Effects of accidental microconstriction on the quantized conductance in long wires
We have investigated the conductance of long quantum wires formed in
GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures. Using realistic fluctuation potentials from donor
layers we have simulated numerically the conductance of four different kinds of
wires. While ideal wires show perfect quantization, potential fluctuations from
random donors may give rise to strong conductance oscillations and degradation
of the quantization plateaux. Statistically there is always the possibility of
having large fluctuations in a sample that may effectively act as a
microconstriction. We therefore introduce microconstrictions in the wires by
occasional clustering of donors. These microconstrictions are found to restore
the quantized plateaux. A similar effect is found for accidental lithographic
inaccuracies.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, paper for NANO2002 symposium, will appear in SPIE

p-wave superfluidity in mixtures of ultracold Fermi and spinor Bose gases
We reveal that the p-wave superfluid can be realized in a mixture of
fermionic and F=1 bosonic gases. We derive a general set of the gap equations
for gaps in the s- and p-channels. It is found that the spin-spin bose-fermi
interactions favor the p-wave pairing and naturally suppress the pairing in the
s-channel. The gap equations for the polar phase of p-wave superfluid fermions
are numerically solved. It is shown that a pure p-wave superfluid can be
observed in a well-controlled environment of atomic physics.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure
Nonlocal surface dipoles and vortices
We predict the existence and address the stability of two-dimensional surface
solitons featuring topologically complex shapes, including dipoles, vortices,
and bound states of vortex solitons, at the interface of nonlocal thermal
media. Unlike their counterparts in bulk media, surface dipoles are found to be
stable in the entire existence domain. Surface vortices are found to exhibit
strongly asymmetric intensity and phase distributions, and are shown to be
stable, too. Bound states of surface vortex solitons belong to a novel class of
surface solitons having no counterparts in bulk media. Such states are found to
be stable provided that their energy flow does not exceed an upper threshold.
Our findings constitute the first known example of topologically complex
solitons located at nonlocal two-dimensional interfaces.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Stable vortex structures in colliding self-gravitating Bose-Einstein condensates
A key feature of ultra-light dark matter composed by bosons is the formation
of superfluid Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) structures on galactic scales. We
study collisions of BEC solitonic and vortex structures in the framework of the
Gross-Pitaevskii-Poisson model. It is found that the superfluid nature of
bosonic dark matter leads to the formation of quantized vortex lines and vortex
rings in interference patterns formed during collisions. Calculating the
gravitational wave luminosity, we demonstrated that quantum interference
patterns affect notably the gravitational wave radiation.
We reveal that superfluid self-gravitating BECs can form stable localized
vortex structures which remain robust even after a head-on collision.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure
Under the anisotropy of boundary conditions, a high-gap III-V semiconductor indicates a behavior of pyroelectric crystal (in spite of it is a piezoelectric only). Partial limitation of strain in the [111]-plate of this crystal provides its substantial electric response to time-variation of temperature dT(t) or pressure dp(t). Herewith the voltage sensitivity of semi-insulating GaAlAs or GaN sensor is close to one of the PZT ceramics. However, PZT cell-transducer used as sensor device needs a hybrid integration with semiconductor amplifier. Unlike of this, if sensor device is based on the III-V crystal, transducer and amplifier are various parts of one crystal chip.
Stable multiple-charged localized optical vortices in cubic-quintic nonlinear media
The stability of two-dimensional bright vortex solitons in a media with
focusing cubic and defocusing quintic nonlinearities is investigated
analytically and numerically. It is proved that above some critical beam powers
not only one- and two-charged but also multiple-charged stable vortex solitons
do exist. A vortex soliton occurs robust with respect to symmetry-breaking
modulational instability in the self-defocusing regime provided that its radial
profile becomes flattened, so that a self-trapped wave beam gets a pronounced
surface. It is demonstrated that the dynamics of a slightly perturbed stable
vortex soliton resembles an oscillation of a liquid stream having a surface
tension. Using the idea of sustaining effective surface tension for spatial
vortex soliton in a media with competing nonlinearities the explanation of a
suppression of the modulational instability is proposed.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Submitted to Journal of Optics A. The proceedings
