The roots of healing: ethnomedical adaptation of the Ohlone Indians

Western medical specialists attempt to treat pathological phenomena by using synthetic drugs. These synthetic drugs can be costly and time consuming to manufacture, distribute and prescribe. Only recently has the mainstream medical community begun to acknowledge the possible benefits of traditional medicinal curing, much of which utilizes inexpensive organic compounds for treatments. Furthermore, native peoples throughout the world have an extensive knowledge of disease and of disease treatment (Vogel 1970, Densmore 1974, Margolin 1978, Heizer and Elsasser 1980). Relying on centuries of botanical experimentation, native peoples have been able to treat a vast number of medical ailments utilizing floral and fauna) species (Vogel 1970, Bocek 1984, Heizer and Elsasser 1980) . Some systems of traditional medicine have received much public attention in recent years. Chinese traditional medicine and indigenous peoples\u27 traditional medicine represent two noteworthy examples. Certain medical authorities have made the observation that traditional medicines can offer valuable treatments of certain pathological ailments for which \u27western\u27 medicine can do very little (Manning 1981, Liu 1989). This study investigates Ohlone medicinal treatments in the broader sociocultural context of Ohlone health, disease and healing. Like many of the cultures of California, the Ohlone had various methods of resolving issues of pain and of disease. Through both shamanistic-ritual treatments and floral treatments, the Ohlone maintained both their mental and physical health (Margolin 1978, Heizer and Elsasser 1980, Bean 1991). Understanding Ohlone healing may be valuable to pharmaceutical researchers, to the medical community and, ultimately, to those in society who suffer from various pathologies. Furthermore, understanding traditional medicine is important for indigenous peoples in terms of understanding their past. In the following chapters, I first discuss the geography (Chapter 2) and social organization (Chapter 3) of the Ohlone. It is critical to understand the physical environment in which the Ohlone lived when attempting to understand the ethnomedical relationships which the Ohlone had with their surroundings. Next, I present an overview of the cultural position of the shaman in Ohlone society (Chapter 4), before examining in detail their use of medicinal plants for curing (Chapt er 5). Since Ohlone culture was dramatically transformed by its confrontation with the Spanish mission system, I explore both changes and continuity of this period of the latter eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries (Chapter 6). Here, I am particularly concerned with the impact of new disease on the Ohlone and the evidence of persistent healing traditions. Finally, I close by examining the revitalization of Ohlone culture, and healing traditions, through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to the present (Chapters 7 and 8)

Resiliency is an important characteristic of successful therapists (Aponte, 1991; Aponte & Carlsen, 2009; Aponte & Winter, 2000; Clark, 2009; Hamel & Laraway, 2004; Kuiper, 2012; Protinsky & Coward, 2001; Rosenburg & Pace, 2006; Wolgien & Coady, 1997), especially those in entry-level positions that tend to involve high stress and turnover (Acker, 2004; Clark, 2009; Davis, 2013; Greenson, Guo, Barth, Harley, & Sission, 2009; Grosch & Olsen, 1994; Gupta, Peterson, Lysaght, & Zweck, 2012; Horan, 2002; Maslach & Leiter, 1997; Negash & Sahin, 2011; Rosenburg &Pace, 2006; Skovolt &Trotter Mathison, 2011). This study explored the perspectives of six therapists providing in home services in community based agencies who succeeded and thrived in entry-level positions. The researcher inquired about how the therapists defined and maintained necessary resiliency. The participating therapists were recommended by their agency directors for their exemplary performance; they defined themselves as succeeding and thriving. The researcher used the qualitative research method of phenomenology (Kafle, 2011) to examine the participants’ lived experiences. The researcher derived five primary themes from the thematic analysis of the interviews: (1) In-home therapists should enjoy the freedom of their jobs; (2) In-home therapists should schedule their time creatively; (3) In-home therapists should understand the unique needs of their clientele; (4) In-home therapists should practice self-care; and (5) In-home therapists should vary their clientele. These themes represent methods by which the participants manage to become successful in-home therapists and prevent burnout

Identity Integration as a Protective Factor against Guilt and Shame for Religious Gay Men

Belonging to multiple identities that are incompatible has been linked to poor psychological wellbeing outcomes, including feelings of guilt and shame. Individuals who experience such conflict can use a range of strategies to reconcile seemingly incompatible identities. The current study aimed to explore the strategy of identity integration as a protective factor against guilt and shame for individuals who identify as both religious and gay. A sample of 183 religious gay men (M age = 29.31 years, SD = 10.42) completed an online survey comprising measures of religious identification, gay identification, guilt, shame, and identity integration. We found that religious identification predicted higher levels of religious-based guilt, and both gay identity-based guilt and shame. Conversely, gay identification was not associated with any feelings of guilt or shame. Identity integration predicted lower levels of all guilt and shame outcomes, and also moderated the relationship between religious identification and guilt and shame–that is, religious-gay identity integration attenuated the negative effects independently associated with religious identification. These findings suggest that identity integration may enable gay people to access the protective benefits of religious engagement and multiple group memberships while remaining connected to the gay community

Background: Plate on plate technique can lessen operative time and patient morbidity. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of minimally invasive percutaneous plate osteosynthesis (MIPPO) using plate on plate technique of locking plate fixation for closed fractures of distal tibia in a prospective study. Patients and Methods: Twenty-five patients with distal tibial fractures were treated by MIPPO using locking plate by plate on plate technique. Preoperative variables including age of patient, mode of trauma, type of fracture and soft tissue status were recorded for each patient. Perioperative variables included surgical time and radiation exposure. Postoperative variables included wound status, time to union, return to activity and the American orthopaedic foot and ankle score (AOFAS). Results: All the fractures had united at one year. The average time to union was 16.8 weeks. There were two cases of superficial infection and two cases of deep infection, which required removal of hardware after the fracture was united. The average AO foot and ankle score was 83.6 in our study population. Conclusions: MIPPO using locking plate by plate on plate technique was a safe, effective, inexpensive and easily reproducible method for the treatment of distal tibial fractures in properly selected patients, which minimized operative time and soft tissue morbidity

The number of dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) incidence in Pekalongan from year to year is very volatile. In 2006, there was 352 cases, 718 cases occurred in 2007, 2008 saw 403 cases, 2009 there were 753 cases, whereas in 2010 a decline to 223 cases. This is possible due to the lack of information about the place, time and location of the incident spread of dengue in Pekalongan. Various efforts have been made to address these issues both society and government but the incidence of this disease has not been effectively suppressed. The results of data analysis showed that the incidence of dengue in Pekalongan mostly occurs during the rainy season is the period from January to June. The DHF incidence tends to be higher in Kedungwuni. Highest incidence of DHF occurred in April 2010. In addition, there are some months that indicate the spatial relationships in the incidence of dengue in Pekalongan, ie January, February, July, October and December. The sub-district that has a positive autocorrelation is Kedungwuni, Wonopringgo, and Tirto. While the sub-district has a negative autocorrelation is Karangdadap.
