Separation of Lanthanoids by SiO 2 -P Adsorbent Impregnated with Extractants -13103

ABSTRACT The adsorption and separation properties of lanthanoids (Ln) were investigated for the mutual separation of trivalent minor actinoids (MA) by using different adsorbents of hydrophobic extractant/SiO 2 -P in solutions of hydrophilic extractant/HNO 3 . The synergistic effect by use of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic extractants was evaluated by batch and column experiments. The results of batch expariments showed the synergistic effect which lowered the K d values of Ln. In column experiments, effective mutual separation between Nd and Sm was demonstrated. These results suggest that the mutual separation between Am and Cm is possible because the K d values of Am and Cm are probably similar to those of Nd and Sm

p53 tumor suppressor gene mutations in fibroblast-like synoviocytes from erosion synovium and non-erosion synovium in rheumatoid arthritis

Abnormalities in the p53 tumor suppressor gene have been detected in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and could contribute to the pathogenesis of chronic disease. To determine whether synoviocytes from invasive synovium in RA have an increased number of mutations compared with non-erosion synoviocytes, p53 cDNA subclones from fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) derived from erosion and non-erosion sites of the same synovium were examined in patients requiring total joint replacement. Ten erosion FLS lines and nine non-erosion FLS lines were established from nine patients with RA. Exons 5–10 from 209 p53 subclones were sequenced (114 from erosion FLS, 95 from non-erosion FLS). Sixty percent of RA FLS cell lines and 8.6% of the p53 subclones isolated from FLS contained p53 mutations. No significant differences were observed between the erosion and non-erosion FLS with regard to the frequency or type of p53 mutation. The majority of the mutations were missense transition mutations, which are characteristic of oxidative damage. In addition, paired intact RA synovium and cultured FLS from the same joints were evaluated for p53 mutations. Matched synovium and cultured synoviocytes contained p53 mutations, although there was no overlap in the specific mutations identified in the paired samples. Clusters of p53 mutations in subclones were detected in some FLS, including one in codon 249, which is a well-recognized 'hot spot' associated with cancer. Our data are consistent with the hypothesis that p53 mutations are randomly induced by genotoxic exposure in small numbers of RA synoviocytes localized to erosion and non-erosion regions of RA synovium. The determining factor for invasiveness might be proximity to bone or cartilage rather than the presence of a p53 mutation

Hub structure in functional network of EEG signals supporting high cognitive functions in older individuals

IntroductionMaintaining high cognitive functions is desirable for “wellbeing” in old age and is particularly relevant to a super-aging society. According to their individual cognitive functions, optimal intervention for older individuals facilitates the maintenance of cognitive functions. Cognitive function is a result of whole-brain interactions. These interactions are reflected in several measures in graph theory analysis for the topological characteristics of functional connectivity. Betweenness centrality (BC), which can identify the “hub” node, i.e., the most important node affecting whole-brain network activity, may be appropriate for capturing whole-brain interactions. During the past decade, BC has been applied to capture changes in brain networks related to cognitive deficits arising from pathological conditions. In this study, we hypothesized that the hub structure of functional networks would reflect cognitive function, even in healthy elderly individuals.MethodTo test this hypothesis, based on the BC value of the functional connectivity obtained using the phase lag index from the electroencephalogram under the eyes closed resting state, we examined the relationship between the BC value and cognitive function measured using the Five Cognitive Functions test total score.ResultsWe found a significant positive correlation of BC with cognitive functioning and a significant enhancement in the BC value of individuals with high cognitive functioning, particularly in the frontal theta network.DiscussionThe hub structure may reflect the sophisticated integration and transmission of information in whole-brain networks to support high-level cognitive function. Our findings may contribute to the development of biomarkers for assessing cognitive function, enabling optimal interventions for maintaining cognitive function in older individuals

Membrane-based liquid desiccant dehumidification has attracted increasing interests with elimination of solution droplets carryover problem. In this study, a membrane-based hybrid liquid desiccant dehumidification cooling system is developed, which is mainly composed of a dehumidifier, a regenerator and an evaporative cooler. The system is capable to remove latent load by the liquid desiccant dehumidification unit and simultaneously to handle sensible load with an evaporative cooling unit. This paper presents a performance evaluation study of the hybrid system with calcium chloride as liquid desiccant based on experimental data. Series of tests are conducted to identify influences of operating variables and conditions (i.e. desiccant solution concentration ratio, regeneration temperature, inlet air condition, etc.) on the system performance. The experimental results indicate that the system is viable for dehumidification cooling purpose. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that mass balance between the dehumidifier and regenerator should be achieved for system steady operation. Thermal COPth of 0.70 and 24 electrical COPel of 2.62 are achieved respectively under steady operating condition at CaCl2 concentration ratio of 36%
