Intermediary frictions and convertible bond pricing
Buy-and-hedge intermediaries are important investors in the convertible bond market as they intermediate between firms that require capital quickly and investors requiring time to assess the security. Their strategy requires them to manage the trade-offs involved with the costs and benefits of hedging. We find that prices of convertible securities reflect the costs that intermediaries incur when managing their positions. Especially cross-sectional and within-bond variation of intermediaries’ loan costs helps explain variation in convertible bond underpricing.</p

Pleasantness, familiarity, and identification of spice odors are interrelated and enhanced by consumption of herbs and food neophilia
The primary dimension of odor is pleasantness, which is associated with a multitude of factors. We investigated how the pleasantness, familiarity, and identification of spice odors were associated with each other and with the use of the respective spice, overall use of herbs, and level of food neophobia. A total of 126 adults (93 women, 33 men; age 25-61 years, mean 39 years) rated the odors from 12 spices (oregano, anise, rosemary, mint, caraway, sage, thyme, cinnamon, fennel, marjoram, garlic, and clove) for pleasantness and familiarity, and completed a multiple-choice odor identification. Data on the use of specific spices, overall use of herbs, and Food Neophobia Scale score were collected using an online questionnaire. Familiar odors were mostly rated as pleasant (except garlic), whereas unfamiliar odors were rated as neutral (r = 0.63). We observed consistent and often significant trends that suggested the odor pleasantness and familiarity were positively associated with the correct odor identification, consumption of the respective spice, overall use of herbs, and food neophilia. Our results suggest that knowledge acquisition through repetitive exposure to spice odor with active attention may gradually increase the odor pleasantness within the framework set by the chemical characteristics of the aroma compound. 5G-SMART D1.5 Evaluation of radio network deployment options
This deliverable results from the work on the radio network performance
analysis of the identified use cases and deployment options. Covered topics
include latency reduction and mobility features of the 5G NR itself, as well as
detailed analysis of the radio network KPIs, such as latency, reliability,
throughput, spectral efficiency and capacity. Corresponding trade-offs for the
identified deployment options and industrial use cases are quantified with an
extensive set of technical results. Also, this deliverable is looking into
co-channel coexistence performance analyzed through a real-life measurement
campaign and considers performance optimization in presence of a special

Malaria parasite tyrosyl-tRNA synthetase secretion triggers pro-inflammatory responses
Malaria infection triggers pro-inflammatory responses in humans that are detrimental to host health. Parasite-induced enhancement in cytokine levels correlate with malaria-associated pathologies. Here we show that parasite tyrosyl-tRNA synthetase (PfTyrRS), a housekeeping protein translation enzyme, induces pro-inflammatory responses from host immune cells. PfTyrRS exits from the parasite cytoplasm into the infected red blood cell (iRBC) cytoplasm, from where it is released into the extracellular medium on iRBC lysis. Using its ELR peptide motif, PfTyrRS specifically binds to and internalizes into host macrophages, leading to enhanced secretion of the pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α ± and IL-6. PfTyrRS-macrophage interaction also augments expression of adherence-linked host endothelial receptors ICAM-1 and VCAM-1. Our description of PfTyrRS as a parasite-secreted protein that triggers pro-inflammatory host responses, along with its atomic resolution crystal structure in complex with tyrosyl-adenylate, provides a novel platform for targeting PfTyrRS in anti-parasitic strategies
Randomized 20-year infancy-onset dietary intervention, life-long cardiovascular risk factors and retinal microvasculature
Background and Aims: Retinal microvasculature characteristics predict cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. This study investigated associations of lifelong cardiovascular risk factors and effects of dietary intervention on retinal microvasculature in young adulthood. Methods: The cohort is derived from the longitudinal Special Turku Coronary Risk Factor Intervention Project study. The Special Turku Coronary Risk Factor Intervention Project is a 20-year infancy-onset randomized controlled dietary intervention study with frequent study visits and follow-up extending to age 26 years. The dietary intervention aimed at a heart-healthy diet. Fundus photographs were taken at the 26-year follow-up, and microvascular measures [arteriolar and venular diameters, tortuosity (simple and curvature) and fractal dimensions] were derived (n = 486). Cumulative exposure as the area under the curve for cardiovascular risk factors and dietary components was determined for the longest available time period (e.g. from age 7 months to 26 years). Results: The dietary intervention had a favourable effect on retinal microvasculature resulting in less tortuous arterioles and venules and increased arteriolar fractal dimension in the intervention group when compared with the control group. The intervention effects were found even when controlled for the cumulative cardiovascular risk factors. Reduced lifelong cumulative intake of saturated fats, main target of the intervention, was also associated with less tortuous venules. Several lifelong cumulative risk factors were independently associated with the retinal microvascular measures, e.g. cumulative systolic blood pressure with narrower arterioles. Conclusions: Infancy-onset 20-year dietary intervention had favourable effects on the retinal microvasculature in young adulthood.
