A new hybrid implicit-explicit FDTD method for local subgridding in multiscale 2-D TE scattering problems

    Get PDF
The conventional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method with staggered Yee scheme does not easily allow including thin material layers, especially so if these layers are highly conductive. This paper proposes a novel subgridding technique for 2-D problems, based on a hybrid implicit-explicit scheme, which efficiently copes with this problem. In the subgrid, the new method collocates field components such that the thin layer boundaries are defined unambiguously. Moreover, aspect ratios of more than a million do not impair the stability of the method and allow for very accurate predictions of the skin effect. The new method retains the Courant limit of the coarse Yee grid and is easily incorporated into existing FDTD codes. A number of illustrative examples, including scattering by a metal grating, demonstrate the accuracy and stability of the new method

    Quasar-galaxy and AGN-galaxy cross-correlations

We compute quasar-galaxy and AGN-galaxy cross-correlation functions for samples taken from the \cite{VCV98} catalog of quasars and active galaxies, using tracer galaxies taken from the Edinburgh/Durham Southern Catalog. The sample of active galaxy targets shows positive correlation at projected separations rp<6h−1Mpcr_p < 6 h^{-1} Mpc consistent with the usual power-law. On the other hand, we do not find a statistically significant positive quasar-galaxy correlation signal except in the range 3h−1Mpc<rp<6h−1Mpc3 h^{-1} Mpc < r_p < 6 h^{-1} Mpc where we find similar AGN-galaxy and quasar-galaxy correlation amplitudes. At separations rp<3h−1Mpcr_p<3 h^{-1} Mpc a strong decline of quasar-galaxy correlations is observed, suggesting a significant local influence of quasars in galaxy formation. In an attempt to reproduce the observed cross-correlation between quasars and galaxies, we have performed CDM cosmological hydrodynamical simulations and tested the viability of a scenario based on the model developed by \cite{silkrees98}. In this scheme a fraction of the energy released by quasars is considered to be transferred into the baryonic component of the intergalactic medium in the form of winds. The results of the simulations suggest that the shape of the observed quasar-galaxy cross-correlation function could be understood in a scenario where a substantial amount of energy is transferred to the medium at the redshift of maximum quasar activity.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures. A Test Of Pre-Main-Sequence Lithium Depletion Models

    Get PDF
Despite the extensive study of lithium depletion during pre-main-sequence (PMS) contraction, studies of individual stars show discrepancies between ages determined from the Hertzsprung-Russell (H-R) diagram and ages determined from lithium depletion, indicating open questions in the PMS evolutionary models. To further test these models, we present high-resolution spectra for members of the beta Pictoris Moving Group (BPMG), which is young and nearby. We measure equivalent widths of the 6707.8 angstrom Li I line in these stars and use them to determine lithium abundances. We combine the lithium abundance with the predictions of PMS evolutionary models in order to calculate a lithium depletion age for each star. We compare this age to the age predicted by the H-R diagram of the same model. We find that the evolutionary models underpredict the amount of lithium depletion for the BPMG given its nominal H-R diagram age of similar to 12 Myr, particularly for the mid-M stars, which have no observable Li I line. This results in systematically older ages calculated from lithium depletion isochrones than from the H-R diagram. We suggest that this discrepancy may be related to the discrepancy between measured M-dwarf radii and the smaller radii predicted by evolutionary models
