    Satellite galaxies in the Illustris-1 simulation: anisotropic locations around relatively isolated hosts

    We investigate the locations of satellite galaxies in the z = 0 redshift slice of the hydrodynamical Illustris-1 simulation. As expected from previous work, the satellites are distributed anisotropically in the plane of the sky, with a preference for being located near the major axes of their hosts. Due to misalignment of mass and light within the hosts, the degree of anisotropy is considerably less when satellite locations are measured with respect to the hosts' stellar surface mass density than when they are measured with respect to the hosts' dark matter surface mass density. When measured with respect to the hosts' dark matter surface mass density, the mean satellite location depends strongly on host stellar mass and luminosity, with the satellites of the faintest, least massive hosts showing the greatest anisotropy. When measured with respect to the hosts' stellar surface mass density, the mean satellite location is essentially independent of host stellar mass and luminosity. In addition, the satellite locations are largely insensitive to the amount of stellar mass used to define the hosts' stellar surface mass density, as long as at least 50% to 70% of the hosts' total stellar mass is used. The satellite locations are dependent upon the stellar masses of the satellites, with the most massive satellites having the most anisotropic distributions.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Analysis of hexavalent chromium species in household articles by a laboratory-type X-ray absorption spectrometer

    身の回りにあるクロムを含む多様な物品のクロムK 殻X 線吸収スペクトルを実験室系装置により測定し,XANES スペクトル解析により三価クロム種に対する六価種の定量分析を行った.高感度および高分解モードのスリット設定で測定されたXANES スペクトルの形状比較より,定量分析のために適した測定条件について論じた.全クロム中六価クロム種の定量はプリエッジピーク高さを用い,二種類の六価クロム化合物を用いても検量線の傾きの差は 1% であった.解析の結果,測定した三点の革製品およびクロム白雲母には六価クロム種は含まれていなかった.虹色光沢を呈したクロメート試料からは六価クロム種が検出された.Cr K-edge XANES spectra of various kinds of household articles such as leather products and chromate conversion coatings were recorded with a laboratory-type X-ray absorption spectrometer for quantitative analysis of hexavalent chromium species. The low energy resolution settings were found to be enough and suitable for the quantitative analyses with the spectrometer. The tiny but distinct preedge peak characteristics to hexavalent chromium species could be detected in XANES spectra of chromate conversion coatings with iridescent color, and the ratios of hexavalent to sum of hexa- and trivalent chromium species (Cr6 + /(Cr6 + + Cr3 + )) were calculated by the preedge peak height

    Collective Excitations and Nonequilibrium Phase Transition in Dissipative Fermionic Superfluids

    We predict a new mechanism to induce collective excitations of a fermionic superfluid via sudden switch-on of two-body loss, for which we extend the BCS theory to fully incorporate quantum jumps. We find that such dissipation induces an amplitude oscillation of the superfluid order parameter accompanied by chirped phase rotation, which highlights the role of dissipation in a superfluid as a consequence of particle loss. We demonstrate that when the dissipation is introduced to one of the two superfluids coupled via a Josephson junction, it gives rise to a relative-phase mode analogous to the Leggett mode, which can be detected from time evolution of the Josephson current. We find that the coupled system exhibits a nonequilibrium dissipative phase transition characterized by the vanishing dc Josephson current. The dissipation-induced collective modes can be realized with ultracold fermionic atoms undergoing inelastic collisions.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure

    Several studies have identified a relationship between myelodysplastic syndrome and Behçetʼs disease (BD), especially intestinal BD, and trisomy 8 appears to play an important role in these disorders. Despite this, only few case reports or series have been reported in gastroenterology, meaning that endoscopic findings and characteristics of intestinal BD have not been clarified yet. In this report, we describe three cases of intestinal BD associated with myelodysplastic syndrome and trisomy 8, and discuss the clinical features and problems of these disorders from a gastroenterology perspective

    Fermented persimmon extract (kaki-shibu) is useful as a standard for component analyses of persimmon phytobezoars

    The definite diagnosis of persimmon phytobezoar (i.e., diospyrobezoar) is often accomplished by a component analysis using infrared spectroscopy. However, no studies have been conducted to investigate which substance is the best as a standard for the component analysis. Here we analyzed tannic acid, Japanese persimmon (kaki), fermented persimmon extract (kaki-shibu), conventional dried persimmon, and dried persimmon smoked in sulfur (ampo-kaki) by infrared spectroscopy to determine which would be optimal as a component analysis standard. The spectrum between 1,600 to 600cm-1 of a persimmon phytobezoar was quite similar to the spectrum of kaki-shibu rather than that of tannic acid. Consequently, we conclude that kaki-shibu should be used as a standard for infrared spectroscopy analyses of persimmon phytobezoars

    Phosphatidylinositol phosphate 5-kinase Iβ recruits AP-2 to the plasma membrane and regulates rates of constitutive endocytosis

    Overexpression of phosphatidylinositol phosphate 5-kinase (PIP5KI) isoforms α, β, or γ in CV-1 cells increased phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2) levels by 35, 180, and 0%, respectively. Endocytosis of transferrin receptors, association of AP-2 proteins with membranes, and the number of clathrin-coated pits at the plasma membrane increased when PIP2 increased. When expression of PIP5KIβ was inhibited with small interference RNA in HeLa cells, expression of PIP5KIα was also reduced slightly, but PIP5KIγ expression was increased. PIP2 levels and internalization of transferrin receptors dropped 50% in these cells; thus, PIP5KIγ could not compensate for loss of PIP5KIβ. When expression of PIP5KIα was reduced, expression of both PIP5KIβ and PIP5KIγ increased and PIP2 levels did not change. A similar increase of PIP5KIα and PIP5KIβ occurred when PIP5KIγ was inhibited. These results indicate that constitutive endocytosis in CV-1 and HeLa cells requires (and may be regulated by) PIP2 produced primarily by PIP5KIβ
