    Local stiffener and skin pocket buckling prediction by special PASCO modeling technique: Correlation to test data

    Waffle panels are often used on fuselage structures such as that of the Space Shuttle. The waffle panel design is an efficient design for carrying biaxial, in-plane, and shear loads. The WAFFLE program was designed for application on waffle panels. The Panel Analysis and Sizing Code (PASCO) program was designed for analyzing and sizing uniaxially stiffened panels. The application of the PASCO program in conjunction with the WAFFLE program is discussed to account for both the fillet radius and the presence of stiffness in both directions. The results of the tests are used to verify that these adjustments are valid and necessary if accurate analysis of the waffle panel is to be achieved

    Frequencies of board meetings on various topics and corporate governance: evidence from China

    This paper examines the relationship between number of topic-specific board meetings and quality of corporate governance. The quality of corporate governance is estimated by CEO turnover-performance and compensation-performance sensitivities. Information about topic-specific meetings is collected from the reports of independent directors of Chinese listed firms. We find that more frequent discussions of growth strategies related to the use of IPO proceeds, investment and acquisitions increase CEO compensation-performance sensitivity. By contrast, more discussions about the nomination of directors and top management are likely to reduce the sensitivities of both CEO turnover and compensation to performance. Our findings shed light on what makes boards efficient, and how board monitoring of assorted decisions modifies the relationship between CEO interests and firm performance

    Insect pests are considered the major hurdle in enhancing the production and productivity of any farming system. The use of conventional synthetic pesticides has led to the emergence of pesticide-resistant insects, environmental pollution, and negative effects on natural enemies, which have caused an ecological imbalance of the predator-prey ratio and human health hazards; therefore, eco-friendly alternative strategies are required. The plant kingdom, a rich repertoire of secondary metabolites, can be tapped as an alternative for insect pest management strategies. A number of plants have been documented to have insecticidal properties against various orders of insects in vitro by acting as antifeedants, repellents, sterilant and oviposition deterrents, etc. However, only a few plant compounds are applicable at the field level or presently commercialised. Here, we have provided an overview of the broad-spectrum insecticidal activity of plant compounds from neem, Annona, Pongamia, and Jatropha.     Cold gas dynamic spraying (CGDS) is an emerging technique that involves the surface modification in order to provide enhanced surface properties on material substrates. Particles, with size in the range of 1–50 ÎŒm, are accelerated by a supersonic jet gas up to 1200 m/s and impact on the substrate surface. Under specific conditions, the metal powders undergo a severe plastic deformation and adhere to the substrate. In the last decades, the cold spraying of several materials, like copper, aluminium and iron, has been widely explored providing optimal processing windows for a wide range of material pairs. Titanium and its alloys are finding a widespread use in many strategic industries, namely, aeronautic and aerospace field, due to the lightweight, high corrosion resistance and compatibility with polymer-reinforced composites, as well as in the biomedical sector, due to their biocompatibility. However, the high cost of raw materials and the manufacturing issues put severe restrictions to their wider use. On the other hand, replacement of titanium bulk with multilayer material, consisting in a cold sprayed titanium coating on aluminium components, could be a promising alternative and an advantageous trade-off between the cost compression and the higher surface properties of titanium alloy. The present chapter deals with the analysis of the deposition of pure titanium coatings on aluminium alloy substrate by means of low-pressure cold gas spray technique and deals also with the study of the properties of multilayer material. A post-deposition process to further improve the properties of the coating itself was also analysed

    Thrombin-receptor antagonist vorapaxar in acute coronary syndromes

    BACKGROUND Vorapaxar is a new oral protease-activated–receptor 1 (PAR-1) antagonist that inhibits thrombin-induced platelet activation. METHODS In this multinational, double-blind, randomized trial, we compared vorapaxar with placebo in 12,944 patients who had acute coronary syndromes without ST-segment elevation. The primary end point was a composite of death from cardiovascular causes, myocardial infarction, stroke, recurrent ischemia with rehospitalization, or urgent coronary revascularization. RESULTS Follow-up in the trial was terminated early after a safety review. After a median follow-up of 502 days (interquartile range, 349 to 667), the primary end point occurred in 1031 of 6473 patients receiving vorapaxar versus 1102 of 6471 patients receiving placebo (Kaplan–Meier 2-year rate, 18.5% vs. 19.9%; hazard ratio, 0.92; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.85 to 1.01; P = 0.07). A composite of death from cardiovascular causes, myocardial infarction, or stroke occurred in 822 patients in the vorapaxar group versus 910 in the placebo group (14.7% and 16.4%, respectively; hazard ratio, 0.89; 95% CI, 0.81 to 0.98; P = 0.02). Rates of moderate and severe bleeding were 7.2% in the vorapaxar group and 5.2% in the placebo group (hazard ratio, 1.35; 95% CI, 1.16 to 1.58; P<0.001). Intracranial hemorrhage rates were 1.1% and 0.2%, respectively (hazard ratio, 3.39; 95% CI, 1.78 to 6.45; P<0.001). Rates of nonhemorrhagic adverse events were similar in the two groups. CONCLUSIONS In patients with acute coronary syndromes, the addition of vorapaxar to standard therapy did not significantly reduce the primary composite end point but significantly increased the risk of major bleeding, including intracranial hemorrhage
