    Parenting styles as a moderator of the association between pubertal timing and chinese adolescents’ drinking behavior

    Background: Pubertal timing refers to the timing of an individual regarding pubertal sexual maturation, both physiologically and psychologically. Existing research shows that pubertal timing is associated with behavioral problems. This study investigated the role of parenting style in the relationship between pubertal timing and Chinese adolescents’ smoking behavior. Methods: The study examined the association of pubertal timing, parenting style and adolescents’ smoking behavior, using the Pubertal Development Scale (Chinese version), Simplified Parenting Style Scale-Chinese version, and three items related to adolescents’ smoking situation. Participants were 1391 Chinese adolescents aged 11–16 years old (53.41% boys). Hierarchical linear regression analyses assessed the moderating role of parenting style on the association between pubertal timing and adolescent smoking behavior. Results: The results indicated that parenting style moderates the relationship between pubertal timing and adolescent smoking behavior. For male adolescents, father rejection moderated the relationship between early pubertal timing and smoking behavior. For female adolescents, father rejection, father emotional warmth, and mother emotional warmth moderated the relationship between pubertal timing and smoking behavior. Conclusions: Findings from the study highlight the importance of parenting style, which may influence the negative outcomes associated with early pubertal timing and can help improve interventions aimed at reducing these negative outcomes

    Why Is Maternal Control Harmful? The Relation between Maternal Control, Insecure Attachment and Antisocial Personality Disorder Features in Chinese College Students:A Sequential Mediation Model

    Background: Previous work has indicated that a negative parenting style is associated with antisocial personality disorder features in Chinese college students, yet few studies have explored the unique role of negative mothering in children’s antisocial personality disorder. Methods: The current study mainly examined the sequential mediation effect of parental antipathy and neglect (PAN) and mother negative loving (a form of insecure attachment) in the association between mother control and adulthood antisocial personality disorder features (ASPD features) in the framework of attachment theory and cognitive–behavioral theory. A community sample of 1547 Chinese college students filled in the Parental Bonding Instrument, the Childhood Experience of Care and Abuse Questionnaire, the Adult Attachment Questionnaire and the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-4+. Results: A sequential mediation model analysis showed that maternal control significantly predicted PAN, mother negative loving, as well as ASPD features. Conclusions: Mother control and mother negative loving appear to advance on the development and exacerbation of ASPD features in college students

    In situ synthesis of exopolysaccharides by Leuconostoc spp. and Weissella spp. and their rheological impacts in fava bean flour

    Fava bean flour is regarded as a potential plant-based protein source, but the addition of it at high concentration is restricted by its poor texture-improving ability and by anti-nutritional factors (ANF). Exopolysaccharides (EPS) produced by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are regarded as good texture modifiers. In this study, fava bean flour was fermented with Leuconostoc spp. and Weissella spp. with or without sucrose addition, in order to evaluate their potential in EPS production. The contents of free sugars, organic acids, mannitol and EPS in all fermented fava bean doughs were measured. Rheological properties of sucrose-enriched doughs, including viscosity flow curves, hysteresis loop and dynamic oscillatory sweep curves, were measured after fermentation. As one of the ANF, the degradation of raffinose family oligosaccharides (RFO) was also studied by analyzing RFO profiles of different doughs. Quantification of EPS revealed the potential of Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides DSM 20193 in EPS production, and the rheological analysis showed that the polymers produced by this strain has the highest thickening and gelling capability. Furthermore, the viscous fava bean doughs containing plant proteins and synthesized in situ EPS may have a potential application in the food industry and fulfill consumers' increasing demands for "clean labels" and plant-originated food materials.     Seasonality of the Transpiration Fraction and Its Controls Across Typical Ecosystems Within the Heihe River Basin

    Understanding the seasonality of the transpiration fraction (T/ET) of total terrestrial evapotranspiration (ET) is vital for coupling ecological and hydrological systems and quantifying the heterogeneity among various ecosystems. In this study, a two‐source model was used to estimate T/ET in five ecosystems over the Heihe River Basin. In situ measurements of daily energy flux, sap flow, and surface soil temperature were compared with model outputs for 2014 and 2015. Agreement between model predictions and observations demonstrates good performance in capturing the ecosystem seasonality of T/ET. In addition, sensitivity analysis indicated that the model is insensitive to errors in measured input variables and parameters. T/ET among the five sites showed only slight interannual fluctuations while exhibited significant seasonality. All the ecosystems presented a single‐peak trend, reaching the maximum value in July and fluctuating day to day. During the growing season, average T/ET was the highest for the cropland ecosystem (0.80 ± 0.13), followed by the alpine meadow ecosystem (0.79 ± 0.12), the desert riparian forest Populus euphratica (0.67 ± 0.07), the Tamarix ramosissima Ledeb desert riparian shrub ecosystem (0.67 ± 0.06), and the alpine swamp meadow (0.55 ± 0.23). Leaf area index exerted a first‐order control on T/ET and showed divergence among the five ecosystems because of different vegetation dynamics and environmental conditions (e.g., water availability or vapor pressure deficits).     Mixed Eucalyptus plantations in subtropical China enhance phosphorus accumulation and transformation in soil aggregates

