    On Electric Conduction of Amorphous Silicon Carbonitride Derived from a Polymeric Precursor

    A long-existing problem that the conductivity of amorphous silicon carbonitrides derived from polymeric precursor increases significantly with pyrolysis temperature is investigated. We show that the conductivity exhibited an Arrhenius dependence on pyrolysis temperature, with the activation energy of ∼3.41 eV. Structural analysis using Raman spectroscopy reveals that the free carbon within the material undergoes a sp3-to-sp2 transition as pyrolysis temperature increases, with the activation energy of ∼3.6 eV. We conclude that the pyrolysis-temperature induced increase in the conductivity is mainly due to the increase in the conductivity of the free carbon. A simple model is proposed to correlate the two

    Ultraviolet photoluminescence from 3C-SiC nanorods

    An intensive sharp photoluminescence at 3.3 eV is observed from single-crystal 3C-SiC nanorods. Structural characterization reveals that the nanorods contain a fairly large amount of threefold stacking faults. We tentatively attribute the emission to these stalking faults, which structurally resemble 6H-SiC nano-layers of 1.5 nm embedded in a 3C-SiC matrix.     Hopf bifurcation and patterns in a modified SIR model

    Infectious diseases have constantly threatened human safety because the diffusion of the susceptible and infected may make more individuals infected and even die. In this paper, a modified SIR model with both external stimulus and diffusion is considered to illustrate the dynamical mechanism of the periodic outbreak and pattern formation. Firstly, we propose a modified SIR model based on the propagation behaviour of infectious diseases to show the effects of the different parameters and diffusion on the outbreak. The Hopf bifurcation and multiscale methods are performed to analyze the stability of this model, which explains the dynamical mechanism of the periodic outbreak. Then, the pattern formation and Turing instability are discussed through comparison principles to reveal the role of periodic disturbances and diffusion in selecting pattern formation. Also, we find rich patterns that may occur when the frequency modulation is close to the intrinsic frequency. Finally, our theoretical results are verified by numerical simulation

    Bifurcation and pattern dynamics in the nutrient-plankton network

    This paper used a Holling-IV nutrient-plankton model with a network to describe algae's spatial and temporal distribution and variation in a specific sea area. The stability and bifurcation of the nonlinear dynamic model of harmful algal blooms (HABs) were analyzed using the nonlinear dynamic theory and de-eutrophication's effect on algae's nonlinear dynamic behavior. The conditions for equilibrium points (local and global), saddle-node, transcritical, Hopf-Andronov and Bogdanov-Takens (B-T) bifurcation were obtained. The stability of the limit cycle was then judged and the rich and complex phenomenon was obtained by numerical simulations, which revealed the robustness of the nutrient-plankton system by switching between nodes. Also, these results show the relationship between HABs and bifurcation, which has important guiding significance for solving the environmental problems of HABs caused by the abnormal increase of phytoplankton

    Discovery and identification of potential biomarkers of papillary thyroid carcinoma

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Thyroid carcinoma is the most common endocrine malignancy and a common cancer among the malignancies of head and neck. Noninvasive and convenient biomarkers for diagnosis of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) as early as possible remain an urgent need. The aim of this study was to discover and identify potential protein biomarkers for PTC specifically.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Two hundred and twenty four (224) serum samples with 108 PTC and 116 controls were randomly divided into a training set and a blind testing set. Serum proteomic profiles were analyzed using SELDI-TOF-MS. Candidate biomarkers were purified by HPLC, identified by LC-MS/MS and validated using ProteinChip immunoassays.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 3 peaks (<it>m/z </it>with 9190, 6631 and 8697 Da) were screened out by support vector machine (SVM) to construct the classification model with high discriminatory power in the training set. The sensitivity and specificity of the model were 95.15% and 93.97% respectively in the blind testing set. The candidate biomarker with <it>m/z </it>of 9190 Da was found to be up-regulated in PTC patients, and was identified as haptoglobin alpha-1 chain. Another two candidate biomarkers (6631, 8697 Da) were found down-regulated in PTC and identified as apolipoprotein C-I and apolipoprotein C-III, respectively. In addition, the level of haptoglobin alpha-1 chain (9190 Da) progressively increased with the clinical stage I, II, III and IV, and the expression of apolipoprotein C-I and apolipoprotein C-III (6631, 8697 Da) gradually decreased in higher stages.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We have identified a set of biomarkers that could discriminate PTC from non-cancer controls. An efficient strategy, including SELDI-TOF-MS analysis, HPLC purification, MALDI-TOF-MS trace and LC-MS/MS identification, has been proved successful.</p

    Case report: Subcutaneous Mycobacterium haemophilum infection in an immunocompetent patient after lipolysis injections

    Mycobacterium haemophilum is a slow-growing, aerobic mycobacterium that acts as a pathogen in immunocompromised adult patients and immunocompetent children. There are only a few rare cases in the literature describing this species as a cause of subcutaneous infections. Here, we describe a subcutaneous infection caused by M. haemophilum in an immunocompetent female after lipolysis injections at an unqualified beauty salon, suggesting that this bacteria can also be a potential causative agent of adverse events in medical aesthetics. In addition, M. haemophilum caused lesions not only at the injection sites and adjacent areas but also invaded distant sections through the subcutaneous sinus tracts. Thus, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are vital to prevent further deterioration and improve prognosis

    Abstract-In order for individuals suffering from transfemoral amputation to walk in a variety of circumstances, the above-knee prosthesis based on posture recognition was presented. The body posture of lower limb was classified into four classes, &quot;stair&quot;, &quot;sitting&quot;, &quot;standing&quot;, and &quot;walking&quot;. For measure the amputee&apos;s movement intent, surface EMG signals which can reflect amputee&apos;s movement intent and can be measured without invasion were applied to identify postural adjustments by support vector machine. The result of this study indicates that this method can recognize every postural adjustment with a higher identification rate, and has a great potential in practical application of artificial lower limb
