoyosan, Shakuyakukanzoto, and Goshajinkigan in an in vitro model of paclitaxel-induced peripheral neuropathy. Methods: Paclitaxel-treated PC12 cells were assessed for neurite length and performed Western blot analysis for growth-associated protein-43 (GAP-43) and light neurofilament protein (NF-L) levels in the presence of nerve growth factor (NGF); they were re-assessed, with additional testing for acetylcholinesterase levels, after application of one of the kampo. We also compared phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (Erk)1/2 and Akt via Western blot analysis. About effect of kampo to anticancer efficacy, we confirmed cell cytotoxicity in A549 cells using MTT assay. Results: Addition of Kamishoyosan or Shakuyakukanzoto, but not Goshajinkigan, significantly improved neurite length and GAP-43 and NF-L levels from paclitaxel-treated PC12 cells, relative to those of only NGF-treated PC12 cells. The promoting effect of Kamishoyosan and Shakuyakukanzoto in neurite outgrowth is confirmed when NGF promoted neurite outgrowth, and it was inhibited partially when Erk1/2 and Akt were blocked by Erk1/2 inhibitor or Akt inhibitor alone. Furthermore, neurite outgrowth induced by TJ24 and TJ68 was inhibited more strongly when Erk1/2 inhibitor and Akt inhibitor were treated at the same time. NGF with Kamishoyosan or Shakuyakukanzoto promoted the proportion of phosphorylated Erk1/2 and phosphorylated Akt compare with NGF only. On the other hand, Kamishoyosan or Shakuyakukanzoto didn’t influence cytotoxicity of paclitaxel in A549 cells. Conclusions: Kamishoyosan or Shakuyakukanzoto promotes neurite outgrowth with NGF via increasing the proportion of phosphorylated Erk1/2 and phosphorylated Akt in PC12 cells. The effect applies to recovery from paclitaxel-induced axonal involvement and might promote recovery from paclitaxel-induced neuropathy without influence of anticancer effect of paclitaxel

    Bone mineral density estimation from a plain X-ray image by learning decomposition into projections of bone-segmented computed tomography

    Osteoporosis is a prevalent bone disease that causes fractures in fragile bones, leading to a decline in daily living activities. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and quantitative computed tomography (QCT) are highly accurate for diagnosing osteoporosis; however, these modalities require special equipment and scan protocols. To frequently monitor bone health, low-cost, low-dose, and ubiquitously available diagnostic methods are highly anticipated. In this study, we aim to perform bone mineral density (BMD) estimation from a plain X-ray image for opportunistic screening, which is potentially useful for early diagnosis. Existing methods have used multi-stage approaches consisting of extraction of the region of interest and simple regression to estimate BMD, which require a large amount of training data. Therefore, we propose an efficient method that learns decomposition into projections of bone-segmented QCT for BMD estimation under limited datasets. The proposed method achieved high accuracy in BMD estimation, where Pearson correlation coefficients of 0.880 and 0.920 were observed for DXA-measured BMD and QCT-measured BMD estimation tasks, respectively, and the root mean square of the coefficient of variation values were 3.27 to 3.79% for four measurements with different poses. Furthermore, we conducted extensive validation experiments, including multi-pose, uncalibrated-CT, and compression experiments toward actual application in routine clinical practice.Comment: 20 pages and 22 figure

    Risk factors of immune checkpoint inhibitor-related interstitial lung disease in patients with lung cancer : a single-institution retrospective study

    Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) elicit antitumour effects by activating the host immunity and cause immune-related adverse events (irAEs). ICI-related interstitial lung disease (ICI-ILD) is a fatal irAE that is difficult to treat; moreover, its incidence is relatively higher in patients with lung cancer. Therefore, early ICI-ILD detection and intervention are important for patient safety. However, a risk assessment method for ICI-ILD has not been established and the prediction of ICI-ILD occurrence is difficult. The aim of our study was to identify the risk factors associated with ICI-ILD. To this end, we retrospectively analysed 102 patients with lung cancer who first received ICI and completed the treatment between April 2016 and December 2019 at Tokushima University Hospital. Nineteen patients had all grades of ICI-ILD and 10 had grade ≥ 3 ICI-ILD. The 30-day mortality rate of patients with grade ≥ 3 ICI-ILD was the highest among all patients (P < 0.01). The multivariate logistic analysis indicated that the performance status ≥ 2 alone and both performance status ≥ 2 and ≥ 50 pack-year were independent risk factors of ICI-ILD of grade ≥ 3 and all grades, respectively. Overall, our study provides insights to predict ICI-ILD occurrence

    Pharmacovigilance evaluation of the relationship between impaired glucose metabolism and BCR‐ABL inhibitor use by using an adverse drug event reporting database

    Breakpoint cluster region‐Abelson murine leukemia (BCR‐ABL) inhibitors markedly improve the prognosis of chronic myeloid leukemia. However, high treatment adherence is necessary for successful treatment with BCR‐ABL inhibitors. Therefore, an adequate understanding of the adverse event profiles of BCR‐ABL inhibitors is essential. Although many adverse events are observed in trials, an accurate identification of adverse events based only on clinical trial results is difficult because of strict entry criteria or limited follow‐up durations. In particular, BCR‐ABL inhibitor‐induced impaired glucose metabolism remains controversial. Pharmacovigilance evaluations using spontaneous reporting systems are useful for analyzing drug‐related adverse events in clinical settings. Therefore, we conducted signal detection analyses for BCR‐ABL inhibitor‐induced impaired glucose metabolism by using the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) and Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report (JADER) database. Signals for an increased reporting rate of impaired glucose metabolism were detected only for nilotinib use, whereas these signals were not detected for other BCR‐ABL inhibitors. Subgroup analyses showed a clearly increased nilotinib‐associated reporting rate of impaired glucose metabolism in male and younger patients. Although FAERS‐ and JADER‐based signal detection analyses cannot determine causality perfectly, our study suggests the effects on glucose metabolism are different between BCR‐ABL inhibitors and provides useful information for the selection of appropriate BCR‐ABL inhibitors

    Successful Vancomycin Dose Adjustment in a Sepsis patient with Bacterial Meningitis Using Cystatin C

    Cystatin C-guided vancomycin (VCM) dosing is useful in critically ill patients. Its usefulness in septic patients with bacterial meningitis remains unknown, as there are no published reports. In this study, we sought to clarify its benefit. Cystatin C was used to guide VCM dosing in a septic bacterial meningitis patient with normal kidney function, according to therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM). Using cystatin C, the Bayesian method-based TDM made optimal VCM dosing possible, and decreased the predicted error (4.85 mg/L) compared to serum creatinine (16.83 mg/L). We concluded TDM of VCM using cystatin C can be considered in sepsis patients with bacterial meningitis with normal kidney function

    Study on joint characteristics in laser butt welding of AMed and wrought Ti6Al4V plates

    Titanium alloy Ti6Al4V has been widely applied to medical, automotive, and aerospace industries due to its excellent properties such as high strength and excellent corrosion resistance. On the other hand, additive manufacturing (AM) technology can give the freedom of design of the products. In order to spread the AMed products, the joining of AMed and wrought products are required, and it is important to understand the joint characteristics. In this study, butt welding of Ti6Al4V plate was conducted by fiber laser in argon shielding, and the joint characteristics of laser weld wrought/wrought, AMed/AMed, and AMed/wrought Ti6Al4V plates were experimentally investigated. The AMed plate has higher tensile strength than wrought plate but the elongation of AMed plate is smaller, since AMed plate has α’ martensite due to rapid cooling during laser irradiation in AM process. Then, the laser weld joint of AMed/AMed plates has higher tensile strength, but smaller elongation than that of wrought/wrought plates. The weld joint of AMed/wrought plates shows good welding state, since small heat input leads to formation of small weld bead with higher hardness between wrought and AMed plates
