    A Natural Language Processing Based Internet Agent

    Searching for useful information is a difficult job by the virtue of the information overloading problem. With technological advances, notably the World-Wide Web (WWW), it allows every ordinary information owner to offer information online for others to access and retrieve. However, it also makes up a global information system that is extremely large-scale, diverse and dynamic. Internet agents and Internet search engines have been used to deal with such problems. But the search results are usually not quite relevant to what a user wants since most of them use simple keyword matching. In this paper, we propose a natural language processing based agent (NIAGENT) that understands a user's natural query. NIAGENT not only cooperates with a meta Internet search engine in order to increase recall of web pages but also analyzes the contents of the referenced documents to increase precision. Moreover, the proposed agent is autonomous, light-weight, and multithreaded. The architectural design also represents an interesting application of a distributed and cooperative computing paradigm. A prototype of NIAGENT, implemented in Java, shows its promise to find more useful information than keyword based searching.published_or_final_versio

    Pattern and degree of left ventricular remodeling following a tailored surgical approach for hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy.

    Background The role of a tailored surgical approach for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) on regional ventricular remodelling remains unknown. The aims of this study were to evaluate the pattern, extent and functional impact of regional ventricular remodelling after a tailored surgical approach. Methods From 2005 to 2008, 44 patients with obstructive HCM underwent tailored surgical intervention. Of those, 14 were ineligible for cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) studies. From the remainder, 14 unselected patients (42±12 years) underwent pre- and post-operative CMR studies at a median 12 months post-operatively (range 4-37 months). Regional changes in left ventricular (LV) thickness as well as global LV function following surgery were assessed using CMR Tools (London, UK). Results Pre-operative mean echocardiographic septal thickness was 21±4 mm and mean LV outflow gradient was 69±32 mmHg. Following surgery, there was a significant degree of regional regression of LV thickness in all segments of the LV, ranging from 16% in the antero-lateral midventricular segment to 41% in the anterior basal segment. Wall thickening was significantly increased in basal segments but showed no significant change in the midventricular or apical segments. Globally, mean indexed LV mass decreased significantly after surgery (120±29g/m2 versus 154±36g/m2; p<0.001). There was a trend for increased indexed LV end-diastolic volume (70±13 mL versus 65±11 mL; p=0.16) with a normalization of LV ejection fraction (68±7% versus 75±9%; p<0.01). Conclusion Following a tailored surgical relief of outflow obstruction for HCM, there is a marked regional reverse LV remodelling. These changes could have a significant impact on overall ventricular dynamics and function

    Stress and its effects on optical properties of GaN epilayers grown in Si(111), 6H-SiC(0001), and c-plane sapphire were investigated. Large tensile stress was present in GaN epilayers grown on Si and 6H-SiC, and a small compressive stress appeared in the film grown on sapphire. The results showed that the thermal mismatch between the epilayers and the substrates plays a major role in determining the residual strain in the films.published_or_final_versio

    Hierarchical Learning Algorithms for Multi-scale Expert Problems

    In this paper, we study the multi-scale expert problem, where the rewards of different experts vary in different reward ranges. The performance of existing algorithms for the multi-scale expert problem degrades linearly proportional to the maximum reward range of any expert or the best expert and does not capture the non-uniform heterogeneity in the reward ranges among experts. In this work, we propose learning algorithms that construct a hierarchical tree structure based on the heterogeneity of the reward range of experts and then determine differentiated learning rates based on the reward upper bounds and cumulative empirical feedback over time. We then characterize the regret of the proposed algorithms as a function of non-uniform reward ranges and show that their regrets outperform prior algorithms when the rewards of experts exhibit non-uniform heterogeneity in different ranges. Last, our numerical experiments verify our algorithms' efficiency compared to previous algorithms

    This study develops a new port performance measurement model by taking the perspectives from different port stakeholders. The novelty lies in the modelling of interdependencies among port performance measures, and the combination of weights of interdependent measures with both qualitative and quantitative evaluations of the measures from multiple stakeholders for quantitative port performance measurement. It represents an effective performance measurement tool and offers a diagnostic instrument for performance evaluation and/or monitoring of ports and terminals so as to satisfy different requirements of various port stakeholders in a flexible manner. © 201

    Thermal redistribution of localized excitons and its effect on the luminescence band in InGaN ternary alloys

    Temperature-dependent photoluminescence measurements have been carried out in zinc-blende InGaN epilayers grown on GaAs substrates by metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxy. An anomalous temperature dependence of the peak position of the luminescence band was observed. Considering thermal activation and the transfer of excitons localized at different potential minima, we employed a model to explain the observed behavior. A good agreement between the theory and the experiment is achieved. At high temperatures, the model can be approximated to the band-tail-state emission model proposed by Eliseev et al. [Appl. Phys.
