Effect of PVA doping on flux pinning in Bulk MgB2
The synthesis and characterization of PVA (Poly Vinyl Acetate) doped bulk
MgB2 superconductor is reported here. PVA is used as a Carbon source. PVA
doping effects made two distinguishable contributions: first enhancement of Jc
field performance and second an increase in Hc2 value, both because of carbon
incorporation into MgB2 crystal lattice. The susceptibility measurement reveals
that Tc decreased from 37 to 36 K. Lattice parameter a decreased from 3.085 A
to 3.081 A due to the partial substitution of Carbon at Boron site. PVA doped
sample exhibited the Jc values greater than 10^5 A/cm2 at 5 & 10 K at low
fields; which is almost 3 times higher than the pure one, while at high fields
the Jc is increased by an order of magnitude in comparison to pure MgB2. From
R(T)H measurements we found higher Tc values under magnetic field for doped
sample; indicating an increase in Hc2. Also the magnetization measurements
exhibited a significant enhancement in Hirr value. The improved performance of
PVA doped MgB2 can be attributed to the substitution of carbon at boron site in
parent MgB2 and the resulting impact on the carrier density and impurity
scattering. The improved flux pinning behavior could easily be seen from

Effects of Adding Unsaturated Fatty Acids on Fatty Acid Composition of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Major Volatile Compounds in Wine
The synergistic influences of three unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs, namely linoleic acid, oleic acid andlinolenic acid) on the fatty acid composition of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and major volatile compoundswere investigated in synthetic grape juice. The addition of UFAs led to a corresponding increase in UFAsin the cellular lipid, which was accompanied by a reverse reduction in the content of medium-chainsaturated fatty acids (C6:0 to C14:0) and little variation in that of long-chain saturated fatty acids (C16:0to C24:0). The supplementation of UFAs considerably improved yeast growth and fermentation activityand, in particular, increased the concentrations of most volatile compounds in wine, including higheralcohols (2-phenylethanol, 2-methyl-1-propanol and 3-(methylthio)-1-propanol), medium-chain fattyacids (butanoic acid, hexanoic acid and octanoic acid), acetate esters (isoamyl acetate and 2-phenylethylacetate) and all ethyl esters. Remarkable linear relationships were further found between ethyl esters andthe concentration of the added UFAs (R2 from 0.909 to 0.996), which significantly intensified the fruity,flowery and sweet attributes of the final wine, as assessed by calculating the odour activity values. Ourresults suggest that rationally increasing the concentration of UFAs is not only a practical method toimprove yeast fermentation activity, but also a potential approach to manipulating wine aroma
Deficiency and excess of groundwater iodine and their health associations
More than two billion people worldwide have suffered thyroid disorders from either iodine deficiency or excess. By creating the national map of groundwater iodine throughout China, we reveal the spatial responses of diverse health risks to iodine in continental groundwater. Greater non-carcinogenic risks relevant to lower iodine more likely occur in the areas of higher altitude, while those associated with high groundwater iodine are concentrated in the areas suffered from transgressions enhanced by land over-use and intensive anthropogenic overexploitation. The potential roles of groundwater iodine species are also explored: iodide might be associated with subclinical hypothyroidism particularly in higher iodine regions, whereas iodate impacts on thyroid risks in presence of universal salt iodization exhibit high uncertainties in lower iodine regions. This implies that accurate iodine supply depending on spatial heterogeneity and dietary iodine structure optimization are highly needed to mitigate thyroid risks in iodine-deficient and -excess areas globally
Biochemical parameters of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) after transport with eugenol or essential oil of Lippia alba added to the water
The transport of live fish is a routine practice in aquaculture and constitutes a considerable source of stress to the animals. The addition of anesthetic to the water used for fish transport can prevent or mitigate the deleterious effects of transport stress. This study investigated the effects of the addition of eugenol (EUG) (1.5 or 3.0 mu L L-1) and essential oil of Lippia alba (EOL) (10 or 20 mu L L-1) on metabolic parameters (glycogen, lactate and total protein levels) in liver and muscle, acetylcholinesterase activity (AChE) in muscle and brain, and the levels of protein carbonyl (PC), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and nonprotein thiol groups (NPSH) and activity of glutathione-S-transferase in the liver of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen; Quoy and Gaimard, 1824) transported for four hours in plastic bags (loading density of 169.2 g L-1). The addition of various concentrations of EUG (1.5 or 3.0 mu L L-1) and EOL (10 or 20 mu L L-1) to the transport water is advisable for the transportation of silver catfish, since both concentrations of these substances increased the levels of NPSH antioxidant and decreased the TBARS levels in the liver. Study of flare energy release using events with numerous type III-like bursts in microwaves
The analysis of narrowband drifting of type III-like structures in radio
bursts dynamic spectra allows to obtain unique information about primary energy
release mechanisms in solar flares. The SSRT spatially resolved images and a
high spectral and temporal resolution allow direct determination not only the
positions of its sources but also the exciter velocities along the flare loop.
Practically, such measurements are possible during some special time intervals
when the SSRT (about 5.7 GHz) is observing the flare region in two high-order
fringes; thus, two 1D scans are recorded simultaneously at two frequency bands.
The analysis of type III-like bursts recorded during the flare 14 Apr 2002 is
presented. Using-muliwavelength radio observations recorded by SSRT, SBRS,
NoRP, RSTN we study an event with series of several tens of drifting microwave
pulses with drift rates in the range from -7 to 13 GHz/s. The sources of the
fast-drifting bursts were located near the top of the flare loop in a volume of
a few Mm in size. The slow drift of the exciters along the flare loop suggests

Experimental NMR Realization of A Generalized Quantum Search Algorithm
A generalized quantum search algorithm, where phase inversions for the marked
state and the prepared state are replaced by phase rotations, is
realized in a 2-qubit NMR heteronuclear system. The quantum algorithm searches
a marked state with a smaller step compared to standard Grover algorithm. Phase
matching requirement in quantum searching is demonstrated by comparing it with
another generalized algorithm where the two phase rotations are and
respectively. Pulse sequences which include non 90 degree pulses are

Partial Wave Analysis of
BES data on are presented. The
contribution peaks strongly near threshold. It is fitted with a
broad resonance with mass MeV, width MeV. A broad resonance peaking at 2020 MeV is also required
with width MeV. There is further evidence for a component
peaking at 2.55 GeV. The non- contribution is close to phase

Measurements of the Mass and Full-Width of the Meson
In a sample of 58 million events collected with the BES II detector,
the process J/ is observed in five different decay
channels: , , (with ), (with
) and . From a combined fit of all five
channels, we determine the mass and full-width of to be
MeV/ and

A Measurement of Psi(2S) Resonance Parameters
Cross sections for e+e- to hadons, pi+pi- J/Psi, and mu+mu- have been
measured in the vicinity of the Psi(2S) resonance using the BESII detector
operated at the BEPC. The Psi(2S) total width; partial widths to hadrons,
pi+pi- J/Psi, muons; and corresponding branching fractions have been determined
to be Gamma(total)= (264+-27) keV; Gamma(hadron)= (258+-26) keV, Gamma(mu)=
(2.44+-0.21) keV, and Gamma(pi+pi- J/Psi)= (85+-8.7) keV; and Br(hadron)=
(97.79+-0.15)%, Br(pi+pi- J/Psi)= (32+-1.4)%, Br(mu)= (0.93+-0.08)%,
