Thermoelectric power quantum oscillations in the ferromagnet UGe2_2

We present thermoelectric power and resistivity measurements in the ferromagnet UGe2_2 as a function of temperature and magnetic field. At low temperature, huge quantum oscillations are observed in the thermoelectric power as a function of the magnetic field applied along the aa axis. The frequencies of the extreme orbits are determined and an analysis of the cyclotron masses is performed following different theoretical approaches for quantum oscillations detected in the thermoelectric power. They are compared to those obtained by Shubnikov-de Haas experiments on the same crystal and previous de Haas-van Alphen experiments. The agreement of the different probes confirms thermoelectric power as an excellent probe to extract simultaneously both microscopic and macroscopic information on the Fermi-surface properties. Band-structure calculations of UGe2_2 in the ferromagnetic state are compared to the experiment.Comment: 10 figures, 12 pages, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

Clustering in stable and unstable nuclei in pp-shell and sdsd-shell regions

According to microscopic calculations with antisymmetrized molecular dynamics, we studied cluster features in stable and unstable nuclei. A variety of structure was found in stable and unstable nuclei in the pp-shell and sdsd-shell regions. The structure of excited states of 12^{12}Be was investigated, while in sdsd-shell nuclei we focused on molecular states and deformed states. The deformed states in 28^{28}Si and 40^{40}Ca were discussed in connection with the high-lying molecular states. Appealing molecular states in 36^{36}Ar and 24^{24}Mg were suggested. The results signified that both clustering of nucleons and mean-field formation are essential features in sdsd-shell nuclei as well as pp-shell nuclei.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figs, proceedings of the 8th International conference on Clustering Aspects of Nuclear Structure and Dynamics, Nov. 2003, Nara, Japan, to be published in Nucl.Phys.

Mixed Representation RPA Calculation for Octupole Excitations on Superdeformed Sates in the 40Ca and Neutron-Rich Sulfur Regions

By means of the mixed representation RPA based on the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock mean field, we investigate low-frequency octupole excitations built on the superdeformed (SD) states in the N=Z nuclei around 40Ca and the neutron-rich Sulfur isotopes. The RPA calculation is carried out fully self-consistently on the three-dimensional Cartesian mesh in a box, and yields a number of low-frequency octupole vibrations built on the SD states in 32S, 36Ar, 40Ca and 44Ti. In particular, a strongly collective K^\pi=1^- octupole vibration is suggested to appear on top of the SD state in 40Ca. For 48,50S close to the neutron drip line, we find that the low-lying state created by the excitation of a single neutron from a loosely bound low Omega level to a high Omega resonance level acquires an extremely strong octupole transition strength due to the spatially very extended structure of the particle-hole wave functions.Comment: 22 pages, 7 figure

Hybridization between the conduction band and 3d orbitals in the oxide-based diluted magnetic semiconductor In2x_{2-x}Vx_xO3_3

The electronic structure of In2x_{2-x}Vx_xO3_3 (x=0.08x=0.08) has been investigated using photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The V 2p2p core-level PES and XAS spectra revealed trivalent electronic state of the V ion, consistent with the substitution of the V ion for the In site. The V 3d partial density of states obtained by the resonant PES technique showed a sharp peak above the O 2p2p band. While the O 1s1s XAS spectrum of In2x_{2-x}Vx_xO3_3 was similar to that of In2_2O3_3, there were differences in the In 3p3p and 3d XAS spectra between V-doped and pure In2_2O3_3. The observations give clear evidence for hybridization between the In conduction band and the V 3d orbitals in In2x_{2-x}Vx_xO3_3.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
