Formation of artificial pores in nano-TiO2 photo-electrode films using acetylene-black for high-efficiency, dye-sensitized solar cells
Acetylene-black paste without a light scattering layer was applied to meso-porous TiO2 photo-electrode films with a crystalline framework, a low residual carbon, and a tunable morphological pore size. The thermal-treated TiO2 photo-electrode films had an increased acetylene-black concentration with an increase in artificial pores and a decrease in residual carbon. The performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) was enhanced by the use of the TiO2 photo-anode pastes at various acetylene-black concentrations. The photo-conversion efficiency of the DSSCs using TiO2 photo-electrode films with 1.5 wt% acetylene-black was enhanced from 7.98 (no acetylene-black) to 9.75% without the integration of a light-scattering layer.open5
Pure kinetic k-essence as the cosmic speed-up
In this paper, we consider three types of k-essence. These k-essence models
were presented in the parametric forms. The exact analytical solutions of the
corresponding equations of motion are found. It is shown that these k-essence

Observation of the Spin-Seebeck Effect in a Ferromagnetic Semiconductor
The spin-Seebeck effect was recently discovered in a metallic ferromagnet and
consists of a thermally generated spin distribution that is electrically
measured utilizing the inverse spin Hall effect. Here this effect is reproduced
experimentally in a ferromagnetic semiconductor, GaMnAs, which allows for
flexible design of the magnetization directions, a larger spin polarization,
and measurements across the magnetic phase transition. The spin-Seebeck effect
in GaMnAs is observed even in the absence of longitudinal charge transport. The
spatial distribution of spin-currents is maintained across electrical breaks
highlighting the local nature of the effect, which is therefore ascribed to a

Trends in Notifiable Infectious Diseases in China: Implications for Surveillance and Population Health Policy
This study aimed to analyse trends in notifiable infectious diseases in China, in their historical context. Both English and Chinese literature was searched and diseases were categorised according to the type of disease or transmission route. Temporal trends of morbidity and mortality rates were calculated for eight major infectious diseases types. Strong government commitment to public health responses and improvements in quality of life has led to the eradication or containment of a wide range of infectious diseases in China. The overall infectious diseases burden experienced a dramatic drop during 1975–1995, but since then, it reverted and maintained a gradual upward trend to date. Most notifiable diseases are contained at a low endemic level; however, local small-scale outbreaks remain common. Tuberculosis, as a bacterial infection, has re-emerged since the 1990s and has become prevalent in the country. Sexually transmitted infections are in a rapid, exponential growth phase, spreading from core groups to the general population. Together human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), they account for 39% of all death cases due to infectious diseases in China in 2008. Zoonotic infections, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), rabies and influenza, pose constant threats to Chinese residents and remain the most deadly disease type among the infected individuals. Therefore, second-generation surveillance of behavioural risks or vectors associated with pathogen transmission should be scaled up. It is necessary to implement public health interventions that target HIV and relevant coinfections, address transmission associated with highly mobile populations, and reduce the risk of cross-species transmission of zoonotic pathogens
Deriving the mass of particles from Extended Theories of Gravity in LHC era
We derive a geometrical approach to produce the mass of particles that could
be suitably tested at LHC. Starting from a 5D unification scheme, we show that
all the known interactions could be suitably deduced as an induced symmetry
breaking of the non-unitary GL(4)-group of diffeomorphisms. The deformations
inducing such a breaking act as vector bosons that, depending on the
gravitational mass states, can assume the role of interaction bosons like
gluons, electroweak bosons or photon. The further gravitational degrees of
freedom, emerging from the reduction mechanism in 4D, eliminate the hierarchy
problem since generate a cut-off comparable with electroweak one at TeV scales.
In this "economic" scheme, gravity should induce the other interactions in a

