Sentence Ambiguities : Thoughts on English Teaching

When we are sending or receiving information, it may be best to be as clear as possible. But, because of other functions of language and because of the importance of the relationship factors as well as the content, even our information is not always as clear and precise as we might wish it to be. The fact is that there are numerous sentences which are perfectly grammatical but ambiguous and, oftentimes, meaningless. The problem exists in the attempt at extracting a sentence out of context-dependent text of discourse. Discourse on both intrinsic and extrinsic circumstances should be considered in the EFL classroom. Homosexuals and Their Place in Multiculturalism

Multlculturalism has been prevailing in many developed countries in the world and its concept has been gaining more strength and effect particularly in American society. One of the characteristics of multiculturalism is that it grants equal value to the viewpoints of formerly ignored minority groups such as Blacks, Native Americans, women, homosexuals, and the handicapped.　The existence of each ethnic group in America stands out against the background of the global trend, leaving in consequence other minority groups being downplayed. The situation of American homosexuals in multiculturalism in particular appears to be distinctive and differential among them. Its reason can be found in the outset of American history, value system, laws and Christianity.

Clinical application of sialic acid (II) Sialic acid contents in cerebro-spinal fluid of patients suffering from the disease of the central nervous system

It is well known that human serum contains some sialic acid and its contents increase markedly in the blood serum of the patients bearing malignant tumors. Recently YAMAKAWA2, BHOM3, SAITO4 and YUI5 observed the sialic acid contents in the blood sera from the patients of various diseases and clarified that its contents increase not only in the sera from the cases bearing malignant tumors but also in those of rheumatic or tuberculous diseases. BOHM6 et al. measured the sialic acid contents in the cerebrospinal fluid of several diseases and ascertained that its contents increase in the cerebrospinal fuid from the cases of inflammatory diseases. In connection with these works we have observed the sialic acid contents in the cerebrospinal fluid of the patients suffering from the diseases of central nervous system, prior to the surgical operation, and revealed the markedly increased contents in the sialic acid in the patients bearing tumors of the nervous system. In this paper the data are reported in detail.</p

Contents of the Digital Natural History Museum of Hiroshima University, especially in the field of biology

広島大学デジタル自然史博物館は，広島大学の開学以来長年にわたって蓄積された教育・研究に関する知的資産を外部に公開し，生涯学習や学校教育のために活用することを目的として設置されている。デジタル自然史博物館には生物学や地学とそれに関係する資料が含まれる。特徴のあるコンテンツとしてはコケ植物や世界遺産宮島に関するものがあげられる。コンテンツの大部分は日本語であり，アクセス数は2015年度以降増加傾向にある。今後，現在進めているMediaWiki を使ったシステムへの移行を進めるとともに，コンテンツの充実やICT を使った学習への対応，運用母体の強化などを通じて，教育・研究のためだけでなく地域貢献のためのリソースとして発展させる計画である。The Digital Natural History Museum of Hiroshima University is a cluster of web sites for dissemination and practical use of educational and research resources for lifelong learning as well as school education in collaboration with laboratories and centers of Hiroshima University, Japan. The museum site includes contents on biological, environmental and earth sciences, mainly in Japanese with some English, especially bryophytes and the world heritage listed Itsukushima (Miyajima) Island, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. Online site access has increased since 2015. The museum site is now transferring the html based system to the MediaWiki system which is a free and open-source wiki software. For regional studies we plan to expand significantly the content of available resources to enable greater use and ease of access through information and communication technology (ICT)

川崎医療短期大学における語彙力に関する調査

本稿は,川崎医療短期大学の在学生の語彙力に関する調査結果を報告することを目的とする.2007年度入学生の追跡調査結果では,中学生レベルの語彙力のまま卒業を迎える学生がいることが明らかになった.さらに,入学から1年後は語彙力が伸びるが,2年次以降は語彙力が伸びる学生と伸びない学生の差が顕著であることが明らかになった.今後の課題として,語彙力を継続的に高めていくための方策を検討することが挙げられる
