Preliminary study of beta-blocker therapy on modulation of interleukin-33/ST2 signaling during ventricular remodeling after acute myocardial infarction
Background: This study aimed to evaluate the role of b-blocker therapy on modulating interleukin (IL)-33/ST2 (interleukin-1 receptor-like 1) signaling during ventricular remodeling related to heart failure (HF) after acute myocardial infarction (AMI).
Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats that survived surgery to induce AMI were randomly divided into the placebo group and the b-blocker treatment group. A sham group was used as a control. Left ventricular (LV) function variables, the myocardial infarct size, fibrosis and IL-33/ST2 protein expression was measured.
Results: Compared with the placebo group, b-blocker treatment significantly improved LV function and reduced infarct size (p < 0.05). There was higher protein expression of IL-33 (p < 0.05) and sST2 (p < 0.05), as well as higher expression of fibrosis (p < 0.05), compared to the sham group. Notably, the high expression of cardioprotective IL-33 was not affected by b-blocker treatment (p > 0.05), however, treatment with b-blocker enhanced IL-33/ST2 signaling, with lower expression of sST2 (p < 0.05) and significantly attenuated fibrosis (p < 0.05).
Conclusions: Our study suggested that b-blocker therapy might play a beneficial role in the modulaÂtion of IL-33/ST2 signaling during ventricular remodeling. These results may be helpful in identifying IL-33/ST2 systems as putative b-blocker targets at an early stage after AMI. (Cardiol J 2017; 24, 2: 188–194
Effect of Lifestyle Changes after Percutaneous Coronary Intervention on Revascularization
Objective. Whether optimal cardiovascular health metrics may reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in secondary prevention is uncertain. The study was conducted to evaluate the influence of lifestyle changes on clinical outcomes among the subjects underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Methods. The study group consists of 17,099 consecutive PCI patients. We recorded data on subject lifestyle behavior changes after their procedure. Patients were categorized as ideal, intermediate, or poor CV health according to a modified Life’s Simple 7 score (on body mass, smoking, physical activity, diet, cholesterol, blood pressure, and glucose). Multivariable COX regression was used to evaluate the association between CV health and revascularization event. We also tested the impact of cumulative cardiovascular health score on reoccurrence of cardiovascular event. Results. During a 3-year median follow-up, 1,583 revascularization events were identified. The observed revascularization rate was 8.0%, 9.3%, and 10.6% in the group of patients with optimal (a modified Life’s Simple 7 score of 11–14), average (score = 9 or 10), or inadequate (less or equal than 8) CV health, respectively. After multivariable analysis, the adjusted hazard ratios were 0.83 (95% CI: 0.73–0.94) and 0.89 (95% CI: 0.79–0.99) for patients with optimal and average lifestyle changes comparing with the inadequate tertile ( for trend = 0.003). In addition, each unit increase in above metrics was associated with a decrease risk of revascularization (HR, 0.96; 95% confidence interval, 0.93–0.98; ). Conclusion. Ideal CV health related to lower incidence of cardiovascular events, even after the percutaneous coronary intervention. Revascularization can be reduced by lifestyle changes. The cardiovascular health metrics could be extrapolated to secondary prevention and need for further validation
A novel switchgear state assessment framework based on improved fuzzy C-means clustering method with deep belief network
Due to the problems such as fuzzy state assessment grading boundaries, the recognition accuracy is low when using traditional fuzzy techniques to grade the switchgear state. To address this problem, this paper proposes a switchgear state assessment and grading method based on deep belief network (DBN) and improved fuzzy C-means clustering (IFCM). Firstly, the switchgear state information data are processed by normalization method; then the feature parameters are extracted from the switchgear state information data by using DBN, and finally the extracted feature parameters are categorised according to the condition of switchgear equipment through clustering using IFCM. The experimental results show that the accuracy of the method in assessing the switchgear state under small sample conditions reaches 94, which exceeds the accuracy of other switchgear state assessment grading methods currently in use

However, an in-depth understanding of their mechanisms at the nanoscale still remains challenging. Here, we present an in-situ investigation by tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) imaging of the plasmon-induced [4+4]-cycloaddition polymerization within anthracene-based monomer monolayers physisorbed on Au(111), and complement the experimental results with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This two-dimensional (2D) polymerization can be flexibly triggered and manipulated by the hot carriers, and be monitored simultaneously by TERS in real time and space. TERS imaging provides direct evidence for covalent bond formation with ca. 3.7 nm spatial resolution under ambient conditions. Combined with DFT calculations, the TERS results demonstrate that the lateral polymerization on Au(111) occurs by a hot electron tunneling mechanism, and crosslinks form via a self-stimulating growth mechanism. We show that TERS is promising to be plasmon-induced nanolithography for organic 2D materials

