    COVID-19 vaccinations: summary guidance for Cancer patients in 28Languages: breaking barriers to Cancer patient Information

    Background: Covid-19 vaccination has started in the majority of the countries at the global level. Cancer patients are at high risk for infection, serious illness, and death from COVID-19 and need vaccination guidance and support. Guidance availability in the English language only is a major limit for recommendations' delivery and their application in the world's population and generates information inequalities across the different populations. Methods: Most of the available COVID-19 vaccination guidance for cancer patients was screened and scrutinized by the European Cancer Patients Coalition (ECPC) and an international oncology panel of 52 physicians from 33 countries. Results: A summary guidance was developed and provided in 28 languages in order to reach more than 70 percent of the global population. Conclusion: Language barrier and e-guidance availability in the native language are the most important barriers when communicating with patients. E-guidance availability in various native languages should be considered a major priority by international medical and health organizations that are communicating with patients at the global level.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    The poultry industry is the fastest-growing agricultural sector globally. With poultry meat being economical and in high demand, the end product’s safety is of importance. Globally, governments are coming together to ban the use of antibiotics as prophylaxis and for growth promotion in poultry. Salmonella and Clostridium perfringens are two leading pathogens that cause foodborne illnesses and are linked explicitly to poultry products. Furthermore, numerous outbreaks occur every year. A substitute for antibiotics is required by the industry to maintain the same productivity level and, hence, profits. We aimed to isolate and identify potential probiotic strains from the ceca mucosa of the chicken intestinal tract with bacteriocinogenic properties. We were able to isolate multiple and diverse strains, including a new uncultured bacterium, with inhibitory activity against Salmonella Typhimurium ATCC 14028, Salmonella Abony NCTC 6017, Salmonella Choleraesuis ATCC 10708, Clostridium perfringens ATCC 13124, and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922. The five most potent strains were further characterized for their probiotic potential (i.e., sensitivity to antibiotics and tolerance to gastrointestinal physicochemical conditions). Our analyzed lactobacilli strains exhibited some interesting probiotic features while being inhibitory against targeted pathogens

    Evidence of the Dysbiotic Effect of Psychotropics on Gut Microbiota and Capacity of Probiotics to Alleviate Related Dysbiosis in a Model of the Human Colon

    Growing evidence indicates that non-antibiotic therapeutics significantly impact human health by modulating gut microbiome composition and metabolism. In this study, we investigated the impact of two psychotropic drugs, aripiprazole and (S)-citalopram, on gut microbiome composition and its metabolic activity, as well as the potential of probiotics to attenuate related dysbiosis using an ex vivo model of the human colon. After 48 h of fermentation, the two psychotropics demonstrated distinct modulatory effects on the gut microbiome. Aripiprazole, at the phylum level, significantly decreased the relative abundances of Firmicutes and Actinobacteria, while increasing the proportion of Proteobacteria. Moreover, the families Lachnospiraceae, Lactobacillaceae, and Erysipelotrichaceae were also reduced by aripiprazole treatment compared to the control group. In addition, aripiprazole lowered the levels of butyrate, propionate, and acetate, as measured by gas chromatography (GC). On the other hand, (S)-citalopram increased the alpha diversity of microbial taxa, with no differences observed between groups at the family and genus level. Furthermore, a probiotic combination of Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus HA-114 and Bifidobacterium longum R0175 alleviated gut microbiome alterations and increased the production of short-chain fatty acids to a similar level as the control. These findings provide compelling evidence that psychotropics modulate the composition and function of the gut microbiome, while the probiotic can mitigate related dysbiosis

    Newly isolated lactobacilli strains from algerian human vaginal microbiota: lactobacillus fermentum strains relevant probiotic's candidates

    International audienceLactobacilli strains are considered as a preventive means for treatment of vaginal infections or post-antibiotic treatment to repopulate the vaginal mucosa. This study aimed at establishing the vaginal lactobacillus profile of Algerian women with different vaginal diseases. Afterwards, lactobacilli isolated from swabs were in vitro characterized for their probiotic hallmarks. This prospective study allowed isolation of 44 Lactobacillus strains and 160 potentially pathogens, among which are Escherichia coli (50 isolates), Staphylococcus sp. (38 isolates), Enterococcus sp. (16 isolates), and Candida sp. (56 isolates). All Lactobacilli strains were characterized for their antagonism, adhesion to polystyrene, and resistance to acidity and bile. Consequently, six Lactobacillus strains (Lb. fermentum 5LB4, 5LB10, 5LB12, Lb. plantarum 5LB2, 5LB11, and Lactobacillus sp. 4LB9) were moderately or weakly adherent, and 35 potentially pathogens exhibited weak to strong adhesion to polystyrene. Antagonism was recorded for 36 Lactobacillus strains towards E. coli 6E2, S. aureus 7S3, Enterococcus sp. 5EN8, and Candida albicans C1 used as indicator organisms. Finally, Lb. fermentum 9LB6, 4LB16, and 10LB1 and Lb. plantarum 9LB4 were remarkable for their inhibitory activity, absence of hemolytic potential, and for their resistance to acidity (pH1.5) and bile (0.5%) harsh conditions

    Simulated gastrointestinal digestion and in vitro colonic fermentation of carob polyphenols: Bioaccessibility and bioactivity

    Carob is a well-known tree for its nutritional and health-promoting edible pods due to its high phenolic contents. It was aimed to investigate: 1) carob phenolic profiles; soluble free, soluble conjugated and bound, 2) bioaccesibility of those phenolics during simulated gastrointestinal digestions, plus in vitro fecal fermentations, 3) their antioxidant properties, also 4) α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities. Ten phenolic acids and six flavonoids were detected in soluble (free and conjugated) and insoluble fractions of undigested carob. After in vitro gastrointestinal digestions, the most bioaccessible phenolic acids and flavonoids were gallic acid (647.4%), chlorogenic acid (485.4%), (+)-catechin (558.3%) and rutin (267.2%). Myricetin (79.5%) and gallic acid (20.0%) were the most abundant metabolites of residual fraction of carob phenolics after fecal fermentations. Antioxidant capacity of digested carob has increased significantly (p < 0.05); DPPH (107 mg GAE/g), ABTS (399 mg TE/g) and ORAC (415 μmol TE/g). Both undigested carob and its digested fractions showed a positive dose-dependent inhibition of α-amylase activity (0.3–1.0 mg/mL). The findings from this study showed first time report on carob phenolic profiles (soluble and insoluble) and their bioaccessibility during digestions and fecal fermentations. Carob phenolic might influence glucose metabolism by inhibiting carbohydrate digestion