    IntroductionThe production of Eucalyptus, a principal economic tree genus in China, is faced with challenges related to soil phosphorus (P) limitations. In this study, we explore variations in phosphorus content, storage, and transformation in Eucalyptus forests. We hypothesize that mixed forests augment soil aggregate stability and P content and that microaggregates are pivotal in determining P differences between mixed and pure forests. Additionally, we posit that mixed forests foster P transformation, enhancing its efficacy in the soil. Current research on the distribution and transformation of soil total P (TP) and P fractions at the soil aggregate level is limited.MethodsIn this study, we selected soil from a Eucalyptus-Mytilaria laosensis Lecomte mixed forest, Eucalyptus-Erythrophleum fordii Oliv mixed forest, and pure Eucalyptus forest in Chongzuo County, Guangxi, China, as the research objects. Using a dry-sieving method, we divided the soil collected in situ from the 0–40 cm layer into aggregates of >2, 1–2, 0.25–1, and <0.25 mm particle sizes, measured the TP and P fractions (resin-extractable inorganic P, bicarbonate-extractable inorganic P, bicarbonate-extractable organic P, sodium hydroxide-extractable inorganic P, sodium hydroxide-extractable organic P, dilute hydrochloric acid-extractable P, concentrated hydrochloric acid extractable inorganic P, concentrated hydrochloric acid-extractable organic P and residue-P) in different aggregates, and used redundancy analysis and PLS SEM to reveal key factors affecting soil P accumulation and transformation.ResultsThe results showed that compared to pure Eucalyptus forests, mixed Eucalyptus forests significantly enhanced the stability of soil aggregates and the content and storage of phosphorus, especially the Eucalyptus-Mytilaria laosensis mixed forest. The content of total soil phosphorus and its fractions decreased with increasing aggregate particle size, while the opposite trend was observed for stored P, with aggregates <0.25 mm being the main fraction influencing soil phosphorus accumulation. The transformation process of P fractions was primarily constrained by dissolution rates, mineralization rates, biological activity, including the action of microbes, fungi, and plant–root interactions, and other factors.DiscussionMixed forests increased the transformation of phosphorus in soil aggregates, effectivel enhancing the availability of soil phosphorus. In summary, this study provides important evidence for the systematic management of subtropical artificia Eucalyptus forests and the sustainable utilization of soil resources

    FGL2 deficiency alleviates maternal inflammation-induced blood-brain barrier damage by blocking PI3K/NF-ÎșB mediated endothelial oxidative stress

    IntroductionThe impairment of blood-brain barrier (BBB) is one of the key contributors to maternal inflammation induced brain damage in offspring. Our previous studies showed Fibrinogen-like protein 2 (FGL2) deficiency alleviated maternal inflammation induced perinatal brain damage. However, its role in BBB remains undefined.MethodsLipopolysaccharide (LPS) was intraperitoneally injected to dams at Embryonic day 17 to establish maternal inflammation model. FGL2 knockout mice and primary brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMECs) were used for the in-vivo and in-vitro experiments. BBB integrity was assessed by sodium fluorescein extravasation and tight junction (TJ) protein expression. Oxidative stress and the activation of PI3K/NF-ÎșB pathway were evaluated to explore the mechanisms underlying.ResultsUpon maternal inflammation, BBB integrity was remarkedly reduced in neonatal mice. Meanwhile, FGL2 expression was consistently increased in BBB-impaired brain as well as in LPS-treated BMECs. Moreover, FGL2 deficiency attenuated the hyperpermeability of BBB, prevented the decline of TJ proteins, and reduced the cytokine expressions in LPS-exposed pups. Mechanistically, the indicators of oxidative stress, as well as the activation of PI3K/NF-ÎșB pathway, were upregulated after LPS exposure in vivo and in vitro. FGL2 deletion decreased the generation of ROS and NO, reduced the endothelial iNOS and NOX2 expressions, and suppressed the PI3K/NF-ÎșB pathway activation. Besides, inhibition of PI3K by LY294002 decreased the oxidative stress in LPS-treated wild-type BMECs. While, overexpression of PI3K by lentivirus reemerged the induction of NOX2 and iNOS as well as NF-ÎșB activation in FGL2-deleted BMECs.ConclusionOur findings indicate that FGL2 deficiency alleviates the maternal inflammation-induced BBB disruption by inhibiting PI3K/NF-ÎșB mediated oxidative stress in BMECs. Targeting FGL2 may provide a new therapy for prenatal brain damage of offspring

    Constructing prediction models for excessive daytime sleepiness by nomogram and machine learning: A large Chinese multicenter cohort study

    ObjectiveAlthough risk factors for excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) have been reported, there are still few cohort-based predictive models for EDS in Parkinson’s disease (PD). This 1-year longitudinal study aimed to develop a predictive model of EDS in patients with PD using a nomogram and machine learning (ML).Materials and methodsA total of 995 patients with PD without EDS were included, and clinical data during the baseline period were recorded, which included basic information as well as motor and non-motor symptoms. One year later, the presence of EDS in this population was re-evaluated. First, the baseline characteristics of patients with PD with or without EDS were analyzed. Furthermore, a Cox proportional risk regression model and XGBoost ML were used to construct a prediction model of EDS in PD.ResultsAt the 1-year follow-up, EDS occurred in 260 of 995 patients with PD (26.13%). Baseline features analysis showed that EDS correlated significantly with age, age of onset (AOO), hypertension, freezing of gait (FOG). In the Cox proportional risk regression model, we included high body mass index (BMI), late AOO, low motor score on the 39-item Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire (PDQ-39), low orientation score on the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and absence of FOG. Kaplan–Meier survival curves showed that the survival prognosis of patients with PD in the high-risk group was significantly worse than that in the low-risk group. XGBoost demonstrated that BMI, AOO, PDQ-39 motor score, MMSE orientation score, and FOG contributed to the model to different degrees, in decreasing order of importance, and the overall accuracy of the model was 71.86% after testing.ConclusionIn this study, we showed that risk factors for EDS in patients with PD include high BMI, late AOO, a low motor score of PDQ-39, low orientation score of MMSE, and lack of FOG, and their importance decreased in turn. Our model can predict EDS in PD with relative effectivity and accuracy
