Statistical mechanics and stability of a model eco-system
We study a model ecosystem by means of dynamical techniques from disordered
systems theory. The model describes a set of species subject to competitive
interactions through a background of resources, which they feed upon.
Additionally direct competitive or co-operative interaction between species may
occur through a random coupling matrix. We compute the order parameters of the
system in a fixed point regime, and identify the onset of instability and
compute the phase diagram. We focus on the effects of variability of resources,
direct interaction between species, co-operation pressure and dilution on the
stability and the diversity of the ecosystem. It is shown that resources can be
exploited optimally only in absence of co-operation pressure or direct

Detection of RBM15-MKL1 Fusion Was Useful for Diagnosis and Monitoring of Minimal Residual Disease in Infant Acute Megakaryoblastic Leukemia
Acute megakaryocytic leukemia (AMKL) with t(1;22)(p13;q13) is a distinct category of myeloid leukemia by WHO classification and mainly reported in infants and young children. Accurate diagnosis of this type of AMKL can be difficult, because a subset of patients have a bone marrow (BM) blast percentage of less than 20% due to BM fibrosis. Therefore, it is possible that past studies have underestimated this type of AMKL. We present here the case of a 4-month-old female AMKL patient who was diagnosed by presence of the RBM15-MKL1 (OTT-MAL) fusion transcript by RT-PCR. In addition, we monitored RBM15-MKL1 fusion at several time points as a marker of minimal residual disease (MRD), and found that it was continuously negative after the first induction chemotherapy even by nested RT-PCR. Detection of the RBM15-MKL1 fusion transcript thus seems to be useful for accurate diagnosis of AMKL with t(1;22)(p13;q13). We recommend that the RBM15-MKL1 fusion transcript be analyzed for all suspected AMKL in infants and young children. Furthermore, monitoring of MRD using this fusion transcript would be useful in treatment of AMKL with t(1;22)(p13;q13)
Rank abundance relations in evolutionary dynamics of random replicators
We present a non-equilibrium statistical mechanics description of rank
abundance relations (RAR) in random community models of ecology. Specifically,
we study a multi-species replicator system with quenched random interaction
matrices. We here consider symmetric interactions as well as asymmetric and
anti-symmetric cases. RARs are obtained analytically via a generating
functional analysis, describing fixed-point states of the system in terms of a
small set of order parameters, and in dependence on the symmetry or otherwise
of interactions and on the productivity of the community. Our work is an
extension of Tokita [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 93} 178102 (2004)], where the case
of symmetric interactions was considered within an equilibrium setup. The
species abundance distribution in our model come out as truncated normal
distributions or transformations thereof and, in some case, are similar to
left-skewed distributions observed in ecology. We also discuss the interaction
structure of the resulting food-web of stable species at stationarity, cases of
heterogeneous co-operation pressures as well as effects of finite system size

Recurrence of Atrial Fibrillation within Three Months after Pulmonary Vein Isolation in Patients with Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation : Analysis Using an External Loop Recorder with Auto-trigger Function
Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) via catheter ablation has been shown to be a highly effective option for patients with symptomatic paroxysmal atrial brillation (AF). The recurrence of AF within 3 months after PVI is not considered a failure of the ablation procedure because early recurrence of AF is not always associated with late recurrence. We examined the usefulness of an external loop recorder with auto-trigger function (ELR-AUTO) to detect AF following PVI to characterize early recurrence and determine the implication of AF within 3 months after PVI. The study included 53 consecutive patients with symptomatic paroxysmal AF (age, 61.6 ± 12.6 years ; 77% male) who underwent PVI, and were fitted with an ELR-AUTO for 7 ± 2 days within 3 months after PVI. Of the 33 patients(62.2%) who did not have AF within the 3-month period, only 1 patient had AF recurrence at 12 months. Seven of 20 patients (35%) who experienced AF within 3 months had symptomatic AF recurrence at 12 months. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of early AF recurrence for late recurrence was 87.5%, 71.1%, 35.0%, and 96.9%, respectively. Thus, AF recurrence detected by ELR-AUTO within 3 months after PVI can predict late AF recurrence. Freedom from AF in the firrst 3 months following ablation significantly predicts long-term freedom from AF. An ELR-AUTO is useful for detecting symptomatic and asymptomatic AF

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) provides life-saving humanitarian aid for 5·4 million Palestine refugees now entering their eighth decade of statelessness and conflict. About a third of Palestine refugees still live in 58 recognised camps. UNRWA operates 702 schools and 144 health centres, some of which are affected by the ongoing humanitarian disasters in Syria and the Gaza Strip. It has dramatically reduced the prevalence of infectious diseases, mortality, and illiteracy. Its social services include rebuilding infrastructure and homes that have been destroyed by conflict and providing cash assistance and micro-finance loans for Palestinians whose rights are curtailed and who are denied the right of return to their homeland
Anxiety and its risk factors among non-Japanese residents living in Japan undergoing COVID-19 situation: A cross-sectional survey
Introduction In the context of collective efforts taken in Japan to control the spread of COVID-19, the state of emergency and social distancing have caused a negative impact on the mental health of all residents, including foreign communities in Japan. This study aimed to evaluate the level of anxiety and its associated factors among non-Japanese residents residing in Japan during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods A web-based survey in 13 languages was conducted among non-Japanese residents living in Japan during the COVID-19 situation. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory assessed the level of anxiety–State (STAI-S) scores prorated from its six-item version. The multivariable logistic regression using the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) method was performed to identify the associated factors of anxiety among participants. Results From January to March 2021, we collected 392 responses. A total of 357 valid responses were analyzed. 54.6% of participants suffered from clinically significant anxiety (CSA). In multivariable logistic model analysis, the CSA status or the high level of anxiety was associated with three factors, including having troubles/difficulties in learning or working, decreased sleep duration, and decreased overall physical health (p<0.05). Conclusion Our study suggests several possible risk factors of anxiety among non-Japanese residents living in Japan undergoing the COVID-19 pandemic, including the troubles or difficulties in learning or working, the decrease in sleep duration, and the decrease in overall physical health.Revisión por pare
Iron/Photosensitizer Hybrid System Enables the Synthesis of Polyaryl-Substituted Azafluoranthenes
Photosensitization of organometallics is a privileged strategy that enables challenging transformations in transition-metal catalysis. However, the usefulness of such photocatalyst-induced energy transfer has remained opaque in iron-catalyzed reactions despite the intriguing prospects of iron catalysis in synthetic chemistry. Herein, we demonstrate the use of iron/photosensitizer-cocatalyzed cycloaddition to synthesize polyarylpyridines and azafluoranthenes, which have been scarcely accessible using the established iron-catalyzed protocols. Mechanistic studies indicate that triplet energy transfer from the photocatalyst to a ferracydic intermediate facilitates the thermally demanding nitrile insertion and accounts for the distinct reactivity of the hybrid system. This study thus provides the first demonstration of the role of photosensitization in overcoming the limitations of iron catalysis
