Observing two dark accelerators around the Galactic Centre with Fermi Large Area Telescope
We report the results from a detailed ray investigation in the field
of two "dark accelerators", HESS J1745-303 and HESS J1741-302, with years
of data obtained by the Fermi Large Area Telescope. For HESS J1745-303, we
found that its MeV-GeV emission is mainly originated from the "Region A" of the
TeV feature. Its ray spectrum can be modeled with a single power-law
with a photon index of from few hundreds MeV to TeV. Moreover,
an elongated feature, which extends from "Region A" toward northwest for
, is discovered for the first time. The orientation of this
feature is similar to that of a large scale atomic/molecular gas distribution.
For HESS J1741-302, our analysis does not yield any MeV-GeV counterpart for
this unidentified TeV source. On the other hand, we have detected a new point
source, Fermi J1740.1-3013, serendipitously. Its spectrum is apparently curved
which resembles that of a ray pulsar. This makes it possibly
associated with PSR B1737-20 or PSR J1739-3023.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in MNRA
Asymptotic models for the generation of internal waves by a moving ship, and the dead-water phenomenon
This paper deals with the dead-water phenomenon, which occurs when a ship
sails in a stratified fluid, and experiences an important drag due to waves
below the surface. More generally, we study the generation of internal waves by
a disturbance moving at constant speed on top of two layers of fluids of
different densities. Starting from the full Euler equations, we present several
nonlinear asymptotic models, in the long wave regime. These models are
rigorously justified by consistency or convergence results. A careful
theoretical and numerical analysis is then provided, in order to predict the
behavior of the flow and in which situations the dead-water effect appears.Comment: To appear in Nonlinearit
Renormalization Group Study of the A+B->0 Diffusion-Limited Reaction
The diffusion-limited reaction, with equal initial densities
, is studied by means of a field-theoretic renormalization
group formulation of the problem. For dimension an effective theory is
derived, from which the density and correlation functions can be calculated. We
find the density decays in time as a,b \sim C\sqrt{\D}(Dt)^{-d/4} for , with \D = n_0-C^\prime n_0^{d/2} + \dots, where is a universal
constant, and is non-universal. The calculation is extended to the
case of unequal diffusion constants , resulting in a new
amplitude but the same exponent. For a controlled calculation is not
possible, but a heuristic argument is presented that the results above give at
least the leading term in an expansion. Finally, we address
reaction zones formed in the steady-state by opposing currents of and

Double Spin Asymmetries A_NN and A_SS at sqrt{s}=200 GeV in Polarized Proton-Proton Elastic Scattering at RHIC
We present the first measurements of the double spin asymmetries A_NN and
A_SS at sqrt{s}=200 GeV, obtained by the pp2pp experiment using polarized
proton beams at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The data were
collected in the four momentum transfer t range 0.01<|t|<0.03 (GeV/c)^2. The
measured asymmetries, which are consistent with zero, allow us to estimate
upper limits on the double helicity-flip amplitudes phi_2 and phi_4 at small t
as well as on the difference Delta(sigma_T) between the total cross sections
for transversely polarized protons with antiparallel or parallel spin

The kinetic spherical model in a magnetic field
The long-time kinetics of the spherical model in an external magnetic field
and below the equilibrium critical temperature is studied. The solution of the
associated stochastic Langevin equation is reduced exactly to a single
non-linear Volterra equation. For a sufficiently small external field, the
kinetics of the magnetization-reversal transition from the metastable to the
ground state is compared to the ageing behaviour of coarsening systems quenched
into the low-temperature phase. For an oscillating magnetic field and below the
critical temperature, we find evidence for the absence of the
frequency-dependent dynamic phase transition, which was observed previously to
occur in Ising-like systems.Comment: 26 pages, 12 figure
Aging and its Distribution in Coarsening Processes
We investigate the age distribution function P(tau,t) in prototypical
one-dimensional coarsening processes. Here P(tau,t) is the probability density
that in a time interval (0,t) a given site was last crossed by an interface in
the coarsening process at time tau. We determine P(tau,t) analytically for two
cases, the (deterministic) two-velocity ballistic annihilation process, and the
(stochastic) infinite-state Potts model with zero temperature Glauber dynamics.
Surprisingly, we find that in the scaling limit, P(tau,t) is identical for
these two models. We also show that the average age, i. e., the average time
since a site was last visited by an interface, grows linearly with the
observation time t. This latter property is also found in the one-dimensional
Ising model with zero temperature Glauber dynamics. We also discuss briefly the

