    Higher rank numerical ranges of normal matrices

    The higher rank numerical range is closely connected to the construction of quantum error correction code for a noisy quantum channel. It is known that if a normal matrix AMnA \in M_n has eigenvalues a1,.˙.,ana_1, \..., a_n, then its higher rank numerical range Λk(A)\Lambda_k(A) is the intersection of convex polygons with vertices aj1,.˙.,ajnk+1a_{j_1}, \..., a_{j_{n-k+1}}, where 1j1<.˙.<jnk+1n1 \le j_1 < \... < j_{n-k+1} \le n. In this paper, it is shown that the higher rank numerical range of a normal matrix with mm distinct eigenvalues can be written as the intersection of no more than max{m,4}\max\{m,4\} closed half planes. In addition, given a convex polygon P{\mathcal P} a construction is given for a normal matrix AMnA \in M_n with minimum nn such that Λk(A)=P\Lambda_k(A) = {\mathcal P}.     Perceptions of Safety Climate in Construction Projects between Workers and Managers/Supervisors in the Developing Country of Iran

    What are the different perceptions on safety climate (SC) by workers and managers/supervisors engaged in the construction industry of developing countries? Reconciling these two differing views is pivotal for mitigating and avoiding both the injured and fatal accidents in the construction industry, especially in those developing countries where safety conditions are poor and unpredictable, and safety measures are inadequate in most cases. To answer this research question, the collective perceptions of 118 construction workers and 123 managers/supervisors on the SC in construction projects in Iran were gleaned and investigated. In particular, these perceptions were initially collected by two different empirical surveys validated by a sample of university professors and construction managers and then analyzed through the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) test and Bartlett’s test of sphericity under factor analysis, together with a one-sample t-test. Results indicated that “workers’ attitudes and perceptions”, “safety knowledge and training”, “working relationships and roles of colleagues”, and “workers’ risk perceptions” are important categories of SC factors perceived by construction workers, whereas “safety rules and management practices” is the essential category of SC factors discerned by managers/supervisors. The difference in perceptions between workers and managers/supervisors is considered to be beneficial for an overall understanding of SC in general and for developing countries in particular. Moreover, a series of effective suggestions for improving SC in the construction industry of developing countries are provided with reference to each category. The views of SC factors are reinforced as a social process combining the synergies of workers and managers/supervisors, as well as proper safety training to be pushed forward as an essential activity that should be incorporated in human resources development of construction organizations so as to improve the existing level of SC, leading to fewer accidents at the industry level

    Radio emission as a stellar activity indicator

    Radio observations of stars trace the plasma conditions and magnetic field properties of stellar magnetospheres and coronae. Depending on the plasma conditions at the emitter site, radio emission in the metre- and decimetre-wave bands is generated via different mechanisms such as gyrosynchrotron, electron cyclotron maser instability, and plasma radiation processes. The ongoing LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) and VLA Sky Survey (VLASS) are currently the most sensitive wide-field radio sky surveys ever conducted. Because these surveys are untargeted, they provide an opportunity to study the statistical properties of the radio-emitting stellar population in an unbiased manner. Here, we perform an untargeted search for stellar radio sources down to sub-mJy level using these radio surveys. We find that the population of radio-emitting stellar systems is mainly composed of two distinct categories: chromospherically active stellar (CAS) systems and M dwarfs. We also seek to identify signatures of a gradual transition within the M-dwarf population from chromospheric/coronal acceleration close to the stellar surface similar to that observed on the Sun, to magnetospheric acceleration occurring far from the stellar surface similar to that observed on Jupiter. We determine that radio detectability evolves with spectral type, and we identify a transition in radio detectability around spectral type M4, where stars become fully convective. Furthermore, we compare the radio detectability vs spectra type with X-ray and optical flare (observed by TESS) incidence statistics. We find that the radio efficiency of X-ray/optical flares, which is the fraction of flare energy channelled into radio-emitting charges, increases with spectral type. These results motivate us to conjecture that the emergence of large-scale magnetic fields in CAS systems and later M dwarfs leads to an increase in radio efficiency.Comment: 29 pages, 14 figures, 5 tables.     Transforming Growth Factor Beta 1 drives a switch in connexin mediated cell-to-cell communication in tubular cells of the diabetic kidney