Ferromagnetic Semiconductors: Moving Beyond (Ga,Mn)As
The recent development of MBE techniques for growth of III-V ferromagnetic
semiconductors has created materials with exceptional promise in spintronics,
i.e. electronics that exploit carrier spin polarization. Among the most
carefully studied of these materials is (Ga,Mn)As, in which meticulous
optimization of growth techniques has led to reproducible materials properties
and ferromagnetic transition temperatures well above 150 K. We review progress
in the understanding of this particular material and efforts to address
ferromagnetic semiconductors as a class. We then discuss proposals for how
these materials might find applications in spintronics. Finally, we propose
criteria that can be used to judge the potential utility of newly discovered
ferromagnetic semiconductors, and we suggest guidelines that may be helpful in
shaping the search for the ideal material.Comment: 37 pages, 4 figure
The fundamental constants and their variation: observational status and theoretical motivations
This article describes the various experimental bounds on the variation of
the fundamental constants of nature. After a discussion on the role of
fundamental constants, of their definition and link with metrology, the various
constraints on the variation of the fine structure constant, the gravitational,
weak and strong interactions couplings and the electron to proton mass ratio
are reviewed. This review aims (1) to provide the basics of each measurement,
(2) to show as clearly as possible why it constrains a given constant and (3)
to point out the underlying hypotheses. Such an investigation is of importance
to compare the different results, particularly in view of understanding the
recent claims of the detections of a variation of the fine structure constant
and of the electron to proton mass ratio in quasar absorption spectra. The
theoretical models leading to the prediction of such variation are also
reviewed, including Kaluza-Klein theories, string theories and other
alternative theories and cosmological implications of these results are

Characterization of Side Populations in HNSCC: Highly Invasive, Chemoresistant and Abnormal Wnt Signaling
Side Population (SP) cells, a subset of Hoechst-low cells, are enriched with stem cells. Originally, SP cells were isolated from bone marrow but recently have been found in various solid tumors and cancer cell lines that are clonogenic in vitro and tumorigenic in vivo. In this study, SP cells from lymph node metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) cell lines were examined using flow cytometry and Hoechst 3342 efflux assay. We found that highly metastatic HNSCC cell lines M3a2 and M4e contained more SP cells compared to the low metastatic parental HNSCC cell line 686LN. SP cells in HNSCC were highly invasive in vitro and tumorigenic in vivo compared to non-SP cells. Furthermore, SP cells highly expressed ABCG2 and were chemoresistant to Bortezomib and etoposide. Importantly, we found that SP cells in HNSCC had abnormal activation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling as compared to non-SP cells. Together, these findings indicate that SP cells might be a major driving force of head and neck tumor formation and metastasis. The Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway may be an important target for eliminating cancer stem cells in HNSCC
Scaling properties of proton and anti-proton production in sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV Au + Au collisions
We report on the yield of protons and anti-protons, as a function of
centrality and transverse momentum, in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV
measured at mid-rapidity by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC. In central
collisions at intermediate transverse momenta (1.5 < p_T < 4.5 GeV/c) a
significant fraction of all produced particles are protons and anti-protons.
They show a centrality-scaling behavior different from that of pions. The
p-bar/pion and p/pion ratios are enhanced compared to peripheral Au+Au, p+p,
and electron+positron collisions. This enhancement is limited to p_T < 5 GeV/c
as deduced from the ratio of charged hadrons to pi^0 measured in the range 1.5

Deuteron and antideuteron production in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV
The production of deuterons and antideuterons in the transverse momentum
range 1.1 < p_T < 4.3 GeV/c at mid-rapidity in Au + Au collisions at
sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV has been studied by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC. A
coalescence analysis comparing the deuteron and antideuteron spectra with those
of protons and antiprotons, has been performed. The coalescence probability is
equal for both deuterons and antideuterons and increases as a function of p_T,
which is consistent with an expanding collision zone. Comparing (anti)proton
yields p_bar/p = 0.73 +/- 0.01, with (anti)deuteron yields: d_bar/d = 0.47 +/-
0.03, we estimate that n_bar/n = 0.64 +/- 0.04.Comment: 326 authors, 6 pages text, 5 figures, 1 Table. Submitted to PRL.