Prospective Study of Pre-Gravid Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Consumption and the Risk of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus
ObjectiveConsumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) was related to an elevated risk of type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance in several recent studies among middle- or older-aged populations. Studies on SSB consumption and glucose intolerance among pregnant women, however, are lacking. We therefore examined the association between regular SSB consumption before pregnancy and the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).Research design and methodsThis was a prospective study among 13,475 U.S. women who reported at least one singleton pregnancy between 1992 and 2001 in the Nurses' Health Study II. GDM was self-reported and validated by medical record review in a subsample. Cox proportional hazards models with multivariate adjustments were applied to examine the association of SSB consumption with GDM risk.ResultsDuring 10 years of follow-up, 860 incident GDM case subjects were identified. After adjustment for age, parity, race, physical activity, smoking, alcohol intake, prepregnancy BMI, and Western dietary pattern, intake of sugar-sweetened cola was positively associated with the risk of GDM, whereas no significant association was found for other SSBs and diet beverages. Compared with women who consumed <1 serving/month, those who consumed >or=5 servings/week of sugar-sweetened cola had a 22% greater GDM risk (relative risk 1.22 [95% CI 1.01-1.47]).ConclusionsFindings from this study suggest that prepregnancy higher consumption of sugar-sweetened cola (>or=5 servings/week) is associated with an elevated GDM risk, whereas no significant association with GDM risk was observed for other SSBs and diet beverages
Societal emotional environments and cross-cultural differences in life satisfaction: A forty-nine country study
In this paper, we introduce the concept of ‘societal emotional environment’: the emotional climate of a society (operationalized as the degree to which positive and negative emotions are expressed in a society). Using data collected from 12,888 participants across 49 countries, we show how societal emotional environments vary across countries and cultural clusters, and we consider the potential importance of these differences for well-being. Multilevel analyses supported a ‘double-edged sword’ model of negative emotion expression, where expression of negative emotions predicted higher life satisfaction for the expresser but lower life satisfaction for society. In contrast, partial support was found for higher societal life satisfaction in positive societal emotional environments. Our study highlights the potential utility and importance of distinguishing between positive and negative emotion expression, and adopting both individual and societal perspectives in well-being research. Statistical Properties of Turbulence: An Overview
We present an introductory overview of several challenging problems in the
statistical characterisation of turbulence. We provide examples from fluid
turbulence in three and two dimensions, from the turbulent advection of passive
scalars, turbulence in the one-dimensional Burgers equation, and fluid

Particles and fields in fluid turbulence
The understanding of fluid turbulence has considerably progressed in recent
years. The application of the methods of statistical mechanics to the
description of the motion of fluid particles, i.e. to the Lagrangian dynamics,
has led to a new quantitative theory of intermittency in turbulent transport.
The first analytical description of anomalous scaling laws in turbulence has
been obtained. The underlying physical mechanism reveals the role of
statistical integrals of motion in non-equilibrium systems. For turbulent
transport, the statistical conservation laws are hidden in the evolution of
groups of fluid particles and arise from the competition between the expansion
of a group and the change of its geometry. By breaking the scale-invariance
symmetry, the statistically conserved quantities lead to the observed anomalous
scaling of transported fields. Lagrangian methods also shed new light on some