    Aims/Hypothesis: Changes in cell-to-cell communication have been linked to several secondary complications of diabetes, but the mechanism by which connexins affect disease progression in the kidney is poorly understood. This study examines a role for glucose-evoked changes in the beta1 isoform of transforming growth factor (TGFβ1), on connexin expression, gap-junction mediated intercellular communication (GJIC) and hemi-channel ATP release from tubular epithelial cells of the proximal renal nephron. Methods: Biopsy material from patients with and without diabetic nephropathy was stained for connexin-26 (CX26) and connexin-43 (CX43). Changes in expression were corroborated by immunoblot analysis in human primary proximal tubule epithelial cells (hPTECs) and model epithelial cells from human renal proximal tubules (HK2) cultured in either low glucose (5mmol/L) ± TGFβ1 (2-10ng/ml) or high glucose (25mmol/L) for 48h or 7days. Secretion of the cytokine was determined by ELISA. Paired whole cell patch clamp recordings were used to measure junctional conductance in control versus TGFβ1 treated (10ng/ml) HK2 cells, with carboxyfluorescein uptake and ATP-biosensing assessing hemi-channel function. A downstream role for ATP in mediating the effects of TGF-1 on connexin mediated cell communication was assessed by incubating cells with ATPS (1-100M) or TGF-1 +/- apyrase (5 Units/ml). Implications of ATP release were measured through immunoblot analysis of interleukin 6 (IL-6) and fibronectin expression. Results: Biopsy material from patients with diabetic nephropathy exhibited increased tubular expression of CX26 and CX43 (P<0.01, n=10), data corroborated in HK2 and hPTEC cells cultured in TGFβ1 (10ng/ml) for 7days (P<0.001, n=3). High glucose significantly increased TGFβ1 secretion from tubular epithelial cells (P<0.001, n=3). The cytokine (10ng/ml) reduced junctional conductance between HK2 cells from 4.5±1.3nS in control to 1.15±0.9nS following 48h TGFβ1 and to 0.42±0.2nS after 7days TGFβ1 incubation (P<0.05, n=5). Acute (48h) and chronic (7day) challenge with TGFβ1 produced a carbenoxolone (200M)-sensitive increase in carboxyfluorescein loading, matched by an increase in ATP release from 0.29±0.06μM in control to 1.99±0.47μM after 48hr incubation with TGFβ1 (10ng/ml; P<0.05, n=3). TGF-1 (2-10ng/ml) and ATPs (1-100M) increased expression of IL-6 (P<0.001 n=3) and fibronectin (P<0.01 n=3). The effect of TGF-1 on IL-6 and fibronectin expression was partially blunted when preincubated with apyrase (n=3). Conclusion: These data suggest that chronic exposure to glucose-evoked TGFβ1 induce an increase in CX26 and CX43 expression, consistent with changes observed in tubular epithelia from patients with diabetic nephropathy. Despite increased connexin expression, direct GJIC communication decreases, whilst hemichannel expression/function and paracrine release of ATP increases, changes that trigger increased levels of expression of interleukin 6 and fibronectin. Linked to inflammation and fibrosis, local increases in purinergic signals may exacerbate disease progression and highlight connexin mediated cell communication as a future therapeutic target for diabetic nephropath

    Development and Validation of a Sensitive Entropy-Based Measure for the Water Maze

    In the water maze, mice are trained to navigate to an escape platform located below the water's surface, and spatial learning is most commonly evaluated in a probe test in which the platform is removed from the pool. While contemporary tracking software provides precise positional information of mice for the duration of the probe test, existing performance measures (e.g., percent quadrant time, platform crossings) fail to exploit fully the richness of this positional data. Using the concept of entropy (H), here we develop a new measure that considers both how focused the search is and the degree to which searching is centered on the former platform location. To evaluate how H performs compared to existing measures of water maze performance we compiled five separate databases, containing more than 1600 mouse probe tests. Random selection of individual trials from respective databases then allowed us to simulate experiments with varying sample and effect sizes. Using this Monte Carlo-based method, we found that H outperformed existing measures in its ability to detect group differences over a range of sample or effect sizes. Additionally, we validated the new measure using three models of experimentally induced hippocampal dysfunction: (1) complete hippocampal lesions, (2) genetic deletion of αCaMKII, a gene implicated in hippocampal behavioral and synaptic plasticity, and (3) a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease. Together, these data indicate that H offers greater sensitivity than existing measures, most likely because it exploits the richness of the precise positional information of the mouse throughout the probe test

    Genotyping of Sarawak rice cultivars using microsatellite markers

    Genetic diversity of 53 Sarawak rice cultivars, originating from Southern Sarawak, was assessed using 54 microsatellite markers. Initial polymorphism detection was conducted using 54 primer pairs distributed on 12 rice chromosomes. Polymorphic markers were chosen from the initial screening results in order to obtain microsatellite marker panels that can differentiate the rice cultivars undertaken in the study. The chosen microsatellite marker panel consisted of RM1, RM240, RM489, RM252, RM413, RM204, RM11, RM404, RM316, RM271, RM206, and RM19, with one representative from each chromosome. A total of 43 alleles were detected with an average of 3.58 alleles per locus. The polymorphism information content (PIC) values obtained from the microsatellite marker panels ranged from 0.306 to 0.730, with an average of 0.622. The Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean (UPGMA) dendrogram (r = 0.789) revealed 2 major groups with 6 sub-clusters and the wide range of similarity values (0.24-1.0) obtained showed a high degree of diversity among the cultivars. The results suggest microsatellite markers as a useful tool for the estimation of genetic diversity and cultivar differentiation and present invaluable genetic information for future breeding and association mapping efforts

