Spatiotemporal changes in biomass after selective logging in a lowland tropical rainforest in peninsular Malaysia

We studied biomass changes in a lowland tropical rain forest in the Pasoh Forest Reserve of Peninsular Malaysia after selective logging in 1958. A tree census was undertaken every 2 years from 1998 to 2012 in a 6-ha logged forest plot. Total aboveground biomass (AGB) was 72 % of that in a primary forest plot within the same reserve in 1998, but reached 87 % in 2012. AGB regrowth was spatially variable within the logged forest plot and was much less in swampy areas than in upland areas. The overall annual growth rate of AGB in the logged forest throughout the study period was 1.5 % and slowed (to 0.6 %) in a dry period (2004-2006). The biomass of large trees (DBH ≥ 50 cm) increased by 56 % during the study period, but amounted to only 58 % of the biomass of the corresponding size class in the primary forest, suggesting that stand structure is still recovering from logging. Spatiotemporal variation in AGB recovery after logging needs to be taken into account for logging and subsequent management of the tropical lowland forest biome

A questionnaire survey was performed on eating habits including the consciousness of salt-intake reduction on the occasion of health consultation and other meetings for 838 persons living in a city, towns and villages covered by Hisai public health center in Mie prefecture. In this survey the balance of nutrition was examined by means of the system of 8 foodstuff groups and 5 points measuring order. (1) In the balance of nutrition for each of the city, towns and villages and for each of the foodstuff groups, there has been found no significant difference in intake scores among the city, towns and villages and among the foodstuff groups. However, considerable imbalance has been observed in the score values of individual foodstuff groups and the values were almost lower than the target values. (2) In the consciousness of salt-intake reduction an improvement has bden seen in the intake of "Miso" soup as a result of daily instruction on nutrition to limit the intake of "Miso" soup to "one cup a day". On the other hand, in the intake of pickles about a half of the persons examined eats them at each meal, and it has also been found that people in a few towns and villages have a low level in the consciousness of salt-intake reduction. (3) There have been observed significant differences in the taste for food, habit of net taking breakfast and cooking ways of fish and vegetables among the city, towns and villages

Seismic exploration at Fuji volcano with active sources : The outline of the experiment and the arrival time data

Fuji volcano (altitude 3,776m) is the largest basaltic stratovolcano in Japan. In late August and early September 2003, seismic exploration was conducted around Fuji volcano by the detonation of 500 kg charges of dynamite to investigate the seismic structure of that area. Seismographs with an eigenfrequency of 2 Hz were used for observation, positioned along a WSW-ENE line passing through the summit of the mountain. A total of 469 seismic stations were installed at intervals of 250-500 m. The data were stored in memory on-site using data loggers. The sampling interval was 4 ms. Charges were detonated at 5 points, one at each end of the observation line and 3 along its length. The first arrival times and the later-phase arrival times at each station for each detonation were recorded as data. P-wave velocities in the surface layer were estimated from the travel time curves near the explosion points, with results of 2.5 km/s obtained for the vicinity of Fuji volcano and 4.0 km5/s elsewhere

This paper analyzes the pronouncement issued in a cassation court, which evaluated the question of whether the judicial proceedings filed by the owner of a property against someone requesting the acquisitive prescription of domain would affect the requirements of pacificity and continuity of the latter. For this purpose, the basic concepts established by the regulations and doctrine related to the real rights of ownership and possession, as well as the acquisitive prescription of domain, are used, delving into the causes of interruption and suspension, and it is concluded that the judicial proceedings by themselves do not affect the requirements of pacificity or continuity, but that this affectation will depend on whether these processes are protected and the restitution of the property to the owner is ordered through an eviction of the defendant, for the development of the work, legal articles, books, regulations and jurisprudence have been consulted, therefore, the position expressed in the singular vote issued in a cassation decision is shared.Trabajo de Suficiencia Profesiona

The construction of an EST database for \u3cem\u3eBombyx mori\u3c/em\u3e and its application

To build a foundation for the complete genome analysis of Bombyx mori, we have constructed an EST database. Because gene expression patterns deeply depend on tissues as well as developmental stages, we analyzed many cDNA libraries prepared from various tissues and different developmental stages to cover the entire set of Bombyx genes. So far, the Bombyx EST database contains 35,000 ESTs from 36 cDNA libraries, which are grouped into ≈11,000 nonredundant ESTs with the average length of 1.25 kb. The comparison with FlyBase suggests that the present EST database, SilkBase, covers \u3e55% of all genes of Bombyx. The fraction of library-specific ESTs in each cDNA library indicates that we have not yet reached saturation, showing the validity of our strategy for constructing an EST database to cover all genes. To tackle the coming saturation problem, we have checked two methods, subtraction and normalization, to increase coverage and decrease the number of housekeeping genes, resulting in a 5–11% increase of library-specific ESTs. The identification of a number of genes and comprehensive cloning of gene families have already emerged from the SilkBase search. Direct links of SilkBase with FlyBase and WormBase provide ready identification of candidate Lepidoptera-specific genes
