It is important to have a positive attitude and perceptions towards cultural values, one of the key characteristics students have. It is observed that having a positive attitude towards students with different cultural values contributes to achievement in terms of education. Much of the research has revealed that educators have been found to have a positive attitude towards multicultural education. This study, however, strives to measure and determine the extent and level of the impact of the emotional intelligence efficacy on teachers' multicultural attitudes. The working group is comprised of 315 teachers working in primary schools in two provinces in the Southeast and two in the Marmara Region in 2015 – 2016 academic year. "The Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale (SEIS) ", developed by Schutte et al. (1998) adapted into Turkish language by Cetinkaya and Alparslan (2011), and "Multicultural Attitude Scale", developed by Ponterotto et al.  (1998) adapted into Turkish by Yazici et al. (2009), were used in this research to determine teachers’ emotional intelligence efficacy and multicultural attitudes. The data were analyzed Using SPSS v.17.0 statistical software and Pearson Product-Moment Correlation and Stepwise regression analyzes were performed. The results show that subscales of emotional intelligence have an impact on the teachers’ multicultural attitudes at a significant level. Keywords: Multiculturalism, attitude, emotional intelligence, cultural values, efficacy

Beyond the Classroom: Exploring the Relationship Between Extracurriculars, Social Capital, and Academic Achievement

    Get PDF
This research examines the relationship between extracurriculars, social capital and academic achievement. Sports, music, theaters, clubs, and volunteer work are a few examples of extracurricular activities that take place outside of the traditional academic curriculum and the classroom. Academic achievement is measured in terms of performance in school, whereas social capital refers to the resources and support that individuals can access through their social networks. The considerable amount of literature on the subject has explored the relationship between extracurricular activities, social capital, and academic achievement in many studies. This study reviews and synthesizes the results of previous investigations in order to shed light on the mechanisms and modifiers of this association. The findings suggest that participation in extracurricular activities may have positive effects on social capital and academic achievement, but this relationship is complex and varied and may be modified by a variety of personal and contextual factors. The research concludes with recommendations on how to support higher student outcomes through extracurricular activities for parents, lawmakers, and educators. Does higher education change value perceptions?

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to look at whether higher education has an effect on value perceptions of students. In particular, the researcher will examine the role of 'foundation' or 'private' universities on the priorities of value perceptions. The results are limited to the 115 students participated in the study. In order to have a more generalizable and comprehensive analysis, large number of students from other universities should  also be studied. That way we could have a more convincing claiming about whether university education have negative or positive effects on the change of certain values. However, for the current study we can claim that university education is changing the level of value perceptions of students mostly in negative ways

Today, Americans increasingly concerned about the matter of immigration in the United States. A growing number believe that immigrants are burden to the country, taking jobs and housing and creating strains on the health care system. Many Americans are also worry about the cultural impact of the expanding number of newcomers to the U.S. This paper aims to present a brief but concise discussion by reviewing literature that deals on the development of ethnic identity of first generation immigrants’ students in the U.S. This is a relevant study since the influx of immigrants coming in the U.S. has made great impact on the over-all societal changes

Amyloid Goiter Associated with Amyloidosis Secondary to Rheumatoid Arthritis

    Get PDF
Amyloidosis refers to a variety of conditions in which amyloid proteins are abnormally deposited in organs and/or tissues. The most common forms of systemic amyloidosis are primary amyloidosis (PA) of light chains and secondary amyloidosis (SA) caused by chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Although involvement of the thyroid gland by amyloid is a relatively common phenomenon, clinically significant enlargement of the thyroid owing to amyloid deposition is a rare occurrence. In SA, the deposition of amyloid associated (AA) protein is associated with atrophy of thyroid follicles. The clinical picture of these patients is characterized by rapid, painless thyroid gland enlargement which may be associated with dysphagia, dyspnea, or hoarseness. Thyroid function is not impaired in most cases. Although amyloid goitre secondary to systemic amyloidosis due to chronic inflammatory diseases is relatively common, specifically related to RA is much more uncommon one and it is reported less in the literature. In this report, A 52-old-year female patient with amyloid goiter associated with amyloidosis secondary to rheumatoid arthritis is presented

In the actively deforming region of western Anatolia, crustal deformation is accommodated by destructive earthquakes and a variety of aseismic events. In this study, we investigated the 2016–2017 aseismic sequence located in the Bolvadin Fault, one of the segments of the Akşehir-Simav Fault System of western Anatolia by analysing surface deformation derived from detailed geological mapping. Our findings suggest that surface deformation in the Bolvadin Fault is accommodated by aseismic episodes. During the field studies in the Bolvadin area, progressive surface deformations, such as surface faults and earth fissures with a length of 800 meters to 3 kilometres and strike of N15°E to N70°E were mapped on a 1/5000 scale. Furthermore, a levelling network was established to calculate the vertical displacements and deformation rate along the surface deformations. Precision level measurements were undertaken in 2016 and 2017. On the routes to the NW of the Bolvadin settlement, a vertical deformation rate of 30 mm/yr was detected in the period of 2016–2017, and a large deformation rate of 40 mm/yr was detected in the same period.

5th Cyprus International Conference on Educational Research (CYICER) -- MAR 31-APR 02, 2016 -- Univ Kyrenia, Kyrenia, CYPRUSWOS: 000462228400001The purpose of this paper is to develop new hybrid admission decision prediction models by using Support Vector Machines (SVM) combined with a feature selection algorithm to investigate the effect of the predictor variables on the admission decision of a candidate to the School of of Physical Education and Sports at Cukurova University. Experiments have been conducted on the dataset, which contains data of participants who applied to the School in 2006. The dataset has been randomly split into training and test sets using 10-fold cross validation as well as different percentage ratios. The performance of the prediction models for the datasets has been assessed using classification accuracy, specificity, sensitivity, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV). The results show that a decrease in the number of predictor variables in the prediction models usually leads to a parallel decrease in classification accuracy.Cukurova University Scientific Research Projects CenterCukurova University [FYL-2015-3845]The authors would like to thank Cukurova University Scientific Research Projects Center for supporting this work under grant no. Enhancing Student Learning Through #DigitalPowerups, “Pushed me to be Creative”: Student Discussions in Environmental Sociology Course

    No full text
The use of #digitalpowerups is a technique that involves associating keywords with prompts in online discussion forums, which enables students to have more choice and voice. These powerups not only help structure responses but also enrich discussions and develop academic skills necessary for online assignments. The approach leverages the social media interaction space of discussion forums by introducing hashtags that remind students of the prompt being addressed and indicate the level of Bloom's being engaged. By using the powerups, students can engage in mid-levels and higher-order levels of Bloom's, along with the lower levels that they typically engage in based on the design and facilitation of the discussion. Students typically participate in the lower levels of Bloom's taxonomy (#remember, #understand) due to the way the discussion is structured and facilitated. However, the use of #digitalpowerups encourages students to move beyond these levels and engage in mid-levels (#apply, #analyze, #evaluate) and higher-order levels (#create, #connect) during discussions. The powerups also scaffold or frame student responses with habits of mind skills. This article examines how the #digitalpowerups strategy supports learning in a virtual community for Environmental Concerns in the Environmental Sociology Course through content analysis of student discussion postings. The primary data (total of 375 postings) were collected from the Environmental Sociology Class throughout the following academic years: Fall 2020 (96 postings), Fall 2021 (67 postings), Spring 2022 (92 postings) and Spring 2023 (120 postings).    &nbsp
