Community Based Tourism in Arslanbob and Sary-Moghul, Kyrgyzstan: An Alternative to Labour-Migration?
This research studies the perceptions of Community Based Tourism (CBT) workers towards labour-migration in the two mountainous southern Kyrgyz villages of Sary Moghul and Arslanbob. The qualitative data collected through semi-structured interviews from 28 CBT workers and four key stakeholders reveal four Ideal Types of labour-migration amongst the CBT workers: i) CBT workers who wish to labour-migrate but have yet to have done so; ii) CBT workers who have labour-migrated and returned; iii) CBT workers who are circulatory labour-migrants; and finally iv) CBT workers who have never labour-migrated and currently have no motivation to do so. Qualitative analysis reveals participants from Ideal Type 1 migrating for sociocultural factors, whereas Ideal Types 2 and 3 labour-migrate due to economic factors. Ideal Type 4, a group predominantly composed of individuals with no interest in labour-migration reveals both social and economic factors as the determinants of labour-migration. It is found that in general CBTs have dis-incentivised labour-migration for all the Ideal Types with the exception of Type 4 which by definition does not seek labour- migration. Ideal Type 2 perceives CBTs dis-incentivising labour-migration both socially as well as economically, whereas Ideal Types 1 and 3 perceive the CBTs as dis-incentivising labour-migration purely socially
Laser-Assisted High Speed Machining of 316 Stainless Steel: The Effect of Water-Soluble Sago Starch Based Cutting Fluid on Surface Roughness and Tool Wear
Laser-assisted high speed milling is a subtractive machining method that employs a laser
to thermally soften a difficult-to-cut material’s surface in order to enhance machinability at a high
material removal rate with improved surface finish and tool life. However, this machining with
high speed leads to high friction between workpiece and tool, and can result in high temperatures,
impairing the surface quality. Use of conventional cutting fluid may not effectively control the heat
generation. Besides, vegetable-based cutting fluids are invariably a major source of food insecurity of
edible oils which is traditionally used as a staple food in many countries. Thus, the primary objective
of this study is to experimentally investigate the effects of water-soluble sago starch-based cutting
fluid on surface roughness and tool’s flank wear using response surface methodology (RSM) while
machining of 316 stainless steel. In order to observe the comparison, the experiments with same
machining parameters are conducted with conventional cutting fluid. The prepared water-soluble
sago starch based cutting fluid showed excellent cooling and lubricating performance. Therefore,
in comparison to the machining using conventional cutting fluid, a decrease of 48.23% in surface
roughness and 38.41% in flank wear were noted using presented approach. Furthermore, using the
extreme learning machine (ELM), the obtained data is modeled to predict surface roughness and
flank wear and showed good agreement between observations and predictions
The impact of information and communication technology on retail property in Malaysia
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of using information and communication technology (ICT) on retail property in Malaysia. It also examines what listed property companies perceive in terms of the implications of using ICT in the retail property sector in Malaysia. Design/methodology/approach: Data were collected from sample surveys completed by 79 property companies listed on the Bursa Malaysia (formerly known as the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange). An ICT retail impact matrix was then developed to assess the significance of ICT on retail property in Malaysia. Findings: The findings of the study revealed that ICT would have only a minor impact on retail property in Malaysia and that there would still be a need for the traditional means of conducting a retail property business. It also found that the listed property companies were ready to implement ICT applications and that the demand for retail property would still increase in Malaysia in the future. Research limitations/implications: Only 66 percent of listed property companies in Malaysia (the respondents) participated in the study. Originality/value: This paper seeks to look at the impact ICT has on retail property in Malaysia. For this purpose, an ICT retail impact matrix was developed to assess this impact. As such, this study will be used as a benchmark for future ICT studies relating to retail property and the real estate sector in Malaysia

Sustainable property development by Malaysian property companies
Purpose – The concept of sustainability has become increasingly essential to property development, especially in recent years. The purpose of this paper is to assess the level of sustainability practices among listed property companies in Malaysia. Design/methodology/approach – Using content analysis, company websites and annual reports, the level of sustainable practices among property companies in Malaysia will be examined and assessed. The paper will also rigorously assess the sustainability strategies employed by using an attributes scorecard, which takes into account several attributes concerning sustainability issues. Findings – The findings have showed sustainable property development concept among listed property companies can be categorised as low level, although this is increasing. Originality/value – Given the increasing significance of sustainability issues – especially in property development – this paper provides a more informed investment decision strategies regarding the implementation of the sustainability concept in property portfolio; a consideration that has increasingly come into focus amongst international property actors
