    Real time dynamics and proposal for feasible experiments of lattice gauge-Higgs model simulated by cold atoms

    Lattice gauge theory has provided a crucial non-perturbative method in studying canonical models in high-energy physics such as quantum chromodynamics. Among other models of lattice gauge theory, the lattice gauge-Higgs model is a quite important one because it describes wide variety of phenomena/models related to the Anderson-Higgs mechanism such as superconductivity, the standard model of particle physics, and inflation process of the early universe. In this paper, we first show that atomic description of the lattice gauge model allows us to explore real time dynamics of the gauge variables by using the Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Numerical simulations of the time development of an electric flux reveal some interesting characteristics of dynamical aspect of the model and determine its phase diagram. Next, to realize a quantum simulator of the U(1) lattice gauge-Higgs model on an optical lattice filled by cold atoms, we propose two feasible methods: (i) Wannier states in the excited bands and (ii) dipolar atoms in a multilayer optical lattice. We pay attentions to respect the constraint of Gauss's law and avoid nonlocal gauge interactions.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure

    A semiquantitative analysis of reactive astrogliosis demonstrates its correlation with the number of intact motor neurons after transient spinal cord ischemia

    ObjectiveWe evaluated the relationship between reactive astrogliosis and delayed motor neuron death after transient spinal cord ischemia in rabbits using a semiquantitative analysis of glial fibrillary acidic protein expression.MethodsSpinal cord ischemia was induced by means of balloon occlusion of the infrarenal aorta for 15 minutes at 39°C in 18 New Zealand white rabbits. At 1, 3, and 7 days after reperfusion, 6 animals at each time point were killed, and the spinal cord was removed for histologic and immunohistochemical study. The variables analyzed were (1) neurologic function (Johnson score) at every 24 hours after reperfusion, (2) the number of intact motor neurons and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase–mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate-biotin nick-end labeling–positive positive neurons, and (3) expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein in the gray and white matter, which was expressed as the percentage of stained area.ResultsAll animals presented delayed motor neuron death. The number of intact neurons decreased correlatively with neurologic function. No obvious terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase–mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate-biotin nick-end labeling–positive cells were observed. Glial fibrillary acidic protein expression increased with time in both the gray and white matter, representing the development of reactive astrogliosis. Significant correlation was found between glial fibrillary acidic protein expression and the number of intact motor neurons on the third day in both the gray (r2 = 0.726, P = .031) and white (r2 = 0.927, P = .002) matter.ConclusionsReactive astrogliosis 3 days after transient spinal cord ischemia correlates with the number of intact motor neurons. Our method for semiquantitative analysis of reactive astrogliosis is simple and reproducible and seems useful for such experimental studies

    Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery using mobile computed tomography: New method for locating of small lung nodules

    BACKGROUND: The O-arm is an intraoperative imaging device that can provide computed tomography images. Surgery for small lung tumors was performed based on intraoperative computed tomography images obtained using the O-arm. This study evaluated the usefulness of the O-arm in thoracic surgery. METHODS: From July 2013 to November 2013, 10 patients with small lung nodules or ground glass nodules underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery using the O-arm. A needle was placed on the visceral pleura near the nodules. After the lung was re-expanded, intraoperative computed tomography was performed using the O-arm. Then, the positional relationship between the needle marking and the tumor was recognized based on the intraoperative computed tomography images, and lung resection was performed. RESULTS: In 9 patients, the tumor could be seen on intraoperative computed tomography images using the O-arm. In 1 patient with a ground glass nodule, the lesion could not be seen, but its location could be inferred by comparison between preoperative and intraoperative computed tomography images. In only 1 patient with a ground glass nodule, a pathological complete resection was not performed. There were no complications related to the use of the O-arm. CONCLUSIONS: The O-arm may be an additional tool to facilitate intraoperative localization and surgical resection of non-palpable lung lesions

    Two Cases of Duodenal Ulcers That Developed after Transcatheter Procedures for Unruptured Visceral Artery Aneurysms

    Herein, we report two cases of duodenal ulcers that developed after transcatheter procedures for the treatment of unruptured artery aneurysms. Both patients recovered after the administration of nothing by mouth, intravenous fluids, and proton-pump inhibitors. Notably, the duodenal ulcer was unchanged in one patient six days after endovascular treatment and improved in the other patient 13 days after angiography. These cases suggest that conservative treatment is acceptable in patients with duodenal ischemia that develops as an adverse effect of endovascular procedures. The usefulness of esophagogastroduodenoscopy in such patients has also been highlighted

    Our recent study showed that the simultaneous application of clotrimazole with CdCI2 or PbCI2 exerted potent cytotoxic action in rat thymocytes although respective agents were ineffective. It was also the case of ZnCl2 and clotrimazole in preliminary study using rat thymocytes. Since clotrimazole is supposed to be a candidate for anticancer drug, we examined the effects of clotrimazole, ZnCI2, and their combination on human leukemia K562 cells. The combination of clotrimazole and ZnCl2 exerted potent cytotoxic effects on the growth and lethality of K562 cells by presumably modifying the process of cell death. The result suggests the possibility that endogenous Zn2+ may modify the action of clotrimazole

    VLBI Astrometry of the Semiregular Variable RX Bootis

    We present distance measurement of the semiregular variable RX Bootis (RX Boo) with its annual parallax. Using the unique dual-beam system of the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA) telescope, we conducted astrometric observations of a water maser spot accompanying RX Boo referred to the quasar J1419+2706 separated by 1.69 degrees from RX Boo. We have measured the annual parallax of RX Boo to be 7.31 +/- 0.50 mas, corresponding to a distance of 136 +10/-9 pc, from the one-year monitoring observation data of one maser spot at VLSR = 3.2 km/s. The distance itself is consistent with the one obtained with Hipparcos. The distance uncertainty is reduced by a factor of two, allowing us to determine the stellar properties more accurately. Using our distance, we discuss the location of RX Boo in various sequences of Period-Luminosity (PL) relations. We found RX Boo is located in the Mira sequence of PL relation. In addition, we calculated the radius of photosphere and the mass limitation of RX Boo and discussed its evolutionary status.Comment: 8 pages, 4figure

    Adriamycin and paclitaxel are simultaneously used for cancer treatment in some cases. The formula of paclitaxel contains cremophor EL as a solvent. Since this solvent exerts diverse biological actions, the modification of adriamycin action by cremophor EL has been studied on human leukemia K562 cells. Cremophor EL did not significantly affect the concentration-response relation for antiproliferative action of adriamycin and the cell cycle changed by adriamycin. However, the induction of morphological change by adriamycin was significantly augmented by cremophor EL. The simultaneous application of cremophor EL increased the intensity of fluorescence from adriamycin trapped inside the cells in a concentration-dependent manner, suggesting an increase in intracellular concentration of adriamycin by cremophor EL. Adriamycin alone at concentrations higher than those to completely inhibit the growth induced morphological change in K562 cells. Therefore, cremophor EL may potentiate some of actions induced by adriamycin when adriamycin and paclitaxel are simultaneously applied
