Incentives for Fertilizer Use in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Review of Empirical Evidence on Fertilizer Response and Profitability

This research addresses two questions: Why is fertilizer not yet fulfilling its potential as a major stimulus to agricultural productivity in SSA? What can be done to improve the situation? Our answers are based on an extensive review of fertilizer response, profitability, and policy literature as well as some analysis of crop budgets and aggregate national statistics on fertilizer consumption. How cost-effective is biofortification in combating micronutrient malnutrition?: An ex-ante assessment

"Biofortification is increasingly seen as an additional tool to combat micronutrient malnutrition. This paper presents, for the first time, evidence on the costs and potential benefits of biofortification for a large number of countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. We use a modification of the Disability-Adjusted Life Years framework to conclude that the intervention can make a significant impact on the burden of micronutrient deficiencies in the developing world, and can do so in a highly cost-effective manner." The thesis describes the trajectory of income inequality and economic mobility in the United States throughout the later half of the 20th century. The thesis attempts to determine a causal link between high rates of income inequality with low rates of absolute and relative economic mobility. It seeks to discern the mechanism through which this happens. The thesis then turns to the broader discussion that revolves around causes of inequality such as inequality and growth, and surveys possible policies to treat income inequality and observe which policies work, such as a progressive tax on income and capital and which are less effective such as place based policies
