Fabrication of periodic nanostructures using AFM tip-based nanomachining: combining groove and material pile-Up topographies

    Get PDF
This paper presents an atomic force microscopy (AFM) tip-based nanomachining method to fabricate periodic nanostructures. This method relies on combining the topography generated by machined grooves with the topography resulting from accumulated pile-up material on the side of these grooves. It is shown that controlling the distance between adjacent and parallel grooves is the key factor in ensuring the quality of the resulting nanostructures. The presented experimental data show that periodic patterns with good quality can be achieved when the feed value between adjacent scratching paths is equal to the width between the two peaks of material pile-up on the sides of a single groove. The quality of the periodicity of the obtained nanostructures is evaluated by applying one- and two-dimensional fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithms. The ratio of the area of the peak part to the total area in the normalized amplitude–frequency characteristic diagram of the cross-section of the measured AFM image is employed to quantitatively analyze the periodic nanostructures. Finally, the optical effect induced by the use of machined periodic nanostructures for surface colorization is investigated for potential applications in the fields of anti-counterfeiting and metal sensing

Placement Distance of Exit Advance Guide Sign on an Eight-Lane Expressway Considering Lane Changing Behaviour in China

The reasonable placement of the advance guide signs (AGSs) is important in improving driving efficiency and safety when exiting an expressway. By analysing the lane-changing process when approaching an exit on new two-way eight-lane expressways, we modified the tradi-tional AGS model lane-change distance formula. To this end, a field experiment was designed to explore the lane-change traversal time at the free flow condition (LOS 1). Considering the limitations of the experimental equip-ment, lane change distance at the worst levels of service was explored using VISSIM simulation. The results show that the eight-lane changing distance based on modified theoretical calculations, revealed a minor difference with VISSIM simulation in free flow condition. Further-more, placement distance at the worst levels of service are discussed. Then placement distance of all-level AGSs is recommended to be 3 km, 2 km, 1.2 km, and 0.8 km, considering the driver\u27s short-term memory attenuation calculation formula. Determining the two-way eight-lane AGS placement distance from the perspective of LOS can provide a basis on which to supplement the existing stan-dards and references for the AGS placement distance af-ter the expressway expansion in China

Berberine Improves Glucose Homeostasis in Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats in Association with Multiple Factors of Insulin Resistance

The present study was carried out to determine the effect of berberine on glucose homeostasis and several biomarkers associated with insulin sensitivity in male Wistar rats with intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes. Rats with fasting blood glucose 16.7 mmol/L after 2 weeks of STZ injection were divided into two groups. One group was used as the diabetic control and another treated by gavage feeding with 100 mg/kg/d of berberine in water containing 0.5% carboxymethyl cellulose. A group of rats without receiving STZ was used as the normal control. After 7 weeks, berberine supplementation moderately but significantly lowered fasting blood glucose levels and improved oral glucose tolerance. Berberine lowered plasma free fatty acids and C-reactive protein levels without affecting plasma insulin levels. Diabetic rats treated with berberine showed significantly lower plasma triacylglycerol and cholesterol levels. Furthermore, berberine inhibited dipeptidyl peptidase-4 and protein tyrosine phosphatase-1B activities. In conclusion, berberine showed a dramatic effect of lowering blood cholesterol and triacylglycerols and improved moderately glucose homeostasis in STZ-induced diabetic rats in association with multiple factors related to insulin resistance

The present study was aimed at investigating the efficacy and mechanism(s) of action of a Chinese herbal formulation, Liuwei Dihuang (LWDH), as a prospective natural weight-lowering product. Following a 2-week acclimation period, 48 obesity-prone (OP-CD) rats were divided into 4 groups (n = 12 each). One group served as a positive control for obesity (OP), while the other 3 were challenged twice daily by oral gavage with total daily dosages of 500, 1500, or 3500 mg/kg BW LWDH, respectively, for 10 weeks. One group (n = 12) of obesity-resistant (OR-CD) rats served as the normal control group. All rats were fed the same AIN-93G diet modified to contain 60% energy from fat. The highest LWDH dose significantly reduced body weight during the last 4 weeks of treatment. Food intake was reduced beginning in week 2. The high LWDH dose lowered serum triglyceride (TG) and nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA) levels and body fat. Both the high and medium doses also lowered serum leptin and insulin levels. Liver function testing revealed no adverse side effects under the current experimental conditions. The results of the present study suggest that LWDH has potential as a preventive or therapeutic natural product against overweight and obesity

AFM tip-based mechanical nanomachining of 3D micro and nano-structures via the control of the scratching trajectory

This paper presents a novel mechanical material removal method to produce nanostructures with a precise control of their three dimensional (3D) surface topography. The method employs the tip of an atomic force microscope (AFM) probe as the cutting tool and a closed-loop high precision stage to control the machining path of the tip. In this approach, the tip only describes vertical motions while the stage is actuated along lateral directions in a raster scan strategy. The machining of features with 3D nanoscale topography in this way is the combined result of the tip applying a constant normal load on the sample while varying the distance (i.e. the feed) between two parallel lines of cut. More specifically, an increased feed leads to a reduced machining depth and vice-versa. Thus, the main difference with mechanical milling or turning at such small scale is that this method relies on the control of the feed to determine the machined depth. To support the interpretation of the process outcomes, an analytical model is developed. This model expresses the relationship between the feed and the machined depth as a function of the contact area between the tip and the material. The critical achievable slope of produced nanostructures was derived from this model and validated using experimental tests. This parameter corresponds to the maximum inclination of the surface of a nanostructure that can be machined with the proposed method. From the knowledge of the critical slope, the machining of periodic nanostructures was demonstrated on a single crystal copper workpiece. In principle, the method reported here could be implemented to any instrument with micro- and nano-indentation capabilities by exploiting their load-control feedback mechanism

The so called cognitive enhancers have been widely and increasingly used by healthy individuals, who despite not having any kind of pathology, seek improvements in cognitive performance. A drug used for this purpose is methylphenidate, a first choice drug for the treatment of the attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of acute administration of different doses of methylphenidate (10, 20 and 40 mg and placebo) in a wide range of cognitive functions in healthy young subjects. Participated in the study 36 university students or graduates, and were applied tests of attention, working memory, episodic and semantic memory. There were no differences among the groups in any of the tests. Significant effect on self-assessment of well being was observed, and this effect was dose dependent - 40 mg> placebo. According to recent literature, psychostimulant medications such as methylphenidate, produce improvements in performance when cognitive processes are below an optimal level which was not the case of the subjects of this study. Thus, the impression that methylphenidate improves cognitive performance in healthy young people is probably due to the effect of subjective well-being.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Associação Fundo de Incentivo à Psicofarmacologia (AFIP)BV UNIFESP: Teses e dissertaçõe
