A Three-Way Decision Approach to Email Spam Filtering

Abstract. Many classification techniques used for identifying spam emails, treat spam filtering as a binary classification problem. That is, the in-coming email is either spam or non-spam. This treatment is more for mathematical simplicity other than reflecting the true state of nature. In this paper, we introduce a three-way decision approach to spam filtering based on Bayesian decision theory, which provides a more sensible feed-back to users for precautionary handling their incoming emails, thereby reduces the chances of misclassification. The main advantage of our ap-proach is that it allows the possibility of rejection, i.e., of refusing to make a decision. The undecided cases must be re-examined by collect-ing additional information. A loss function is defined to state how costly each action is, a pair of threshold values on the posterior odds ratio is systematically calculated based on the loss function, and the final deci-sion is to select the action for which the overall cost is minimum. Our experimental results show that the new approach reduces the error rate of classifying a legitimate email to spam, and provides better spam pre-cision and weighted accuracy. Key words: spam filter, three-way decision, naive Bayesian classifica-tion, Bayesian decision theory, cost

Form Factors in the radiative pion decay

    Get PDF
We perform an analysis of the form factors that rule the structure-dependent amplitude in the radiative pion decay. The resonance contributions to pion -> e nu_e gamma decays are computed through the proper construction of the vector and axial-vector form factors by setting the QCD driven asymptotic properties of the three-point Green functions VVP and VAP, and by demanding the smoothing of the form factors at high transfer of momentum. A comparison between theoretical and experimental determinations of the form factors is also carried out. We also consider and evaluate the role played by a non-standard tensor form factor. We conclude that, at present and due to the hadronic incertitudes, the search for New Physics in this process is not feasible.Comment: 14 pages, no figures. Typos corrected. Transformation of β-Ni(OH)2to NiO nano-sheets via surface nanocrystalline zirconia coating: Shape and size retention

    Get PDF
Shape and size of the synthesized NiO nano-sheets were retained during transformation of sheet-like β-Ni(OH)2to NiO at elevated temperatures via nano-sized zirconia coating on the surface of β-Ni(OH)2. The average grain size was 6.42 nm after 600 °C treatment and slightly increased to 10 nm after 1000 °C treatment, showing effective sintering retardation between NiO nano-sheets. The excellent thermal stability revealed potential application at elevated temperatures, especially for high temperature catalysts and solid-state electrochemical devices

Weak decays of J/ψJ/\psi: the non-leptonic case

In our previous study, we calculated the transition from factors of J/ψD(s)()J/\psi\to D^{(*)}_{(s)} using the QCD sum rules. Based on the factorization approximation, the obtained form factors can be applied to evaluate the weak non-leptonic decay rates of J/ψD(s)()+MJ/\psi\to D^{(*)}_{(s)}+M, where MM stands for a light pseudoscalar or vector meson. We predict that the branching ratio for inclusive non-leptonic two-body weak decays of J/ψJ/\psi which are realized via the spectator mechanism, can be as large as 1.3×1081.3 \times 10^{-8}, in particular, the branching ratio of J/ψDs±+ρJ/\psi\to D^{*\pm}_s+\rho^\mp can reach 5.3×1095.3 \times 10^{-9}. Such values will be marginally accessed by the ability of BESIII which will begin running very soon.Comment: 16 pages, revTex4, 1 figur

Au+Au Reactions at the AGS: Experiments E866 and E917

Particle production and correlation functions from Au+Au reactions have been measured as a function of both beam energy (2-10.7AGeV) and impact parameter. These results are used to probe the dynamics of heavy-ion reactions, confront hadronic models over a wide range of conditions and to search for the onset of new phenomena.Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures, Talk presented at Quark Matter '9

The transition form factors for semi-leptonic weak decays of J/ψJ/\psi in QCD sum rules

Within the Standard Model, we investigate the semi-leptonic weak decays of J/ψJ/\psi. The various form factors of J/ψJ/\psi transiting to a single charmed meson (D(d,s)()D^{(*)}_{(d,s)}) are studied in the framework of the QCD sum rules. These form factors fully determine the rates of the weak semi-leptonic decays of J/ψJ/\psi and provide valuable information about the non-perturbative QCD effects. Our results indicate that the decay rate of the semi-leptonic weak decay mode J/ψDs()+e++νeJ/\psi \to D^{(*)-}_{s}+e^{+}+\nu_{e} is at order of 101010^{-10}.Comment: 28 pages, 6 figures, revised version to be published in Eur.Phys.J.

    Partial wave analysis of J/\psi \to \gamma \phi \phi

    Using 5.8×107J/ψ5.8 \times 10^7 J/\psi events collected in the BESII detector, the radiative decay J/ψγϕϕγK+KKS0KL0J/\psi \to \gamma \phi \phi \to \gamma K^+ K^- K^0_S K^0_L is studied. The ϕϕ\phi\phi invariant mass distribution exhibits a near-threshold enhancement that peaks around 2.24 GeV/c2c^{2}. A partial wave analysis shows that the structure is dominated by a 0+0^{-+} state (η(2225)\eta(2225)) with a mass of 2.240.02+0.030.02+0.032.24^{+0.03}_{-0.02}{}^{+0.03}_{-0.02} GeV/c2c^{2} and a width of 0.19±0.030.04+0.060.19 \pm 0.03^{+0.06}_{-0.04} GeV/c2c^{2}. The product branching fraction is: Br(J/ψγη(2225))Br(η(2225)ϕϕ)=(4.4±0.4±0.8)×104Br(J/\psi \to \gamma \eta(2225))\cdot Br(\eta(2225)\to \phi\phi) = (4.4 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.8)\times 10^{-4}.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures. corrected proof for journa
