Metacognitive Evaluation Method in Consecutive Interpretation for Novice Learners

    Get PDF
This research mainly describes the metacognitive evaluation method that can affect both the teaching and learning process of learners, especially novice learners, in consecutive interpretation. The basic idea of this study is to argue that evaluation of novice learners should be based on standards differentiated from those geared towards professional interpreters. The purpose and limitations of evaluation from a pedagogical standpoint are examined, followed by an overview of evaluation in the interpretation classroom. This study is noteworthy in that it attempts to propose a framework for performance assessment and to introduce the learning curve concept as part of assessing the learning process, which are presented as the main elements of the metacognitive evaluation method.

Carative Factors in the Design Development Process: Towards Understanding Owner–Object Detachment and Promoting Object Longevity

    Get PDF
Designing for object detachment offers potential for extending an object’s lifespan and reducing environmental impact. The philosophy and theory of care-giving in nursing practice may be usefully adapted and applied to the care of possessions. Care-giving behaviour towards objects includes maintaining and repairing them, but also letting them go gracefully, and has potential implications for sustainable design. Little research has explored applying the concept of ‘carative factors’ (love and charity, and the motive of all caring) to the design process. This study introduces a toolkit based on four motive caring factors and influential factors, and reports on an exploratory workshop, in which participants use the toolkit to generate design concepts. The results suggest that the concept of carative factors has value in the design processes for extending the lifespan of objects, and the toolkit provides better understanding for designers of ownership, disposal and reuse

Simultaneous deletion of floxed genes mediated by CaMKIIa-Cre in the brain and in male germ cells: application to conditional and conventional disruption of Go-alfa

The Cre/LoxP system is a well-established approach to spatially and temporally control genetic inactivation. The calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II alpha subunit (CaMKIIα) promoter limits expression to specific regions of the forebrain and thus has been utilized for the brain-specific inactivation of the genes. Here, we show that CaMKIIα-Cre can be utilized for simultaneous inactivation of genes in the adult brain and in male germ cells. Double transgenic Rosa26+/stop-lacZ::CaMKIIα-Cre+/Cre mice generated by crossing CaMKIIα-Cre+/Cre mice with floxed ROSA26 lacZ reporter (Rosa26+/stop-lacZ) mice exhibited lacZ expression in the brain and testis. When these mice were mated to wild-type females, about 27% of the offspring were whole body blue by X-gal staining without inheriting the Cre transgene. These results indicate that recombination can occur in the germ cells of male Rosa26+/stop-lacZ::CaMKIIα-Cre+/Cre mice. Similarly, when double transgenic Gnao+/f::CaMKIIα-Cre+/Cre mice carrying a floxed Go-alpha gene (Gnaof/f) were backcrossed to wild-type females, approximately 22% of the offspring carried the disrupted allele (GnaoΔ) without inheriting the Cre transgene. The GnaoΔ/Δ mice closely resembled conventional Go-alpha knockout mice (Gnao−/−) with respect to impairment of their behavior. Thus, we conclude that CaMKIIα-Cre mice afford recombination for both tissue- and time-controlled inactivation of floxed target genes in the brain and for their permanent disruption. This work also emphasizes that extra caution should be exercised in utilizing CaMKIIα-Cre mice as breeding pairs.Fil: Choi, Chan-Il. Ajou University. PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF HYBRID SOLAR AIRWATER HEATER WITH VARIOUS INLET AIR TEMPERATURE DURING HEATING PROCESS

Research about hybrid solar air-water heater that can heating both air and liquid has been conducted for enhancing the usage of solar thermal energy. In the previous study, thermal efficiency of this collector was investigated with many operating and external conditions, but all of previous experiment conducted using outdoor air as inlet air of collector. Thus, in this study, the performance change of hybrid solar air-water heater was investigated with change of inlet air temperature during air and liquid were heated simultaneously. As a result, thermal efficiency for liquid heating was increased with increment of the inlet air temperature. On the contrary to this, thermal efficiency for air heating of collector was decreased with increment of inlet air temperature. In case of total thermal efficiency of collector considered air and liquid heat gain, it was also decreased with increment of inlet air temperature. From these results, it was confirmed that using outdoor air directly as inlet air of collector is better for the use of solar energy. However it is hard to conclude that which is better between using outdoor air and heated air on the perspective of energy saving of building because heat storage performance was increased if the return air or any heated air is used as inlet air of hybrid solar air-water heater when air and liquid was heated simultaneously even air and total thermal efficiency is decreased. Thus, the necessity of more profound study and consideration about this as a further study was also confirmed