    State Transition Algorithm

    In terms of the concepts of state and state transition, a new heuristic random search algorithm named state transition algorithm is proposed. For continuous function optimization problems, four special transformation operators called rotation, translation, expansion and axesion are designed. Adjusting measures of the transformations are mainly studied to keep the balance of exploration and exploitation. Convergence analysis is also discussed about the algorithm based on random search theory. In the meanwhile, to strengthen the search ability in high dimensional space, communication strategy is introduced into the basic algorithm and intermittent exchange is presented to prevent premature convergence. Finally, experiments are carried out for the algorithms. With 10 common benchmark unconstrained continuous functions used to test the performance, the results show that state transition algorithms are promising algorithms due to their good global search capability and convergence property when compared with some popular algorithms.Comment: 18 pages, 28 figure

    Preliminary results of trial NPC-0501 evaluating the therapeutic gain by changing from concurrent-adjuvant to induction-concurrent chemoradiotherapy, changing from fluorouracil to capecitabine, and changing from conventional to accelerated radiotherapy fractionation in patients with locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma

BACKGROUND A current recommendation for locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is conventional fractionated radiotherapy with concurrent cisplatin plus adjuvant cisplatin and fluorouracil (PF). In this randomized trial, the authors evaluated the potential therapeutic benefit from changing to an induction-concurrent chemotherapy sequence, replacing fluorouracil with oral capecitabine, and/or using accelerated rather than conventional radiotherapy fractionation. METHODS Patients with stage III through IVB, nonkeratinizing NPC were randomly allocated to 1 of 6 treatment arms. The protocol was amended in 2009 to permit confining randomization to the conventional fractionation arms. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival. Secondary endpoints included overall survival and safety. RESULTS In total, 803 patients were accrued, and 706 patients were randomly allocated to all 6 treatment arms. Comparisons of induction PF versus adjuvant PF did not indicate a significant improvement. Unadjusted comparisons of induction cisplatin and capecitabine (PX) versus adjuvant PF indicated a favorable trend in progression-free survival for the conventional fractionation arm (P = .045); analyses that were adjusted for other significant factors and fractionation reflected a significant reduction in the hazards of disease progression (hazard ratio [HR], 0.54; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.36-0.80) and death (HR, 0.42; 95% CI, 0.25-0.70). Unadjusted comparisons of induction sequences versus adjuvant sequences did not reach statistical significance, but adjusted comparisons indicated favorable improvements by induction sequence. Comparisons of induction PX versus induction PF revealed fewer toxicities (neutropenia and electrolyte disturbance), unadjusted comparisons of efficacy were statistically insignificant, but adjusted analyses indicated that induction PX had a lower hazard of death (HR, 0.57; 95% CI, 0.34-0.97). Changing the fractionation from conventional to accelerated did not achieve any benefit but incurred higher toxicities (acute mucositis and dehydration). CONCLUSIONS Preliminary results indicate that the benefit of changing to an induction-concurrent sequence remains uncertain; replacing fluorouracil with oral capecitabine warrants further validation in view of its convenience, favorable toxicity profile, and favorable trends in efficacy; and accelerated fractionation is not recommended for patients with locoregionally advanced NPC who receive chemoradiotherapy.postprin

    Global Guidelines in Dermatology Mapping Project (GUIDEMAP):a scoping review of dermatology clinical practice guidelines

    Background Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) play a critical role in standardizing and improving treatment outcomes based on the available evidence. It is unclear how many CPGs are available globally to assist clinicians in the management of patients with skin disease. Objectives To search for and identify CPGs for dermatological conditions with the highest burden globally. Methods We adapted a list of 12 dermatological conditions with the highest burden from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study 2019. A systematic literature search was done to identify CPGs published between October 2014 to October 2019. The scoping review was conducted and reported in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework. Results A total of 226 CPGs were included. Melanoma had the greatest representation in the CPGs, followed by dermatitis and psoriasis. Skin cancers had a relatively high CPG representation but with lower GBD disease burden ranking. There was an uneven distribution by geographical region, with resource-poor settings being under-represented. The skin disease categories of the CPGs correlated weakly with the GBD disability-adjusted life-years metrics. Eighty-nine CPGs did not have funding disclosures and 34 CPGs were behind a paywall. Conclusions The global production of dermatology CPGs showed wide variation in geographical representation, article accessibility and reporting of funding. The number of skin disease CPGs were not commensurate with its disease burden. Future work will critically appraise the methodology and quality of dermatology CPGs and lead to the production of an accessible online resource summarizing these findings.Dermatology-oncolog
