    Graphitic nanostructures in a porous carbon framework significantly enhance electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

    A hybrid structure, a graphitic nanostructures@porous carbon framework, is developed by utilizing the bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) as a solid precursor, simultaneously templating porous carbon and growing graphitic nanocarbon in a simplified chemical vapor deposition (CVD) fashion. A ligand, 2-methylimidazolate (2MIM), in the ZIF-8 decomposes above 600 °C to yield active carbon/hydrocarbon radicals/vapour. With the idea of using the high catalytic activity of nickel to grow graphitic nanostructures in a CVD process from gaseous carbon feedstocks, a precursor, bimetallic ZIF-8, is synthesized by partial substitution of zinc metal centres by nickel. Such nickel centres thus act as nanocatalysts to grow graphitic nanostructures from the carbon radicals arising from the partly decomposed ligand of the framework during the carbonization step. These hybrid structures show a highly enhanced electrocatalytic activity for the water splitting oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Furthermore the catalytic activity for the oxygen reduction and hydrogen evolution reactions (ORR and HER), and gas uptake capacities for H2 and CO2 are enhanced with respect to the increased porosity and nitrogen doping in the samples. We also show that not all the MOF-based precursors with nickel metal centres are suitable for producing nanographitic structures. Our further investigation suggests that the graphitization in the samples plays a critical role in enhancing the catalytic activities

    Isolation, genotyping and antimicrobial susceptibility of pathogenic Escherichia coli serotypes in ready to eat foods

    NO ABSTRACT AVAILABLEIn this study, pathogenic Escherichia coli serotypes (E. coli O157:H7, O26, O111) and their molecular proximity and antimicrobial susceptibility were investigated in RTE foods. A total of 240 samples; consist of 105 stuffed mussel, 56 meatless cig kofte, 54 Russian salad, 25 cheese halva, were analyzed. The conventional culture and serotyping methods for determination of the organisms were performed and further confirmation by PCR was carried out. Confirmed E. coli O157 isolates were genotyped by the enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus(ERIC)-PCR. Antibacterial susceptibility testing of the isolates was performed by disc diffusion method. E. coli was detected in 7 (2.9 %) of 240 samples, including 3 (5.5%) Russian salad, 3 (2.8%) stuffed mussel, 1 (4 %) cheese halva. Two isolates from Russian salad, 1 from stuffed mussel and 1 from cheese halva were identified as E. coli O157 . In addition, stuffed mussel isolate was found to carry stx1 ve hlyA genes whereas one Russian salad isolate carried the stx1 gene. E. coli isolates were found to be resistant to amoxycillin/clavulonic acid, gentamicin and ciprofloxacin, at the rate of 29%, 14% and 29 %, respectively. Only one (14 %) isolate from stuffed mussel was classified as multidrug resistant to three antimicrobials. Furthermore, the isolates, related to O157 and O157:H7, presented different ribotypes in this study. The results provide useful data for the development of public health policy concerning the potential presence of pathogenic antimicrobial resistant E. coli serotypes in RTE foods. Strict surveillance of RTE foods at retail points for emerging pathogens, their antimicrobial resistance patterns and the potential likelihood of cross-contamination is required

    Design of hyperporous graphene networks and their application in solid-amine based carbon capture systems

    We demonstrate a simple and fully scalable method for obtaining hierarchical hyperporous graphene networks of ultrahigh total pore volume by thermal-shock exfoliation of graphene-oxide (exfGO) at a relatively mild temperature of 300 °C. Such pore volume per unit mass has not previously been achieved in any type of porous solid. We find that the amount of oxidation of starting graphene-oxide is the key factor that determines the pore volume and surface area of the final material after thermal shock. Specifically, we emphasize that the development of the hyperporosity is directly proportional to the enhanced oxidation of sp2 C[double bond, length as m-dash]C to form C[double bond, length as m-dash]O/COO. Using our method, we reproducibly synthesized remarkable meso-/macro-porous graphene networks with exceptionally high total pore volumes, exceeding 6 cm3 g−1. This is a step change compared to ≤3 cm3 g−1 in conventional GO under similar synthetic conditions. Moreover, a record high amine impregnation of >6 g g−1 is readily attained in exfGO samples (solid-amine@exfGO), where amine loading is directly controlled by the pore-structure and volume of the host materials. Such solid-amine@exfGO samples exhibit an ultrahigh selective flue-gas CO2 capture of 30–40 wt% at 75 °C with a working capacity of ≈25 wt% and a very long cycling stability under simulated flue-gas stream conditions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report where a graphene-oxide based hyperporous carbon network is used to host amines for carbon capture application with exceptionally high storage capacity and stability

    Magnetic Excitations of Undoped Iron Oxypnictides

    We study the magnetic excitations of undoped iron oxypnictides using a three-dimensional Heisenberg model with single-ion anisotropy. Analytic forms of the spin wave dispersion, velocities, and structure factor are given. Aside from quantitative comparisons which can be made to inelastic neutron scattering experiments, we also give qualitative criteria which can distinguish various regimes of coupling strength.     Giant infrared intensity of the Peierls mode at the neutral-ionic phase transition

    We present exact diagonalization results on a modified Peierls-Hubbard model for the neutral-ionic phase transition. The ground state potential energy surface and the infrared intensity of the Peierls mode point to a strong, non-linear electron-phonon coupling, with effects that are dominated by the proximity to the electronic instability rather than by electronic correlations. The huge infrared intensity of the Peierls mode at the ferroelectric transition is related to the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant of mixed-stack organic crystals.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
