    An Investigation of the Collective Oscillations of a Bubble Cloud

    It is well known that ocean ambient noise levels in the frequency range from a few hundred hertz to several tens of kilohertz are well correlated with wind speed. A physical mechanism that could account for some of this sound generation is the production of bubble clouds by breaking waves. A simple laboratory study of the sound generated by a column of bubbles is reported here. From measurements of the various characteristics of this column, good evidence is obtained that the bubbles within the column are vibrating in a collective mode of oscillation. Based upon an assumption of collective oscillations, analytical calculations of the predicted frequency of vibration of this column as well as the dependence of this frequency on such parameters as bubble population and column geometry agree closely with the measured values. These results give evidence that the bubble plumes generated by breaking waves can be a strong source of relatively low frequency (< 1 kHz) ambient noise

    Design and fabrication of double pancake coil using 2G wire for conduction cooled superconducting magnet

    AbstractA large bore double pancake coil(DPC) was designed and tested with 2G HTS wire to develop the conduction cooled superconducting magnet with central field intensity of 3 T at 20K operating temperature and clear bore of 100mm at room temperature. The effect of insulation between turns of double pancake coils was tested. Two double pancake coils with and without turn to turn insulation were wound using 4mm wide 2G conductor. A temporary result suggests that the coil wound without electrical insulation can be protected from higher over current and shows improved stability

    Thermodynamics of a black hole based on a generalized uncertainty principle

    We study thermodynamic quantities and the stability of a black hole in a cavity using the Euclidean action formalism by Gibbons and Hawking based on the generalized uncertainty relation which is extended in a symmetric way with respect to the space and momentum without loss of generality. Two parameters in the uncertainty relation affect the thermodynamical quantities such as energy, entropy, and the heat capacity. In particular, it can be shown that the small black hole is unstable and it may decay either into a minimal black hole or a large black hole. We discuss a constraint for a large black hole comparable to the size of the cavity in connection with the critical mass.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures; v2. to appear in JHE

    Regular black hole in three dimensions

    We find a new black hole in three dimensional anti-de Sitter space by introducing an anisotropic perfect fluid inspired by the noncommutative black hole. This is a regular black hole with two horizons. We compare thermodynamics of this black hole with that of non-rotating BTZ black hole.     Expression profiling of cyclin B1 and D1 in cervical carcinoma

    Aim: Cyclins are a family of regulatory proteins that play a key role in controlling the cell cycle. Abnormalities of cell cycle regulators, including cyclins and cyclin dependent kinases, have been reported in various malignant tumors. This study was undertaken to quantitatively detect cyclin B1 and D1 in cervical cancer. Methods: A quantitative real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and Western blot assay were used to analyze the expression of cyclin B1/D1 mRNA and proteins, respectively, in fresh invasive cervical cancer (n = 41) and normal cervical tissues (n = 10). Results: There was significantly greater cyclin B1 expression in invasive cervical cancer than in normal cervical tissue (P = 0.019). However, cyclin D1 expression was not significantly different. A Western blot assay yielded similar results. Conclusion: Our results were consistent with the concept that up-regulation of cyclin B1 expression occurred in cervical cancer and an aberrant expression of cyclin B1 might play an important role in cervical carcinogenesis.Цель: циклины представляют собой семейство регуляторных белков, контролирующих клеточный цикл. Наличие функциональных и структурных нарушений регуляторов клеточного цикла (циклинов и циклинзависимых киназ) было отмечено в клетках различных злокачественных новообразований. Целью данного исследования было проведение количественного определения циклинов B1 и D1 в клетках рака шейки матки. Методы: определение уровня экспрессии циклинов B1/D1 (mRNA и белков соответственно) в свежеполученных клетках инвазивного рака шейки матки (n = 41) и нормальной ткани шейки матки (n = 10) проводили методами RT-PCR в режиме реального времени и Вестерн-блот анализа. Результаты: отмечен более высокий уровень экспрессии гена циклина В1 в клетках инвазивного рака шейки матки, чем в клетках нормальной ткани (P = 0,019). Не выявлены значительные различия в уровне экспрессии гена циклина D1. При Вестерн-блот анализе получены аналогичные результаты. Выводы: результаты исследования подтверждают концепцию об активации экспрессии циклина В1 при раке шейки матки. Аберрантная экспрессия циклина В1 может играть важную роль при злокачественной трансформации эпителия шейки матки

    High-resolution dielectric characterization of minerals: a step towards understanding the basic interactions between microwaves and rocks

    Microwave energy was demonstrated to be potentially beneficial for reducing the cost of several steps of the mining process. Significant literature was developed about this topic but few studies are focused on understanding the interaction between microwaves and minerals at a fundamental level in order to elucidate the underlying physical processes that control the observed phenomena. This is ascribed to the complexity of such phenomena, related to chemical and physical transformations, where electrical, thermal and mechanical forces play concurrent roles. In this work a new characterization method for the dielectric properties of mineral samples at microwave frequencies is presented. The method is based upon the scanning microwave microscopy technique that enables measurement of the dielectric constant, loss factor and conductivity with extremely high spatial resolution and accuracy. As opposed to conventional dielectric techniques, the scanning microwave microscope can then access and measure the dielectric properties of micrometric-sized mineral inclusions within a complex structure of natural rock. In this work two micrometric hematite inclusions were characterized at a microwave frequency of 3 GHz. Scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and confocal micro-Raman spectroscopy were used to determine the structural details and chemical and elemental composition of mineral sample on similar scale

    The CREAM calorimeter, designed to measure the spectra of cosmic-ray nuclei from under 1 TeV to 1000 TeV, is a 20 radiation length (X0) deep sampling calorimeter. The calorimeter is comprised of 20 layers of tungsten interleaved with 20 layers of scintillating fiber ribbons, and is preceded by a pair of graphite interaction targets providing about 0.42 proton interaction lengths (\lambda int). The calorimeter was placed in one of CERN's SPS accelerator beams for calibration and testing. Beams of 150 GeV electrons were used for calibration, and a variety of electron, proton, and nuclear fragment beams were used to test the simulation model of the detector.