Numerical investigation of GHz repetition rate fundamentally mode-locked all-fiber lasers
GHz repetition rate fundamentally mode-locked lasers have attracted great interest for a variety of scientific and practical applications. A passively mode-locked laser in all-fiber format has the advantages of high stability, maintenance-free operation, super compactness, and reliability. In this paper, we present numerical investigation on passive mode-locking of all-fiber lasers operating at repetition rates of 1-20 GHz. Our calculations show that the reflectivity of the output coupler, the small signal gain of the doped fiber, the total net cavity dispersion, and the modulation depth of the saturable absorber are the key parameters for producing stable fundamentally mode-locked pulses at GHz repetition rates in very short all-fiber linear cavities. The instabilities of GHz repetition rate fundamentally mode-locked all-fiber lasers with different parameters were calculated and analyzed. Compared to a regular MHz repetition rate mode-locked all-fiber laser, the pump power range for the mode-locking of a GHz repetition rate all-fiber laser is much larger due to the several orders of magnitude lower accumulated nonlinearity in the fiber cavity The presented numerical study provides valuable guidance for the design and development of highly stable mode-locked all-fiber lasers operating at GHz repetition rates.National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center for Integrated Access Networks [EEC-0812072]; Technology Research Initiative Fund (TRIF) Photonics Initiative of the University of Arizona; National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) [61575075]Open access journalThis item from the UA Faculty Publications collection is made available by the University of Arizona with support from the University of Arizona Libraries. Research on mechanical properties of high-performance cable-in-conduit conductors with different design
The China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR) is a new tokamak fusion reactor under preliminary design, where the toroidal field (TF) coil has been designed to create a magnetic field of over 14.3 T. The TF conductors need to operate stably at 14.3 T, requiring the exclusion of conductor performance degradation from thermal and electromagnetic loading as much as possible. The maximum Lorentz force will reach about 1200 kN m-1, which is much higher than that of ITER conductors. In previous research, performance degradation was found during electromagnetic cycles and warm-up-cool-down cycles. A correlation was found between a conductor's degradation and its mechanical properties. According to the analysis, a conductor with a short twist pitch (STP) scheme or a copper wound superconducting strand (CWS) design has large stiffness, which enables significant performance improvement in terms of the electromagnetic and thermal load cycling. The cable stiffness is closely related to the number of inter-strand contact points inside the conductor. Based on this concept, four types of prototype cable-in-conduit conductor samples with STP and CWS design were manufactured. The number of inter-strand contact points was analyzed, and mechanical transverse load testing was performed at 77 K. The results show that the conductors with more contact points per unit length exhibit a higher stiffness. However, the cable designed with high cable stiffness caused strand indentation, which was also investigated. In this paper, the conductor design and experimental results are discussed and compared with ITER TF and central solenoid conductors.</p

The Yichun River Basin, China, is used as a case study, and the sensitivity of the SWAT parameters is analyzed under typical dry, normal and wet years, respectively. To reduce the number of model parameters, some spatial model parameters are grouped in terms of data availability and multipliers are then applied to parameter groups, reflecting spatial variation in the distributed SWAT model. The SWAT model performance is represented using two statistical metrics – Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and Nash–Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) and two hydrological metrics – RunOff Coefficient Error (ROCE) and Slope of the Flow Duration Curve Error (SFDCE). The analysis reveals the individual effects of each parameter and its interactions with other parameters. Parameter interactions contribute to a significant portion of the variation in all metrics considered under moderate and wet years. In particular, the variation in the two hydrological metrics is dominated by the interactions, illustrating the necessity of choosing a global sensitivity analysis method that is able to consider interactions in the SWAT model identification process. In the dry year, however, the individual effects control the variation in the other three metrics except SFDCE. Further, the two statistical metrics fail to identify the SWAT parameters that control the flashiness (i.e., variability of mid-flows) and overall water balance. Overall, the results obtained from the global sensitivity analysis provide an in-depth understanding of the underlying hydrological processes under different metrics and climatic conditions in the case study catchment.National Natural Science Foundation of Chin
Study on hybrid ground-coupled heat pump system for air-conditioning in hot-weather areas like Hong Kong
The ground-coupled heat pump (GCHP) system is becoming attractive for air-conditioning in some moderate-weather regions due to its high energy efficiency and reliable operation capability. However, when the technology is used in buildings where there is only cooling load in hot-weather areas like Hong Kong, the heat rejected into the ground by the GCHP systems will accumulate around the ground heat exchangers (GHE). This heat accumulation will result in degradation of system performance and increment of system operating costs. This problem can be resolved by using the hybrid ground-coupled heat pump (HGCHP) system, which uses supplemental heat rejecters to reject the accumulated heat. This paper presents a practical hourly simulation model of the HGCHP system by modeling the heat transfer process of the system's main components. The computer program based on this hourly simulation model can be used to calculate the hour-by-hour operation data of the HGCHP system. As a case study, both a HGCHP system and a traditional GCHP system are designed for a hypothetic private residential building located in Hong Kong, and the economic comparisons are conducted between these two types of systems. The simulation results show that the HGCHP system can effectively solve the heat accumulation problem and reduce both the initial costs and operating costs of the air-conditioning system in the building.Hybrid ground-coupled heat pump systems Simulation model Hot-weather area Ground heat exchanger Supplemental heat rejecter
A novel controllable capacitor commutation based superconducting hybrid direct current breaker
Abstract Featuring low power loss and high reliability, voltage source converter medium voltage direct current (VSC-MVDC) systems have been widely employed for grid-tied renewable energy applications. To maintain high operational safety, circuit breakers are needed to isolate faulted powerlines by comprehensively considering response speed and installation cost. Research efforts have been put to realizing DC fault isolation by coordinating resistive type superconducting fault current limiter (R-SFCL) and integrated-gate-commutated-thyristor (IGCT) based hybrid DC circuit breaker. In this paper, a controllable current commutation based superconducting DC circuit breaker (CCCB-SDCCB) is proposed. By integrating R-SFCL with IGCT based hybrid DC circuit breakers, the current interrupting capacity can be greatly enlarged with the advantage of low cost and fast speed, and hence the overall cost for suppress large fault currents can be greatly reduced for MVDC systems. In addition, a new current injection circuit branch using H-bridge structure is designed to recycle the residual capacitor voltage from the previous fault stage to trigger the IGCTs without the capacitor pre-charging process. Simulation results show that the fault current can be successfully suppressed from 24.2 to 2.1 kA and fully interrupted within 4.11Â ms by the proposed CCCB-SDCCB
